After a lot of discussion's with members of the 2013 Hill Gang Hog Hunt, It's been decided the 2014 Hill Gang Hog Hunt will return to Southern Georgia on January 24, 25, and 26.
Same rules apply, Hill style longbows only.
I hope to see you there, Darren
If you go, not only will you have a great time but you will leave with a lifetime of memories and new friends.
Come down and hunt with us, and meet the Hill Gang:

Primitive camping (no restrooms) on Ocmulgee WMA on the tract near the check station, unless the river floods. If it does we will camp across the river on Oaky Woods because there is more high ground there. We will not know till the hunt is close, but they are so close together it won't be a problem.
Ocmulgee WMA is 17,370 acres, close by is Oaky Woods WMA 13,240 acres. Ocmulgee check station is located at 32 27.144N 83 28.182 W
Maps of Ocmulgee and Oaky woods are visible here:
http://georgiawildlife.com/maps/hunting/region4
The Ocmulgee River splits the two WMAs in places. Depends on River stage as far as float hunting goes. If you wanted to hunt Oaky woods you could canoe straight across the River to save a 30 mile drive.
Recommend getting licenses on line beforehand WMA license $73.00
3 Day non-resident hunting license $20.00
In January it will be also small game season, so you guys bring your Flu-Flu's. RC said there's lots of squirrels.
I would expect it to be in the 20s at night and highs in the 50s.
It would be mostly spot and stalk for hogs and small game, unless you bring a treestand.
Bring a Thermacell and good walking shoes as well as a pair of rubber boots. Snakes are active anytime of year here on sunny days above 50 degrees or so. Just be careful and watch where you step and you will be fine.
Those GA swamps can get you turned around. It would be a good idea to have a GPS and/or compass.
A map for those in other states who might want to carry a concealed firearm in GA: http://www.georgiapacking.org/gflr.php
You can get wood from the WMA as long as its already down. Woodstoves are cool. No generators after dark. Camping only in designated areas. No ATVs or driving on walk- in roads for any reason.
You quarter and pack out. This is not a managed hunt. After deer season when small game is in you pretty much have the run of the place.
There is a Lake there that is man made and 88 acres that 10 lb bass are caught and released regularly. Not to mention Bream and cats. So if you get tired of walking....you can fish.
Highway 96 east out of Bonaire. Oaky Woods is on the west side of the river and Oakmulgee is on the east side. HWY 96 runs across the northern end of the WMA's.
Probably the closest town to Ocmulgee is Hawkinsville. There is a nearby Country store for ice, sodas and stuff. It is also a meat processer and sells smoked meat.
In really cold temps I never see pork till after 10:00 then all day is good. I usually sleep in and hunt from 11 till dark on very cold days.
I've not spent a lot of time on Oaky Woods but have seen pigs every time I've been there but once. The locals I know say it has more hogs but is a bit tougher because it has more hills and thick cover. For a slow-hunting, patient hunter this could be good.
For you Topo map folks, I believe Ocmulgee is on the USGS Maps named Westlake GA (product #248204), and Tarversville, GA (248273). Oaky Wood (248165) and (248189)
No hunter orange is required. Deer season is over then.
I'll be there again, Lord willing!
IN!
Oh boy!
I'm excited to say, "I'M IN!!!"
I got VACATION scheduled this time..RC
I plan on being there unless work sends me out of town again.
I'll ask for time off at work again. ;)
Since I'm in control of the vacation book at work....it's a shoe-in for sure!!!!
I always take a week in January for a day at a time for hunting so Lord willing I will try to make this one. Would love to hunt with some of you folks!!
I'm going to try and make this.
I am considering it this year but need to see when we are having the PBS Member Hunt in Georgia...this year was in February slightly before your hunt. Hopefully can do both... :) :)
Count me in, after last yr. theres no way im missing out on this! Even the wet weather couldnt put a damper on the great time and great friends that were made on last yrs. hunt.
See ya'll soon. Lord willing
I'm definitely interested!
At the last get together I laughed harder around the campfire than I have in years! Might have another Georgia pig hunting adventure in me.
I hope I can play this year. I live just up the road a piece.
Although primitive campground, any restriction on pulling in a 18' foot trailer to set up as base camp?

Nope.....you can camp beside me ;)

You needed to be there! The campfire stories were so funny. Welcome to America Officer!!! :biglaugh: :jumper: You had to be there.
       I love this country! Inside joke.
When we got to the hunt last year, none of us had face to face contact before so there was an introduction period the first day. By Sunday, we knew our names, shared a few beers, and lots of stories. It was great, not to mention that Bob Burton brought some of Howard Hill's personal bows for us to drool over.
Count me in
Nomad88 was there, glad you're coming back.
The cool thing about going back to S. Georgia is that we know the layout of the WMA better this time.

OK! I give! I'm in!
Only hope that I can add to the merriment! :biglaugh:
Bob
Moleman is funnier then Jeff Foxworthy, Next time Moleman needs to break out the banjo.
I say we do it again. It was a great time, and no one let the weather stop our fun or hunting. I really want to go so I can taste some more of Georges peach cobbler......... awesome!
Well I was hoping for something a little closer to home up here in the frozen north but 1200 miles is a small trip for times as good as this - I'm a DEFINATE!
Chris and Jeff - you guys better make it too... Wouldn't be the same without my Texas brothers!
Moleman - we gotta remember to bring enough beer to keep each other going! Lol
... And as a visitor to America I can only hope for the warm greeting that Darren's colleagues so generously dispense to foreigners......
If the weather is half as good as it was this year, it will be an awesome reunion.I'm willing to bet there will be some dead pigs involved this time around. That is, if the river isn't too flooded. The camp time with my brothers is worth the trip. Hog hunting is just icing on the cake! If I can get the time to go, I'll be there!
The good Lord willing.
God bless,Mudd
If sticksnstones has room I may be jumping in with him. I would love to meet all of you!

Nick Viau was talking about carpooling with Thom too.

lol, I didn't know your TG handle. Hope to see you there.
I talked to Thom on Thursday, He's out of town for the weekend hog hunting. Can't wait to hear his story.
First time I saw the pic of the '13 Motely Cru!
Looking forward to adding my mug to the 2014 group pic!!

Haha no problem man. Yep, Thom's a friend of mine. He's hog crazy now. I'm really hoping to make it. I've never been hog hunting before.
I'm in for sure! I have to redeem myself in the cobbler competition :campfire:
Only thing is I will definitely have to talk with my bowyer about making me another Echo in 46lbs max. Last trip I shot my 58lbs to the point of ripping my shoulder to shreds. I am finally getting over it now thank the Lord
Hey Todd, I'm glad your in. Can't wait to try that cobbler.
Todd
long time no hear....
don't be a stranger...
All i have to say is cobbler rocks!!
Hey Todd (herndondt). If you want to ride down, you are more than welcome! I'm hopefully gonna be towing a trailer (my idea of "primitive camping" )!
BC
I'll have to work on building a hog setup now.
I like a 2 blade head. 3 to 1. One of the shortest trails I had was with the tuffhead. Now they have a 190 grain which I will be giving a try. Tapered wood shafts, 10 grains per pound, good sharp, 3 to 1 BH, Yeah buddy!

This "little boar" was shot with a woodsman elite. He did not go but about 80 yards. Arrow was 12 grains per pound. Cedar arrow with woody weight.

