anybody use these? I have been drooling over the classic sportsman wool/canvas packs but $270 is kinda outa my range for a backpack.....
Saw many canvas listed backpacks on the big auction site and got to thinking.
these are matural colors, tough (some) canvas, and many just the size I need to carry a few extras into the woods and hang on the limb behind me until its time to leave.
pics are always a plus (who doesn't like pics with stories lol)
thanks all.
Check out Duluth pack, I have a room in my basement with a bunch of them.
You want to let one of those go pavan? Haha. Actually I have looked at duluth quite a bit. Classic sportsman is a duluth pack, just with plaid wool on it. The plaid is what catches my eye, canvas for the durability.
Been searching the auction sure here and there, duluths are all over that place.
These aren't cheap but... Altadena Works (http://www.altadenaworks.com)

Always thought canvas backpacks were cool, and classie but never ran across one I could afford.
I had one of those in the 1970s when I was a Boy Scout. They look neat but I would hate to pack very much weight in one.
I have two boy scout canvas packs. If you search the net, look for the #574. Love those things and remember trying to stuff all my camping gear in there. You can find most under $40.
There was a BEAUTY on our own TG classifieds in the past two weeks. . . had me drooling.

My mom had a canvas pack with red wool added to the flap made for my dad as a wedding present in 1948. It is the ONLY pack my dad has used for hunting since that time. My dad has always been a rifle hunter and that pack has been in on more elk kills than I can even count.
It shows it's age but is still going strong.
I have a green military pack, it's got 2 big pockets inside. I don't even remember where I got it I've had it so long. I used it all the time for years when I was still hunting from trees. It carried everything for setting up except for the stands themselves. I started using it last deer season as my main day pack, I can't see it ever wearing out. As a bonus, it looks cool with my plaid wool hunting shirts, lol.
Those Classic Bowmen packs look very nice, but I could get a few dozen wood shafts for the price.
I have this one from Frost River (linke below).. It's fantastic in all respects. I like Frost River products for the money over Duluth Packs, but to each his own. You can get one of these by ordering directly through Tenbrook here on this site. He's a sponsor and offers a discount over the advertised retail price. He's got a post in the Sponsor's Classifieds.

The one part with mixing wool and canvas that may be a problem. Canvas packs like Duluth and Frost River Packs were born, bred and designed to be thrown in canoes and get a good soaking in the process, the wool part will not be able to dry as fast as the canvas part when it gets soaked. The other thing is that when one gets a collection of canvas packs, one really should take them on an annual Boundary Waters canoe trip.
I have both Duluth and Filson canvas packs. Great quality, worth the money.
Check out Adler Stream Canvas. They make traditional canvas packs like Duluth and Frost River but at about half the price.
