This is not political and please leave the post that way. This is just an FYI for any out of state hunters.
ODNR passed a doe only muzzle loader season in October for the 12th and 13th. If you planned to be bow hunting here that weekend or there abouts, you might like to change your plans. I just wanted to get the info out there so no one has their hunt ruined.
God bless,
Charlie
Thanks for the info. I will definitely avoid bowhunting Ohio that weekend.
This is just great, thanks odnr for screwing up the early season hunting. Wonder how many bucks are going to be killed that weekend and called in later in the week!
I sometimes hear single rifle shots where I bow hunt in Ohio. I know the difference between the sound of a shot gun and a high power rifle. it aint squirrl hunters..maybe coyote hunters?.. It got worse after the call in deer check..
The odnr doesn't appear to listen to anyone but farm bureau and license sales. I've not heard anyone wanting it and everyone disliking it. The rules this year appear to be a last minute thing. They should read readers comments and polls in the Ohio Outdoor News publication. These are people who are in the woods year after year.

I have no problem with the new season. People are getting worked up over nothing. I like the fact that they have eliminated the extra 2 day anydeer season in December. Most hunters are honest and are not going to poach a buck.
"The odnr doesn't appear to listen to anyone but farm bureau and license sales."
You forgot about the insurance companies, they probably have more influence than any...
"Most hunters are honest and are not going to poach a buck."
You're kidding right.... "Most" maybe, but how many good bucks are going to get whacked by these smokepolers when a big bucks walks out in front of them with a rifle in their hands when they are legal to be in the woods... Lotz are not going to resist. If your're from Canton, surely you oughta know what the blaze orange weekend army is like... We're not talkn about dedicated bowhunters here, and they the ones to suffer after watching and patterning bucks through the summer only to have the survivors go nocturnal in early October...
This was definitely not something new or last minute.
This was in the proposal before the public meetings. (october ML hunt) I disagree with the early ML hunt, but found myself conceding if they were going to eliminate the 2nd gun season.
In the end,, they did not eliminate the 2nd gun season in Dec. They simply moved it in a last minute decision due to pressure from Ohio congress. It is now in January tacked on to the normal late ML season. I had many conversations with Mike Tonkavich regarding this issue. I assure you, this decision was not made based on opinions from biologists or hunters. This is a money grab of the political nature.
Now, archers do not have any months to hunt in Ohio that is not interrupted by a gun season. ( I guess we do have 3 days in September and 3 days in February)

Reading comprehension challenged are we???
While I agree with the notion to leave politics out of it, it simply is not possible regarding this issue if the facts are being stated.
Yeah this early ML season and restructure of firearms season is not new and been in the works for a nearly a year now and widely publicized, but regardless of sportsmen's opinions, I've rarely if ever seen them change regulations due to public outcry once regs are submitted to the wildlife counsel.
Just when I think DOW decisions can't get any worst, it does...
We were lucky a few years ago when the OBA helped get days extended at the end of the bowseason to makeup days we lost to firearms during bowseason...
Yes, i agree Zbone..
It is a great time for bowhunters to support the OBA if not doing so already.

Read the post again. I knew if it went to a political discussion, it would be moved. I want it out on Pow Wow to help guys out.
MY INTENT IS TO HELP HARD WORKING, BLUE COLLAR HUNTERS THAT ARE SCHEDULING BOW HUNTS IN OHIO. I WOULD LIKE TO HELP THEM AVOID WASTING THEIR MONEY ON THAT WEEKEND.
My reading comprehension is just fine. The "this" I was referring to is the post, not the overall topic. I know the issue is/can be political, but this post is not meant for that. It is just an FYI so hard working guys don't waste their money. I hate to see someone end up on the short end of the stick.
God bless,
Charlie
*There is a thread on the politics of this issue over in the correct forum.
Squirrel season starts sept 1 in Ohio and is very popular in many areas. Most deer here start hearing guns and seeing hunters three weeks before the archery opener.
It's true that unless you have controlled private land to hunt you may want to avoid a gun weekend to archery hunt although I took a nice buck on a youth gun weekend with no shortage of shooting going on around me.

. They did not approve the 2 extra days in January.
Not sure about all the politics, but I like to hunt Ohio whether with both bow or ML. It won't screw up my weekend - I'll be there.

Definitely.
I will probably try to bowhunt that weekend. I don't like the season and don't believe it is necessary. But I guess I can get the orange out for two days.
Perhaps Hunters want to bring orange just in case???