Great pics! Like that baby pig target :goldtooth: !!
Last years hunt was a blast, even with the weather being WET, WET and WET! The best people on this earth carry stickbows in the hands. :)

That is becoming more and more apparent every year I do this.
Is this the same as the other hill gang hunt thread? Just wondering I would like to try to make one
January 2014 hunt in Georgia.
Why did I have it in my mind that it was scheduled for 3 days in Feb of 2014?
Please verify the date(s) for me.
Thank you!
God bless,Mudd
Jan 24, 25, 26 2014. Look at the first post on this thread for info.
Thats seems to be pretty cheap out of state tags. Fuel will be the most expensive part. If my scheduel will allow I will be there. This would be my first hunt to actually come through with other tradgangers.
beaver#1- try to carpool with someone, and share the expense. Last year several guys carpooled to make the trip.
Anyone coming from the north east tax region. Or along the way?
Beaver #1,
Talked with ChrisM, we need to get a stump shooting expedition together in the future to talk shop. ;)
I have no Idea if I'll be able to make it this year or not. Sure hope to because my license will still be good till feb.2nd.Most likely will be working.
Knawbone you better make it!!!
Sound good Jeff give me a call anytime.
What Chris said. :-)
Ross,
Check your PM's.

Ha ha! There is room in my Prius for both Limblover and Nick :smileystooges:
I can't wait to meet up with you folks again and get another chance to hunt pigs down there!
I got my HHA Crocodile last Thursday and put an arrow in a pig on Saturday with it. 68" 73@28 if anyone wants to shoot it. I intend to bring it, my Echo, and maybe a NM if its done in time.
Is it time to go yet???
Thom
I've been talking to some of the guys that went to last years Hill Gang Hog Hunt, several of them are planning to hunt more then the planned 3 days. It doesn't cost much more for an annual hunting license.
Darren, if time permits im definitely gonna try to stay a couple extra days, every extra hr hunting just ups your chances at bringing home the bacon.
With better weather, theres definitely gonna be some picking and grinning round the fire this yr, so be prepared, as Ive got some great new material! Its amazing what kind of songs and lyrics some half crocked bluegrass pickers can come up with! and weve been busy! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Paul
Well it looks like I'm going then fellas. So far anyway. Now how do you hunt pigs?? lol
Stalk quietly and carry a straight limb longbow.
I'm in, along with Ken (threeunder). Let us know more details when available!
This will be fun!
Bob I may want to ride down with you or we can at least meet up somewhere down the road. I will be in a camper this year. Last year broke me from tent camping for sure. How many days are you looking at staying? Oh I need to get up with you maybe before the STAR shoot if that's cool. I haven't asked Bud yet but I'm sure he may want to carpool too.
Hey Paul, I'm going to try and make it for at least 5 days, will know more in Oct. when I submit my annual leave.
Gonna stay longer this year too. Not sure how the carpooling will work but as it gets closer I'll know more. Already put in and am approved for vacation.
I'm planning to be there. I've already put in for the time off.
I'm planning to bring a popup camper. So far, its just me in it if anyone's looking for a bed. It ain't fancy, but, it'll do.
TTT
Thanks for the TTT. Darren had called me about this, but I never looked for the thread. Last time was awesome, and since my WMA license is still good, might as well try to kill something with it.
Put me down, although I still have to get the boss's permission, and archery is on her nerves at the moment....
Bump this up! We need to start talking about this a little more. Who else is excited about this hunt?
Looking forward to this hunt!!
Looking forward to it myself! Got me a fresh supply of burlap bags that im gonna transform into a hog target. Once stitched and stuffed im gonna shoot the dickens out of it in prep. for the hunt.
Think ill fashion about a 300 pounder, i like to set my goals high. :biglaugh:
I'm really trying to make this hunt guys. I figure even if we don't kill, we'll still eat some good food and share some laughs. That alone will be worth the price of admission.
Moleman, I like 300#ers, they are not nearly as easy to miss as the little ones scurrying all around. :biglaugh:
I'm going just to drink beer at moleman's fire..... That's a GOOD time!
Even if we miss the pork chops on the hoof, im with Roscoe, theres always pork chops in a can!
Moleman drinks beer by the fire??? I'm liking this.
If y'all think y'all can handle Cajun cooking ill promise some great food.
Looking forward to it awbowman! I love Cajun food.
With good weather, im gonna break out my old Martin guitar and well have a little music as well, I play and sing waaaay better than I shoot.
Seems that a gathering like this draws in the best of folks where great times and memories are made, and thats what its all about.
That's a fact Paul. Can't beat good people and a fire.
So do I HAVE to have a Hill bow to come to this?? Will an English longbow suffice? Reason I ask is I just sold that forward Miller Cheetah that I had specifically bought thinking o this hunt. I have a line on a nice Shelton but I already have my yew ELB and if I could get away without buying another bow... :) I mean the ELB is like the Hill bow great granddaddy right?? LOL
I was talking to Jesus yesterday, we're geared up and ready to go to. I had an awesome time last year meeting everyone, made some great new friendships.
Really looking forward to this hunt!
I've still got room in my popup if anyone needs a bunk.
It ain't the Taj Mahal, but it'll do.
I'll take the bunk threeunder. I can't absolutely promise to be there, but things are looking up for me being there.
If that's not definite enough threeunder, i'll understand. I'll bring my tent, no problems.
It has your name on it.
Looking forward to sharing camp with you.
I will try to make it this year !!!
I just finished tuning some woodies to my new Miller. Hopefully a 55-60 cedar with 160 gr Magnus will do me proud on this hunt!
I'm going try and make it. Bit far out to make a firm commitment, but l'm going to try and get down to lower Michigan to visit my folks, and "piggy back" (pun intended!) the visit with this hunt. It would be great to meet all of you.
I think this would be a life experience. Im 900 miles away, 14 hrs. Im going to try to do this. I am totally new, so any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. My wife thinks this would be neat, abit crazy but neat. My girls want bacon big time :-)
Mike
I'm thinking about this too,, I drove down to Ray Hammonds by myself from Mass, almost fell asleep at the wheel 4 or 5 times then had a guy attack me and try to jack my GPS at a rest area in NC.. it was all worth it though, but I was on my own at Rays so getting to learn from other hunters is important on my next spot and stalk hog trip.
I'm wondering if anyone from the north east wants to car pool and go in half on everything,, I like to rent cars for these long drives but I can even meet someone on the way and go with them and split the costs, ride shotgun, help drive or go in my rental,,,, considering this though and my Berry Morning Star should be nice and broken in too.
Hey Mike,, Jersey is on the way from Mass,,,let me know if you need a partner..
Tajue17
I might take you up on that offer! I will def know the closer we get. Thanks!
Hey Fred. Looking forward to sharing a campfire and some good cajun food with you. Will give you a call tomorrow 'bout the gator grip material!
Squirrel Bait, it will be good to see you again! See if you can drag ol' Ray down with ya (a little birdie told me that he has a new Howard Hill being built) :goldtooth: !!
When are we going to talk event shirts?
I'm in on shirts. Let me know how much and where to send and it's on!
Last time shirts were designed and ordered around October or November last year. My opinion is the same design just different color shirts.
Agree, same logo, different color
Since the time till the hunt is ticking away, I figured that was time to get serious about practicing on a hog target, it aint pretty, but the proportions are pretty close.
Bring on the hogs!! (http://%20 [/IMG]
Dang Paul, Looks like a real pig, I'm not sure pig decoys work all that well though! :biglaugh:
Dave, if I put it in spike heels, a thong and throw in some smell good , you might be surprised what it might draw in! It worked for my last girl friend! The rest ill leave to the imagination! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Bob, I will have to see if I can get Ray down there, I will have to check on Ray and the new Hill now, if not he can shoot one of mine.
Just realized that this is taking place the same weekend as the Kalamazoo Expo. Might be able to hit the last day of the Expo if I work things correctly!

