Title: Bow-camo???
Post by: 3Feathers on May 28, 2013, 04:52:00 PM
For you ground-pounders anybody camo their bow when hunting from a natural blind or using a ghillie? Some finishes are shiny. Was wondering if that shine would affect game.If so what do you use to camo the limbs?

I use snake skins because that is about as camo as you can get if they dont have a shiny finish. In the old days we used those camo sleaves on our bows and i thought they always worked well.Been thinking about sewing some up for my vintage bows that i dont want to alter. When i used to use them i never noticed any affect on my bow performance.

Years ago I'd camo my bows. Painted them with flat colors. For quite some time I've been dulling the shine with steel wool or very fine sand paper. Seems to work just fine.

Buy a black creek bow. It has the nicest matte finish I have seen on a custom bow - no shine.

I never really worried about it... I've killed deer.

Personaly, I think scent will spook deer before shine ever does.

Actualy, I don't wear any camo either.....

I like glossy bows, so when hunting I'll use camo limb covers from 3 Rivers.

A quick spray with satin poly willcut the shine.
Sitting still and using the wind in your favor is your best camo.

Steve Turay finished this green glass absolutely flat for me. I thought I might spray a bit of tan or black on it, but it blends with vegetation fine as is.

Stalker Stickbows are finished in a textured epoxy and do not reflect any light. Mine also has quarter sawn actionwood laminations that make for camo!

Back in the early days of modern archery some used to smudge chalk on the limbs .

I have used camo paint, tape, and fabric sleeves as well as shooting glossy finish. I have found that lack of movement is the most significant factor in being unseen.

I had my Fedora finished in Charcoal. Bamboo limbs stained to match riser. My Groves, I just spray painted the limbs.

You can rub some wax on the limbs during hunting season to cut the gloss than in the off season buff it off.

i make my own woodland camo bowsocks like in the old days style and i also use and now on all my bows the alaska bowhunting supply bow limb covers camo and spandex so its tight i just cut them to length and sew thw cut end so its not in the string grove and also protects the bow from scratches trees etc

I saw a bow that had crayon(that's right ask you 3 year for some crayons!) rubbed on it to cut down on the glare.... it actually looked pretty good and it isn't permanent.

Where ya at Rodney Martin!

Use black spray on Plasti-Dip. Spray a LIGHT coat on it. If that's enough for you, stop there. If not, spray some more. When you're through just take your thumb and start rubbing it off.

I shoot a Zipper Nitro longbow....limbs arent wide like lots of recurves....the carbon and matte finish on the limb faces is a nice flat finish.   These characteristics make for a very low visibility limb....no need to be "camo" covered.   As someone else stated,  shine and movement are your 2 tells.... stay flat/matte and stay still,  til' they aren't looking....then let em' have it

I'm with POWduck - Plasti-Dip spray.  I saw him post that a couple years back and I use it on my Jack Howard Gamemaster Jets - those bows have a piano-shiny finish and white belly limbs to boot - works like a champ, and comes off easy by hand, but doesn't get rubbed off in the brush.

I went with the camo cloth tape this past year on the back of my osage.  It has held up well this year.

I the past I went to the local florist and bought floral spray paint, started with a coat of flat black, then accented with a light green or grey. When you wanted to remove it, used Lacquer Thinner and wiped it off. then polished the bow with a good furniture polish.

Thanks, Ryan. I can't claim personal origin for this one though. My cousin ArkyBob would the be the originator for that.

But it does work really well though.

On bows finished with a polyurethane finish, you can just smear the back with the same grease makeup some hunters use on their face. It will clean back off with a little alcohol and pledge.

I use string wax on the limbs. Don't rub it in, just glob it on and smear it around with your thumb. It works great and adds a little protection to the limbs.

After the season I buff it in with a rag.

I tend to spray mine.  No fancy patterns, generally a lighter green (dull camo paint) background, then blotches of darker going across, not just lines, but big blotches.  I have had to look for my bow after laying it in the grass or against a tree.

Remember, it will shine and glare only if light is bouncing off of it.  Watch the sun, you don't really want it in your face anyway.