You will definately need orange. Just like are youth season in november bowhunters still have to wear blaze orange.
It's an unfortunate situation that is becoming common practice all over the country, from local to state to federal politics. The masses paying the bills are ignored by the politicians but they are all ears to the special interest lobbyists.
The crossbow and in-line muzzleloader (really cross-gun and muzzle-loaded rifle) manufacturers have stopped at nothing to win over politicians and silence the hunters who pay the bills.
I've been involved with a lot of organizations over the years and spent a lot of my own free time fighting this stuff. I'm not saying you shouldn't join the good organizations and try to fight, I'm just saying be prepared for an uphill battle and a lot of frustration. The only organization I have ever been a part of that wins for sportsmen regularly is the NRA. And only because they have a lot more money than the people they take on.
It's a shame, it's not right but that's the way it is today. The only way I've found to insulate myself from all of these season changes and hunter intrusions is to own my own land and control what goes on there. I know not everyone has the means to do so but I quit buying $40,000 pick up trucks every 3 years and put that money towards some land. Best move I ever made and my 10 year old used Suburban still gets me anywhere I want to go.

Charlie I apologize for my post.
You are a good man for trying to look out for and prepare others for future hunts.

Are you positive? I dont remember late ML season being 4 days.
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/News/NewsReleaseArchives/tabid/19075/EntryId/3247/2013-14-Ohio-Hunting-and-Trapping-Seasons.aspx
I read something about them allowing gunners the first 2 days of late ML. Maybe they conceded and just made the late ML season 2 days longer
Yeah, ML season was extended from 3 to 4 days a couple years or so ago, when they moved it from late December back into January I believe... I'll look it up when a chance.
It was never called/considered "Late" ML season, only "Statewide" ML season. The "Early" ML season was only for a chosen few of the special wildlife areas in October.
BTW - The thread has not been moved.... It's pretty much impossible to bring up a thread about drastic changes in deer season regulations (especially for bowhunters) and not be open for discussion....

x10000000000
Went back 10 years, "Statewide" Muzzleloader season has been four days since at least 2003, and changed from late December 2008 to January in 2010... Dec 27 - 30, 2008, then the next season was Jan 9 - 12, 2010.
Four months of on and off legal firearms season statewide in a densely populated state, it's tuff to find a mature buck not nocturnal that time of year. Every time they calm down - Bang, someone is firing lead at them again...

Deer archery: Sept. 28, 2013-Feb. 2, 2014;
Antlerless deer muzzleloader: Oct. 12-13, 2013;
Youth deer: Nov. 23-24, 2013;
Deer gun: Dec. 2-8, 2013; and
Deer muzzleloader: Jan. 4-7, 2014.
Hunters may harvest only one buck in Ohio, regardless of the method of take or location. The hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes past sunset for all deer seasons. Antlerless permits are valid until Dec. 1, the Sunday before deer-gun season.
"
A few guys wandering the woods with a .22 or the occasional shotgun is WAY different than 500 guys hitting the same area all at one time with muzzleloaders. Totally different impact on the deer.
*Again, I'm just trying to save some guys money. They likely wouldn't want to spend money trying to bowhunt a buck during doe only muzzleloader season! This post is mostly just a FYI.
I've been through all these kinds of season changes in Kentucky and there is nothing to fear except fear itself, unless OH people are less
Before I write the following I want to grant Buckeye hunter his due. I think he is truly just giving a heads up to fellows who might want to select that weekend for their bow hunting. If you don't want to wear orange and if that weekend is doe-only for every one in the deer woods, then I would pick another weekend too.
But....
I've been through all kinds of these deer hunting seasons in Kentucky: Late Dec. MZZL., Oct. MZL, Youth Rifle in Oct., expanded rifle season days, Free Youth Deer Days in Dec., crossbow expansion, .... none of these has caused a decline in the quality of my bowhunting. There is little to fear except fear itself unties OH hunters are less honorable than average ... I know several OH hunters and they are cream of the crop.
There is one thing to be concerned about.... the more we bowhunters come across as unreasonable and possessive the more harm we do the bowhunting culture. In the early days of setting bowseasons we were our own best friends, these days we seem to be our worst enemies.
I heard the change was proposed by "Rogue" IRS agents in Cinci?
Just because the agency doesn't abide a person's suggestion doesn't mean they don't listen. There are many voices speaking. In the end a position will be taken that appears to "listen" to some and "ignore" others.
If you had an issue with it they held meetings I'm Columbus which were open to the public.... It is what it is, if you're a good hunter you'll adapt and overcome, yeah it stinks but it's all something we have to deal with, FYI I spend more time in southeast Ohio than I do my home state