I hope we both can make it Mike! And I'm only 3 hours away! This time I have enough forewarning so I think odds are good.
I'm planning on it too!!!!
This is gonna be good. RC

Thom
I am going to try and make it again 2014, can't wait.
Harry,
Could we get some of our sponsors to donate some raffle items for the hunt and have the proceeds go to St. Judes? Just an idea :bigsmyl:
All right. I unfortunately missed the last one due to unforeseen circumstances, but I hope to make it this year. Count me in at this time.
Tim
Glad you brought this back up Tim.
Wish I could travel that far to hunt with y'all. Looking forward to the stories.
Do you have to be a club member to go? The only long bow i have is a real howard hill, and i dont have a string, i need to get one made. I would love to come
Yeah boy! I had to do a search in hopes that it was going to happen again this year. I was tickled to find it was a go! Gonna double my efforts this year and try for some vacation days. January is usually slow for us, so HOPEFULLY!
Bigb3303, no club, just a Hill style bow which you obviously have.
If I was to leave my wife alone up here in Yankeeland to go hunting and it got cold/snow/sleet, etc.-she'd build a fire with my bows (and me!!!), so I don't think I'll make it.
Got to thinking , my bow is a actully a ben person. Any body know where I could buy a hill style bow? What makes it Hill style?
There are a few for sale now on the classifieds. Several different, very high quality bows out there that are considered "Hill style". There are usually 1 or 2 for sale at any given time.
Suggested reading would be the original "Howard Hill bug" thread at the top of the Pow Wow forum. I promise it will tell you all you need to know about Hill style bows, shooting, models, setup etc.
We sure look forward to having you in the "Hill Gang"!
TTT
it's getting closer
Really looking forward to making it this year, hopefully work won't interfere again.
I'm going with wood arrows and interceptors this year.
Planning on a new set of heavies with my favorite 2 blade Zwickeys!
My set up will be NM Shelton with CE Heritage 150's with 250 gr. VPA's
I cant wait to go on this trip and meet every body! could any body pm me a list of things I should bring ect, that has been before? Also Are many hogs seen or killed, and will evey one be camping in the same area?
I was thinking about hunting in oaky woods, is it any good or better ect? just going to bring the ol john boat and run across the river if its deep enough. I just have a lot of questions so if any one could pm it would be awsome! Thanks

Alot of information can be obtained from the thread regarding the hunt this past Feb:
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=113804#000000
I have made me foam hog target, and shooting it every say to get ready! I have an extra seat in the john boat if any body wants to jump in to hunt oaky woods just let me know! I would love to team up with some one.
What's the address on the camping area? I have to map it out how to get there , becouse I don't have a gps, and no way to use one in my 77 chevy anyway.
It's near the intersection of Magnolia Rd and Reddog Farm Rd in Cochran Ga. I do not know an address.
Thanks! I am supposed to be meeting up with threeunder on the way down to convoy. If anybody else is heading down from virgina east tn area, or coming thru, and want to join in your more then welcome! I am realy looking forward to learning a few things about hogs from you guys!
well its a week closer! I am counting down the days! :D
TTT
Looks like I'll be able to come down the 20th if the truck holds up and will have to leave on the 23rd that morning.
I'm having to work vacation against the retirement clock and saving 100 hours of vacation will get me retired a month earlier. Worth it for me. I'll see some of you guys;)
Hope the truck holds up for you bud!
ttt
I got the vacation days scheduled for this one and look forward to it. last year I could only hunt about a half day. I did get to shake the hand of several good folks and look forward to doing the same this year. I plan on a day trip there in a week or so as soon as I fill my second buck tag and get this itch off of me....RC
I'm waiting to see which fork in the road my schedule takes, but I'm prepared to take a vacation day as well.
Tim
It's getting closer! Any one know if I can run an outboard in the river with my john boat.
The River can and will change at the drop of a hat. There are rocks a plenty and unless you plan on a lot of time "learning" the Section I would stay off of it. If its really low a canoe or such will get you across but know the Ocmulgee has killed a lot of people. It is tricky that far up for someone that does not know it. Lot of good hunting on the Ocmulgee side. RC
Brandon,
Leave it if you want. If you're looking for someone to drive over to Oaky Woods with you a couple of days, I'd be game.
Added a new(to me) Hill Big 5 to my stable a couple of weeks ago.
My Shelton may be relegated to backup bow for this trip.
Yea we might have to do that ken, I think I might leave it, that would make traveling simpler. congrats on the new bow
Ken and Brandon,
Maybe we can caravan down. I'm planning on stopping for an overnite at Ray Hammond's (he and Squirrel Bait - Mike, that is- are coming to the hunt as well) , but I'm sure we can work something out.
When are you guys planning on heading South?
Got my Super D ready to go with AD Trads and 200 grain Tuskers up front!
Bob
Bob,
Brandon and I were planning on meeting in Wytheville Thursday and convoying down I-77.
But it's looking like I may have to work half a day Friday and leave from Roanoke about noon.
I won't know for absolute sure until that Wed. or Thursday.
I think we're both going to try to stay an extra day or two.
I'll keep both of you informed as I get any more information.
Ken
I'd love to get in on the caravan as well. I'll be either running I-85 to Charlotte then 77 from there, or I can pick up 77 in Statesville and follow the crowd.
Well we defiantly need to hook up. I am planning on coming down on Thursday morning and we should meet up some where! Where would be a central location? I haven't planed a route yet but any way would work for me.
Fingers and toes fingers and toes.
Let's fire this thread up.
What's everyone going to be shooting in Georgia?
I'll have two bows with me: a NM Shelton and a HH Big 5.
Arrows will be either CE Heritage 150's or AD Trad Lites.
Will be shooting VPA broadheads.
Super D with woodies from snag ready to spill some blood. MEAN little 175 grain Simmons on the business end. BLEED baby BLEED!
I will be using my new mad dog longbow! A special hill model made for me, 50lb at 26inches goldtip 3555s tiped with slick tricks! 515 grains of hog destruction ! :D
Hill Wesley 68" 55@30 1/2", and I'll probably bring my Halfbreed 68" 50@28 as a backup. It will depend on getting my arrows tuned. They may fly better out of one of the 70" 50@28 bows.
My current broadhead setup is cedar 65-70 with 145gr Zwickey Eskimos, but I am going to put together a set of Ash arrows with a set of the new Tuffhead 225gr. Not sure what the total will be, but if I can get them to tune up, they should hit like a truck!
Do we want to try and meet up on I-77 in charollett? Its out of my way a ways, but I would do it just to convoy, as I am not familer with were we are going in georgia.
ttt
Wish I could do this! Just too far at 1543 miles to Chochran form my house! Just can't afford it.
Maybe there should be a Western Hill Hog Hunt?

I just put up all my stock "Carolina Nights" (Hill Style) bows on sale via the Sponsor Classifieds. I'm trying to make this hunt but right now the Mother in Law has moved in and needs some medical help. If I can make it I'll bring what doesn't sell as loaners for anyone that needs a bow to participate.
Toelke Super D, 55# @ 28 (I'm pulling 58#'s), Arrow Dynamic Trads with 100 grain inserts, 200 grain hair-poppin' sharp Tuskers or Muzzy's up front. I believe arrow weight is around 665 grains.
Should be a blast!
(BTW, Ken , I do not have a back-up, and, well, how do I say this, all your bows are bass akwards :goldtooth: )!
Brandon,
Suits me to meet up somewhere. I'm flexible with the other guys. I will need some leadership myself, as I missed last year. As we get closer, and I can indeed get the time off, we'll finalize the travel.
Tim
LMAO...Bob!!!!
All you gotta do is hold them upside down! I promise it'll work.
It's getting closer!
Yep,
I should know in the next week or so if I'm going to be able to commit. I've had my fingers crossed so long, they're cramped in that position....I may not be able to shoot my bow!!!!
Haha yea I'm looking forward to it! Hopefully we will see some hogs! Does anyone know if they have any color phase squirrels or fox squirrels there?
Getting closer. I very much need a camping/hunting trip under my belt to calm the nerves from our busy season at work.RC
Right there with ya RC...Work is keeping me on edge...need some downtime badly.
Well my wife took her horses down to Aiken on Saturday and I slipped a couple HH style longbows in the horse trailer... couple Paxton Talon Classic & Dave Johnson. I'll be in Aiken right after Xmas for the winter. Just checked the map, looks like a 3 hour drive for me. Might have to gets some practice hog hunting in around the farm first...but this sure sounds like a fun road trip. Anyone coming down SC 20 out of Columbia? I'd sure like to follow along and make this gathering...tippit
Tippit- I pretty sure I'll be making the trip. We need to get Benjy on board with a hill bow!
Hey Blaine,
I have at least 3 Hill bows at the farm. We better try some arm twisting :) t will be great to meet you.
It will not not take very much arm twisting for me, I just have alot going on in January. That's a good thing though!!!!
I do have some nice looking wood arrows (thanks to Blaine) that should work perfectly out of a Hill bow!
Benjy
Yep, there is a lot going on in Jan around us...Feb, Mar, April, etc :)
Still not sure if I can break away, but starting to see if I can box out the time. Would love to see people again and a few new faces it looks like too. Heck, maybe we won't get a foot of rain and there will be a little pork on the spit before the end this time!
Sorry to say I don't think I'll make it this year, having a knee replacement surgery Monday.I know It will be a great time, be safe and good luck to everyone. Looking forward to the stories coming from this.
Good Luck Harry
Good luck with the knee replacement Harry. Just means you'll be ready to go for the 2015 hunt.
How did you guys fair last year ?
Any kills ?
Any sightings ?
Anyone catch any fish ?
ChuckC
Last year was rough Chuck. We had a lot of rain and only a few sightings. I think only 2 or 3 shots were taken.
Is this area normally pretty decent ? At least with pig sightings ?
I am trying to talk myself into a trip south, but first I have to build a bow. I finally have time to actually take a trip like this.
ChuckC
I have never not got on pigs in a full day hunt there. Knawbone and I got on pigs 30 minutes out of the truck last year. He had already been on pigs two days in a row earlier ,then the bottom fell out and it rained for bout a month it seemed.RC
That stuff happens nearly anywhere. Can't do much about it, cept roll with the punches.
Thanks guys. Sounds like a fun time and getting to meet some of the crew makes it even more of a tempting offer.
RC how bout them ponds. Folks catch some fish there ?
ChuckC
Its getting Closer guys! I just called and talked to the Georgia DNR about what liscense I need to get. She told me that I DO NOT need a wma permit with just a 3day liscens. Only the hunting liscens. Just fyi for you other non resident guys.
Hey far rider and three under, ever decide where we wanted to meet to convoy down? I am planing on leaving for georgia thursday morning the 23rd.
Dang I must have misread the WMA permit requirement last year.
That would be good news. $20 vs. $93 is a huge savings!
It is looking like I will finish in Roanoke at about 4pm Thursday Brandon. Will head toward GA after that. MapQuest says 8 1/2 hr trip. I'll probably get a room overnight and try to pull in Friday morning, set camp and hunt Friday afternoon.
I think they told you wrong about the wma permit.I would call and get a second answer with a name and number .
The big lake has been closed to rebuild a leaking dam. The small pond has a few fish but gets fished a lot. RC
I remember (after I bought mine) someone called and got that answer too last year. Reading more carefully, I also remember thinking they may have been correct about the wma permit if you weren't hunting deer season. Worth a closer look, but it was too late for me and I dropped it.
i would be really sure and talk with a wildlife officer...most places you need a WMA anytime you are on WMA land whether hunting or not. Permit is for access to the land...
Better safe than sorry...or get name and badge number of who told you it was not needed just in case...or get it in writing by email.
I called them twice last year before huning. They advised that a 3 day "Apprentice" licence was the best option. I called the second time to confirm and they specifically said that's all you need to hnt the WMA from out of state - and also said I could buy another 3 day licence if I chose to stay on after the first one lapsed. $20.00 all in I believe.
From the Georgia reg's
Apprentice License
Offers potential hunters (16 years of age and older) an opportunity to hunt for 3 days without completing a hunter education course. Also includes saltwater and general freshwater fishing privileges on WMAs and PFAs. A big game license must also be purchased to hunt deer, turkey or bear, and a trout license must also be purchased to fish for mountain trout.
NOTE this says FISHING privileges, not hunting.
RESIDENT
3-day Resident Hunting & Fishing Combo License - $3.50 (3-day combo includes general hunting and fishing, and fishing privileges on WMAs and PFAs)
This part SAYS resident, however the price chart shows a non-resident has the same license available for $20. It also says " and fishing priviliges" .
We really could use a professional opinion (from the local warden that would enforce it there maybe ?) for doing it right.
ChuckC
Going to check with our office in area we hunt to make sure they understand same interpretation before someone finds out hard way...thanks for info
we have contact with local DNR officer in the area we have our PBS Member Hunt again this year for hogs....to get his read and input since he will be one policing our hunts. :)
Thanks Brock! They were pretty dead certain last year - I'd be a bit irked to find out I'd been given incorrect info on something which can have such significant consequences.
I`m planning a day trip over there maybe tomorrow or Wednesday and will let you guys know. I`ll ask the resident Warden. Hope to post up some pics and maybe a dead porker as well.RC
ttt
Had things come up and did not get to go. Maybe next week.I look forward to the Hill Gang hunt.I plan on getting there on Monday and staying till Sunday Lord Willing.RC
Brandon,
I won't be able to leave on Thursday, although I truly wish I could. I will hopefully make it down on Friday afternoon. Something may change, if it does, we'll get it hooked up.
Tim
Ok, all looks good. On the calendar at home and at work. Driving down Wednesday, back Sunday. Gives me three days in between -- not a lot, but better than a poke in the eye!
Looking forward to seeing guys again as well as meeting new people who weren't able to make it last year.
-Dave
Was the answer to the licensing question ever obtained ?
ChuckC
I called and spoke to a Ga DNR rep an she advised to get the WMA. She said the three day apprentice would allow access to WMA for things such as fishing and hiking but for actual hunting she understood the regs to mean a WMA license PLUS the three day apprentice was needed.
I ain't takin' the chance.
She also advised that a three day apprentice could be consecutive for a 6 day spread with the purchase of two back-to-back licenses, however, she stated she would purchase an initial three-day apprentice license online and then purchase another three day when in Ga before the first three day expired. She did not think the online software would recognise the user wanting two three-day licenses back-to-back in a single purchase.
Clear as mud?
I'm going to buy one online for Mon-Wed and buy the second one in a separate purchase transaction for Wed thru Sat. Total of $113.
For an out-of-state hunter that ain't bad for a week's worth of camping and hunting.
Apprentice
Hunting License
This license offers potential hunters
(16 years of age and older) an
opportunity to hunt for three (3)
days without completing a hunter
education course. It also includes
fishing privileges on WMAs and
PFAs and this license may be
purchased multiple times. All other
license requirements still apply. For
more information, go to:
http://www.gohuntgeorgia.com/recreational-licenses
This should clear it up.
From the regs, page 17:
WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA (WMA) LICENSE
is required for any person 16 years old or
older, who does not possess a valid Honorary,
Sportsman, or Lifetime Sportsman's License,
when hunting on a WMA, PFA or State Park
(except that any person hunting on a State Park
quota hunt is exempt from this requirement).
******************
I take that to mean a three day apprentice does not exempt one from a WMA license.
Wishing everyone the best of luck and dry weather for the HH hog hunt. Sure wish I could be there again this year. We all had a great time last year despite the rain. Would be great to re visit with all who attended last year and to meet the TG's that didn't. Ocmulgee is a great place to hunt. If you get a chance to hunt with RC, do so, the man has pig radar!I have a feeling some pigs will die this year. Be safe everyone.
who from New England is going to this? before trying for the last minute time off I'm checking to see if I can catch a ride and split the costs.
I was hunting a WMA in N Georgia last fall and was advised that a WMA permit would be required for any activity on a WMA as of 2013. They mentioned mushroom hunting, birding, and a few other activities. I'm not finding anything better than what Bud posted but I'm covered by last year's annual still.
Thom
Yes guy's, you do need a WMA permit to hunt WMA's in Georgia. It was 73.00 for the WMA permit last year and is good for one year from date of issue. Unless that requirement has changed. Wish I could attend as my license and permit are still valid until 2/03/2014.......just looked.
Can you buy licenses ( hunting and WMA) down there ? Are they good immediately or do you need to purchase them in advance ?
CHuckC
Purchase either online or at a vendor locally. There may be a fee charged by the local vendor of about $3.
Chuck, you can order them over the phone. You can purchase them down there if you want to. And no you don't need to order in advance, but of course you will need them active the days you hunt. I'm not sure about Georgia, but in SC the 3 day license had to be three consecutive days.
Just looked at mine, the WMA is good until 2/19. Guess I need to go online and snag a three-day hunting still.
Anybody from WI or IL thinking of scooting down there for this ? I have it penciled in and am thinking of leaving earlier, like, the Monday before, so I have a few extra days to explore etc, then stay thru to Saturday or Sunday.
ChuckC
Gee Chuck that might have been a possibility but I forgot about this hunt and already committed to going to K-Zoo. I don't live far from you, would have worked out good.
Let's think about next year then Pete.

I had thought I could make it, but I'll have to wait for the next one. Lazed around most of the summer and fall with very little going on at work (I'm retired, sorta, so no matter), but now I'm overloaded with work!
I'm still trying to make a quick run down to Kzoo, and then up to Mt. Pleasant to see my folks, then back here to work.
Good luck, you Hill Gang Hog Hunters!
Two weeks from today I'll be huntin' hogs. Hope to see one closer than 1/2 mile this time...
Let the countdown begin! Still iffy on my attendance, but I certainly wish you all the best of luck.
Tim
I'm a definite for this year, and I was in the picture last year, can I get added to the list in the first post now Darren?
Killie should be coming again as well as another friend. Looks like we'll arrive on Thursday afternoon now, hopefully early enough to get in a little evening hunt. Might depend on whether Killie got a better alarm clock than last year's....
dbl post
Some questions before the trip. At this time I plan to drive down and participate and get to meet a bunch of TradGangers. Built a HH bow just for the occasion.
The proposed camping situation.. Is it truck camping or do I need to carry my gear in a ways ?
How "safe" is the campground , historically (re leaving gear around) ?
Will I need to use a tiny tent under a tree, or is there room for a slightly larger spread ?
Are we able to hunt right from camp or is driving to another point pretty much required ?
IS potable water available nearby or should i bring my own ?
For the folks that have done this and been successful.. how do you haul out said piggie, and do i need any particular gear to facilitate this feat ?
Starting to get packed already.

Primitive camping. No potable water. Big camp ground and walk or drive to hunt.I skin`m where they fall.RC
If we're at the same place as last year, lots of relatively flat ground for big tents right out the back of your truck. Pick your spot. Was safe enough last year. Generally there were a couple of guys around camp at any given time. I hunted from camp, some people drove, some did both.
Wow, no real action on this post with the hunt days away? Anyone still going? I am assuming we are at the same camp location as last year then? Or should I be finding my way somewhere new?
I'm not going to make it this year but I wish everyone the best of luck! :archer:

Folks, I purchased this the other day with the intention of giving it away during the weekend hunt coming up. I've recently found out there is an award in place for the first pig shot, so I need some help coming up with an award for this one. Help from the gallery would be appreciated.
I intend for this to be an annual award starting 2014. If I make it down, I'll present it during the hunt, but if not, I'll ship it to the lucky hunter.
Very nice pewter MADE IN USA pin by NY Artist Rich Dougherty.
Go Gettem'!

I'm trying to decide what to do.
Work has kept me away from my family every weekday and night since Jan. 1. Am scheduled to be gone this coming week until the day I would leave to head to the hunt. Then, after returning, scheduled to be gone the next two weeks.
As much as I want to go, I have my doubts that it is the right thing to do.
Will make a decision by tomorrow night. I am so thankful for a good job, but the travel sucks sometimes.
I reckon it's about time for ya'll to start saddling up. Most of the dirt roads should have dried up enough so you don't get stuck, but I'm sure you can still find a few places to get bogged down in, if you've really got your heart set on it.
Not sure what to do. Spoke with "Samantha" at the GA DNR customer serive group (supposedly re licensing) about implications of purchasing the licenses on-line, and I was told that I do not need that WMA tag for "less than an annual licence", in other words , if I buy a three day, I am covered.
I explained what we discussed and she went to her supervisor who told her that she is correct... I do not need a WMA tag if I buy a three day. It sure doesn't say that in the regulations.
ChuckC
They are wrong
Just spoke with the site managers for the WMA and they agree with you RC.
Wow, there is a disconnect there. Anyway, I will buy the WMA tag, no biggie, just want to do it correctly !
Heading down in the am.

ChuckC
RC have you been there yet (you mentioned going there Monday)? Seeing any fresh sign ? Leave us a couple live ones to chase please !
ChuckC
Leaving in the Morning Lord Willing. My Grandson had his first basketball game ever this evening and there is no pig worth missing that.RC
Well, it's official. Business trip over the weekend just firmed up. I'm out....just like last year. Maybe next year, hope you guys have a blast and stock the meat pole.
Tim
Wish I could make it...but my wife already had plans to fly to Crested Butt to ski with my son who is a ski patroller there. I'm stuck on the farm feeding 4 horses & 4 dogs. Have a blast...tippit
A crested butte is far prettier than a crested butt.
Wish I could be at this hunt. Wish I could be mucking stalls, too.
Killdeer
Ain't we a group of "sorry to be missin' the hunt" souls. We need a crying in our beer make up day!
Tim
Mini rendezvous happened last night just north of Atlanta, 3pf us will be putting up camp in a few hours. I love that instant I hear my alarm and remember it's the pig hunt alarm and not the work one!!!! Just a few more hours!
Thom
Killie,
I don't muck stalls...they built fences & stall gates to keep me out! I will feed occasionally but only for hunting points :)
You are missing out, Jeff.
Some of my happiest memories are of mixing up hot bran mashes in the feed room on bitter cold afternoons.
I am bumping this to the top for the convenience of the folks who will post of the glorious camp they put up today, and the pigs that they will feast on tomorrow.
Killdeer :bigsmyl:
Anybody hear from the gang?
Tim
I know that Thom has skewered a 'dilla. Still waiting on the pics!
The pics of the dilla ain't the ones you want to see. There is a better pic from today but it's not mine to share :)
I'd elaborate but it's time for BBQ dinner!
Thom
Roads are iced in here in southern Louisiana. 70 collisions just in the City this morning. We aren't used to this stuff!!!
Good luck guys
If there is pig on the barby, and beer in the coolerators, I would not count on posts until about ten tomorrow morning.
Killdeer :campfire:
Anybody have a clue why you can't spell barby with an ie?
:dunno:
Wondering just what I missed due to work. LOL.
Anxious to hear cause I'm living vicariously through all the attendees this weekend!
Waiting patiently for pics. :coffee:

First I got to say I had an outstanding time on this hunt. I regret I did not get to stay but just one day last year so as quick as dates were set for this year I started hounding my Boss. Both of them, the one at work and the one of near 29 years at home. It worked out and I was able to get there on Wed Morning. I planned a bit sooner but would not miss my Grandsons first ever Basketball game.
I pulled in to camp around 11:00 am and had camp set in maybe 30 minutes. If my Wife had came it would have taken 4 hours....
I grabbed my bow and went to check a few spots. I had tried to get here some weeks back but could not turn loose. The last time I had been here was the one day last year then 3 days the year before so I did not know what was gonna be hot at the time as pig hunting changes a lot with River Stage and Mast.
I found a couple of promising areas and then headed to camp to hook up with Darren "Tradlongbow".
Someone from last year may recognize this ...
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0357_1_zps99860a21.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0357_1_zps99860a21.jpg.html)
After a Handshake and some talk we were off for the Swamp. We would be covering ground looking for hot sign and a pig but really needed a day of hunt/scouting for a good start. People often make the mistake of hunting the first decent sign they see , if they covered a bit more ground a lot of times much better places can be found.
I should have kept some stuff written down so I could remember all but we checked several different spots and found a lot of sign in some and a little in others but every where we went there was pig sign.
When I say spots that means usually a mile loop back to the truck at least. On my last days hunt I went just over a 5 mile loop.Looking at stuff like this and shooting lots of arrows makes it worth it..
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0364_zpsdcadfe01.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0364_zpsdcadfe01.jpg.html)

In the last pic the River had been flooded a while and had fallen out in about the last 10 days. The trees have a "mud" color to them.
WE hunted the evening with no pork sighted then got a mid Morning start the next day after Breakfast. It was maybe 25 degrees during the night and my new sleeping blanket plus the two old ones all bundled together made for a great nights rest.
We drove to the "town" side of the place to an area I had killed pigs before in years past and made maybe a 4 mile loop. I heard one group of pigs I`m sure way ahead of us head into a huge thicket. I`m sure they winded us because the wind was swirling so bad had we walked with out nose in it we would have never lost sight of the truck.
The whole end of the place was covered in sign but we did not see any pigs. We did find a neat looking blow down..
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0361_zpse830b9c2.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0361_zpse830b9c2.jpg.html)
After lunch we hit another spot next to a big thicket hoping to catch some pigs coming out to feed near dark. There were still a lot of Water oak acorns on the ground and with the pressure from other hunters we knew they would be coming out late. Right at last light a group of pigs came out between us but it had already got to late to try to get to them.
Paul "Moleman" rolled into camp at sometime around this part of the tale and we shook hands and a new Friend was made. Paul is a cool guy that is fun to hang with. After another 20-25 degree night I figured the pork would move late Morning so I slept in.
The other guys in the group pic began to roll in and a fine group of Hill style longbows were there. I shot A Sunset Hill that made me really want to take my longbow making to another level. It was the finest longbow I have ever shot.I also got to handle a one made by my Hero John Shulz.Simple beauty.
I struck out of camp maybe at around 1:30 and before I got to my planned spot for the afternoon I saw two nice boars in the road. I drove a bit farther down and a sow runs across the road.I`m talking about a two path woods road not a public road. I stopped and looked around.Plenty of cover meaning...THICK. Scattered water oaks and today at least for now a steady wind. I drove on down to the spot I had in mind and decided to check it out then come back to see if I could fine these pigs after they had time to simmer down. There was a very narrow bottom I could walk and listen for pigs through the thick stuff.
I made a short walk at one place and saw a few deer. I actually saw deer nearly every time I hunted. I looped down to the River and followed a slough that was running into the River..
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0365_zpsa378d6f3.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0365_zpsa378d6f3.jpg.html)

I then headed back to the "Hilly" side of the place to see if I could find pork where I had seen the ones in the road. This looked like a good place to start...
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0344_zps929c6115.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0344_zps929c6115.jpg.html)
I covered maybe a half mile and spotted movement ahead of me in some thick stuff. I got to about 40 yards and pulled out my video camera and managed to get a bit of shaky footage of two small "grill" pigs. I filmed as I got closer and at about 20 yards I came to a place that would be tough to get through without a lot of noise. I was on my knees and leaned around a stump I was behind and saw yellow feathers when they look the best...going through the spot I`m looking at...The small pig ran in the thick stuff and I could here noise in there and I decided to back out as it was only maybe 2:30 or so . I went about 400 yards in the wind and hunted about an hour before coming to take up the trail. Lots of blood...
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0374_zps57bf554d.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0374_zps57bf554d.jpg.html)
As I was trailing a pig jumped up and stood for a second, I thought it was the one I had shot and maybe my eyes fooled me and I made a bad shot . I had a second to shoot and probably could have made the shot but did not want to risk pushing a wounded pig I knew would lay up close by . It trotted off and I looked to my left and my pig was laying there dead. Man...I should have shot the other one.
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0372_zpsf2c0aa77.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0372_zpsf2c0aa77.jpg.html)
It don`t look like it in the pic but it very thick in this spot. I was a short distance to where the ridge dropped off and so I took the porker there for skinning because I had plans for coming back to this thicket and did not want buzzards flapping over a carcass and spooking critters the next day.
Beautiful place. Looks like I`m hunting with my HillBilly Buddies. Try as I might I could not make a small pig look big in the pics. Hey, it was a good shot...
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0379_zpscc3b1d8a.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0379_zpscc3b1d8a.jpg.html)
I got the pig in the cooler and was off to find more pork. I made a near mile bearing through a thick area and heard pigs coming my way. again I got the camera out for shaky footage . It was a huge sow with maybe 8-10 shoats with her. They were coming straight at me and I had no time to move . The wind was at a bad angle but the sow would come by at maybe 20 yards if she didnt wind me. I was laying my camera down as she got near my shooting lane when she locked up. Woofed and took off. I leaned around the tree and got some going away footage and "woofs" from the sow. Which in pig talk is kinda like laughter...
I went by several trees like this while there and this one had a lot of "cutter" marks on it..
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0330_zps22f8fc4c.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0330_zps22f8fc4c.jpg.html)
I hunted till dark only seeing a couple of deer and a big gobbler that could have kilt me if he wanted. I almost stepped on him before he busted.I don`t know if he was cold or just wanting to see if he could care scare the crap out of me...he did.
I headed on back towards camp and I was almost at the railroad tracks on the paved road..some of you fellas know where that is I saw a HUGE boar in the road. I`m thinking thats the biggest pig I`ve ever seen. It was facing directly away in the middle of the road and was very thick. As I got closer the big "Boar" turned into a Bear. He ran up on the high bank and ran a bit in the thicket. I fumbled for my camera and got a cruddy pic zoomed a bit in low light but it was very cool...
(http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w39/rcswampbucket/IMG_0388_zps9f204254.jpg) (http://s172.photobucket.com/user/rcswampbucket/media/IMG_0388_zps9f204254.jpg.html)
Right above where the trees make the X he is broadside facing left. You can see his rounded "butt" just to the right of the small gray tree. It was very cool.
Got back to camp and everyone told of their days adventures. Some fellas had shots and I think all but one saw pigs.We gathered up and went to Hawkinsville and ate at a Seafood Buffet...Man we really roughed it on this trip...
My last Day hunt was great I decided to take the road to the "WhiteHouse" and when it ended get a bearing and cut through the middle of the swamp hoping some pigs may still be hanging out on some of the Islands. after about 1.5 miles from the truck you hit the River and across is this...

Here is a little better close-up. Its a shame for a fella to have to live in a "shack" like this on the River.....

I made my run through the swamp and came to a beat down path headed in a thicket. Two steps in and I heard a big pig get up. He was maybe 15 yards and we both knew we were there but I had no shot. He stood a few seconds then woofed and ran. I cut my bearing through the swamp and headed to camp. The other hunters rolled in . I had already broke camp and said my goodbyes and was on the road home.
I camp here nearly every year around this time of year or the last week in March. Its always fun with some action. I don`t always kill stuff but usually have a chance at something and thats all a hunter can ask for. Thank you Good Lord for meeting new Friends and a safe trip.RC

I was there for Friday afternoon. RC killed a pig midday Friday. Only one that got stuck that week.

Not true. However, you might say it was the only one that was stuck proper like.
:dunno:
3 Shots Dave?!?!?!?
You do have a story to tell.
Dave is trying to think up something believable
Dan, I was in college. I don't remember a thing. .

I arrived at the WMA Thursday about noon. I had left earlier than planned when my travelling companions had to bow out for noble reasons in order to not have to drive the whole thing at once and maybe get some hunting in Thursday. Camp was small when I arrived, only three tents were there. Shortly RC and Darren showed up for lunch. I can't remember when Paul came back to camp. Not too long after, Thom, Steve, and Nick piled in. I pitched a tent, ate some lunch, and then headed out hunting with RC and Darren for the afternoon. They dropped me off part way down a road so I could cover some of my own territory, but not until RC had started to tell me how I should go about hunting hogs. Turns out it's not like hunting deer, this would be important soon. I never saw much besides some sign that first day, although I ended up stalking some birds making a hell of a racket in some brush.
Dinner that night was tenderloins from my snackpack I shot earlier this year along with some red beans and rice. Delicious. Time around the campfire was great, but it was getting colder than I had planned for in southern Georgia. I hunkered down in my little 3-season backpacking tent and made it through the 24 degree night without too much discomfort, but I was wishing I had brought an extra blanket.
Friday morning Darren had the fire going and I hung out around that and drank my cowboy coffee. RC came over and announced that he was heading to the Huddle House for breakfast. I invited myself along as that sounded better than my frozen bagels or Darren's soup. (Darren ate soup for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on this trip.) The omelet hit the spot and on the way back RC pointed me to a couple of good areas. We got back around 10 and it was time to shoot and compare everyone's bows. With a little encouragement, I decided to take my newly minted yew and black glass bow hunting that day over my old standby. Maybe it would be my good luck charm. It was time to get hunting, so I jumped in the hybrid hunting rig and headed down some access roads that my wife will never believe (or forgive me if she does start to believe.)

I covered a lot of ground in one area, coming across deer, squirrels, and even a coyote at 30 yds; but no pigs and not too much fresh sign. I took a few pics of my new bow down by the river. And I looked at some of the ice formations in the swamp.

I came back to the car about 2 to grab some lunch and decided to try another area that looked good on the topo map. Again, the car's plastic skid plates made a lot of noise getting down the access road, but at least it was dry enough I felt I could get back up the hills. Down in this new area there was a lot of sign. I walked a firebreak for a bit, then sat down to listen. After about 30 minutes I thought I could hear 'em. RC was right, they really do make some noise when up and about. I headed in that direction, my heart starting to speed up a little bit as there was huge amounts of very fresh sign and I was closing in on the noise. Then I saw one. And then another. And I could hear more. I got down low and started to work my way out of the palmettos and into the hardwoods. I made it behind a large oak, but slightly spooked a large sow with piglets. Staying still, she eventually calmed down and laid down about 20 yds away to feed the little screamers. At that time, another sow with piglets interrupted. They each managed to get their own separated and they both began to feed about 25 yards away. Up the hill I could now see 2 more pigs moving in my general direction. The wind was steady in my favor – I couldn't believe my luck. The sows stopped nursing and got up to feed just out of my range. The little piglets didn't move far, but practiced rooting around themselves.
I had been close to pigs for about 10 minutes and not quite sure what to do when one started coming towards me. It weaved through some trees and brush and was on a path to end up directly downwind of me. It was at the edge of my range at about 20-22 yds, and it was all black. I figured if it winded me, they would all be gone so this was my window. I raised my arm as I drew, hit anchor, and the darned thing turned just so its vitals were behind a little tree. Let down. It came away from the tree and I started to draw again as it turned towards me. I figured a head shot was a bad idea. Let 'er down again. It turned to the right and stepped forward leaving a little gap in the brush to shoot through. My arrow was on its way. But I don't remember picking a spot the third time. The arrow hit high, above and behind the shoulder. It turned as it went in, and the shaft was sticking up in the air at about 45 degrees as the thing turned and ran off. I watched it go, as did the other pigs. But they didn't follow. After a few minutes, they settled down and went back to business.
I stood there in a bit of shock. I needed my heart to stop pounding so hard. I needed to figure out what to do. I needed to stop smashing my forehead into the tree for shooting high. The wind was still in my favor. There were pigs around me still. I started to move towards one that was feeding my way.
It was a large sow, light brown with black spots. I made it behind another large oak as it fed across in front of me, occasionally showing glimpses of the vitals as it went past trees and a few palmettos. It had now been about 40 minutes since I had gotten close to the pigs. I watched a large, black boar chase some pigs around farther up the hill. The wind was steady still. I've never heard of wind so steady for 40 minutes that pigs within 40 yards don't eventually wind you. The sow worked closer and came out from behind a palmetto at 15 yards. Broadside. There was a 2 inch black spot behind the shoulder. It's like it was put there for me to concentrate on. I leaned to my right as it paused to root. I need to watch my lower limb on the tree. Check. I need to pick a spot. Check. Raise my bow and draw. Check. Solid anchor. Check. Relax the muscles in my forearm and wrist – solid back tension. Check.
WHAAAAPPP!!!!!
Wait, what just happened? Oh yeah, the bottom limb. Whoops.
The arrow stuck in the dirt, nowhere near my pig. It ran off, but not far. The others were unspooked. The wind was still in my favor. The game wasn't over, but the sun was setting. I was wondering what happened to my pig. I could hear pigs fighting and making a racket off in that direction. But there were pigs between there and me, and I still had thoughts I might get a shot. I watched more pigs, including my sow rounding up brood that had been about 30 yards away. They fed again. They bedded down for the cold night. They were harassed by another pig and moved away. I was hoping for a shot on this new pig which had moved into the 20 yard range. But darkness was coming fast. I didn't think I could shoot that far, but if it hurried up and moved so that I could get within 10 yards, I felt I could see well enough to make that happen. I didn't know the time. But reality got the better of me, the few minutes it took for me to get closer also made it so that even 12-13 yards was too far in the darkness. I was done. I watched and listened to the dark shape for a little while. It was still within 25 yds or so when I just stood up and walked away. It didn't spook. The wind was still in my favor. I had been there with the pigs for about 1.5 hours, taken two shots, and if I had been more proactive might have fared better on opportunities.
But now it was time to head back to my car. My being an idiot wasn't over yet. I had forgotten my flashlight back in my tent. Luckily, I was only a few hundred yards from the fire break, and that would lead me back to my car. I headed back to camp to tell my story and figured I'd be back early in the morning to look for the pig I had stuck.
(To be continued....)
I'm confused.
I, regrettably, decided to bail on last year's hunt at the last minute because of the weather. Even so, I was glad to be able to create the shirt design for the endeavor, and I enjoyed all of the planning and anticipation, even though I ended up not going. I love the whole concept of the Hill Gang, being a play on Trad Gang, and I love that the idea was born in that epic HH thread here on Trad Gang. I've also been looking forward to future Hill Gang hunts, perhaps at different times of the year and in different locations as previously discussed. I haven't participated on the thread for this year's hunt because I knew I couldn't attend (I'm a school teacher and didn't fall on my winter break like it did last year), but I still enjoyed following along, and I was happy for those of you who could attend this year.
Now here's where I'm confused, last year's group photo ends up in a foreign trad magazine (see below) in an article about Darren's (tradlongbow – who started this thread) group he formed after last year's hunt, the 'Traditional Archery Society'. Then the group photo from this year's hunt (not posted here for some reason) has the guys holding a 'Traditional Archery Society' banner in front of them. On TAS's forum someone (apparently also confused) asked if the Hill Gang hunt and the TAS hunt were one in the same. Darren replied that he was main organizer of the Hill Gang hunt last year and he decided to continue it this year under 'Traditional Archery Society'. That's news to me! This thread is titled '2014 Hill Gang Hog Hunt' and I didn't see TAS ever mentioned anywhere, and Darren doesn't seem to have posted here since page 6. I hate controversy, but this seems shady. I was hoping Trad Gang's 'Hill Gang' was something that would continue and grow. I've heard of hijacking threads, but not hijacking hunts. Maybe it is just me, but Darren throwing a different trad group's name on these hunts that were born and organized here among my Trad Gang family members seems disloyal and just plain wrong.
It looks like if there are going to be legitimate 'Hill Gang' hunts in the future, a loyal Trad Ganger will have to take over the reigns and organize them.

Part 2:
I think I was the last one back to camp that night. Darren had headed home. I had gotten a text from him telling me of RC's success and then another letting me know he had gotten a flat before making it too far down the road. Most of the others were getting ready to go out to a buffet for dinner. Only Chuck and I hung around and cooked there in camp. It was nice in front of the camp fire as we ate. Eventually the rest of the gang rolled back in. And I mean rolled. They all looked like they were having trouble walking normal after doing what I'm guessing is considerable damage to the buffet. Campfire time was more limited, and I rolled into bed at a reasonable hour. I did realize that the Coleman lantern could heat up my tiny tent very nicely – allowing a baby wipe bath and some fresh clothes before settling in for another cold night. And it was cold. I think it hit 19 degrees there in southern GA that night. I woke up in the morning to find my contacts embedded in little frozen blocks of saline.
After breakfast around Paul's campfire, I hit the woods early to go look for my pig. I was in the woods before 10. (That's early on a cold morning pig hunting, but of course seems about 4 hours late for deer hunting.) I started working towards where I was the night before. I figured I'd warm up shooting at some stumps as I tried to locate a blood trail. But as I got there, I heard pigs again! They had moved to what would have been downwind the night before, but the wind had switched ends that morning. I started to move close to the same spotted sow I had smacked the tree shooting at last night. And then a red pig surprised me from the left. I soon had a shot opportunity. It turned away leaving me a quartering away shot with its head also turned. There was the back rib and then about six inches of pig to the left. I concentrated on a spot just the right of that rib, made sure my lower limb was clear, anchored, and released. No idea what I did with my right arm, but it wasn't pretty. My arrow sailed harmlessly past at 7 inches to the left of where I was looking. Are you kidding me? At least it was a clean miss, but still.
That pig swapped ends and tried to figure out what was going on. I drew another arrow, but my confidence was now pretty much shot. The pig came a few yards closer and then laid down in a sunny spot, facing me. I found myself pinned behind that palmetto, with no shot at a pig only about 15 yds away. As easy as I found it to sneak up on feeding pigs, they are much more jumpy to the noise I made on the dry leaves when just laying there. That sow came and fed her piglets in front of me again, offering me nothing but a shot at her back as she laid in front of me at about the same 15 yds. I thought about what I could throw to get the resting pig to stand up and spin around. I thought about how to get a shot at the sow. But I didn't come up with anything. The sow moved on without giving me a decent shot, and I wasn't about to take a marginal shot at this point. And eventually it happened. The wind was no longer my friend. It swirled and that dozing pig jumped up and turned tail faster than I could have imagined. Oh well. My trip was already made!
I picked up a blood trail about 50 yds from where I shot the pig. I found a two good spots close together:
But then it was tiny drops every 5-10 feet. Progress was slow. I lost the trail after about 20 yds. I couldn't find another drop. But I did see my arrow laying off in the distance and got excited. It was broken off about 8 inches from the tip (holding it next to another arrow.) It had blood on the remaining 2-3 inches. But there was not a drop to be found around the arrow. And I looked hard. Eventually, I gave up and started a search grid in that direction for any more larger blood spots or a pig. I eventually gave up after a couple of hours. My initial reaction to my bad shot was that it wasn't going to result in a recovered pig. But I held out hope, you never know for sure. My hope was pretty much gone.
I came on a couple of pigs one more time that day, but they were moving and not feeding and I was unable to close the gap. I did end up within 30 years of a nice big doe and her fawn. I tried to work my way over to another area that looked good on the map. I crossed through the swamp and tried the other side of Shellstone Creek by crossing on a log and working my way back to the west. But it was getting late and then it became hard to find another point to cross back over the creek. I thought I had managed to cross it a couple of times only to find that I had either crossed onto an island or just a tributary. It was getting dark and I was a long ways from the car. I had flashlight, but I wanted to get across that creek asap. I finally found a spot and made a beeline for my car. But in the final minutes of dusk, I heard pigs again. After about 10 minutes, it was obvious I would never get close enough to see them with enough light. But now I face the challenge of finding the tiny opening in the thicket that had the path back to my car. I knew it was close, but finding it in the dark with only a flashlight was more work than I would have imagined.
I was getting tired and hungry by the time I rolled back into camp. RC had already packed up camp and I saw no lights. I had that feeling for a minute like I was the only one left until I saw some lights from the other end of our camping area. (I was the only one left at my end after Darren and RC broke camp.) RC was hanging out saying goodbyes. When I told my story, he said what I was already thinking: I needed to have a serious discussion with my bowyer about that defective bow I was toting! That night Paul broke out his guitar and entertained us with some politically correct renditions of his favorite songs. Some tequila was passed around and our smaller group of six had a good time. I bailed and went to bed early compared to the others. At least it was a warmer night, somewhere in the 26 degree range.
The next morning I was up early. I wanted to get back to the same general area to see if I could find morning pigs again. I packed up my stuff and noticed my sleeping bag was only rated for 25 degrees. I thought it was warmer than that, but it sure explained my comfort level. I flipped my fly off to let some of the condensation dry off, but it immediately turned to ice. At one point, the stuff in my pocket hit the panic button on the key fob and the alarm went off for the whole camp to hear. No one seemed to stir. So about 15 minutes later, I felt an adequate snooze period had elapse and set it off again leaning against the bumper loading the car. That got 'em up....
I said my goodbyes and headed back to the woods and swamp for one last try at pigs. I took up the blood trail one more time just because, searched a little more in the general direction and then started covering some ground. I quickly became hot, it was supposed to rocket up to the upper 50's finally. I hadn't eaten a real breakfast and reached into my pack to grab a cliff bar when I realized my pack was still in the car. I just wasn't together on this hunt, was I? I crossed the road at the train tracks and hid a bunch of my layers in the brush to pick up later. Across the road I had a great walk and a lot of shooting at ant hills and the like. My shooting improved some and my confidence was building. But all for not. The only thing I would have been able to shoot at the rest of that day was a bunch of noisy birds. They seemed to be everywhere. By the time I made a giant loop back towards the car, I was in a t-shirt.
I was back at the car for some much needed food, picked up my clothes, and was heading home by 1245. It had been a good trip: I had seen a lot of new territory and really gotten into pigs. I had had my chances, even if I didn't manage to capitalize. The unrecovered pig will probably haunt me for awhile, but if nothing else it's good motivation to keep practicing regularly for next year. And I love my new bow – it just needs a better archer!
Great story, Dave! Too bad you couldn't bring home the bacon.
I miss not being there, but have been chowing down on the filet mignon I bought for the trip. I would have had comfy nights with the Timberline and lanterns, and the Buddy tent heater.
Fortunate thing that the ice and snow came after you left, eh?
