Just wondering; we have a late spring here in S/E Wi., and the morels are usually up by Mothers Day, but nothing so far.
Finding some here in Ohio
Found enough to invite friends over for dinner last week!
We found a measly TWO then the next day the temps dropped, had a cold cold rain and then it snowed!!! Hoping still to be able to get enough for a meal later this week.
About 900 here but were done looking and here's a few picks.

Tracy
Tracy - looks like you folks had a good crop in KS.
It was a little too dry here in NY, then last week we finally got some rain over a couple of days. They started popping, but they are few and far in between. I found a bunch this past weekend, but it sure is a down year. Had fresh eggs, ramps and morels yesterday morning.
About 900...sheesh. That's a pile!
I have been out three times (NE Missouri)- first definitely too early, no luck; second, seemed perfect, no luck; last time, found two big ones...hoping to get out again and find the other 898 soon.
pretty much done in northwest Arkansas.
just took a walk with the dogs and found a bunch in the back yard!

Wow Tracy, can say with certainty, that I've never seen that big of score. Impressive. Was hopeful earlier last week when I found a couple in the yard and was hoping for a warm rain, but the weather went cold.
10 tonight. Only 890 more to go.
It isn't bad enough that you have all those big bucks in Kansas now this. :readit:
I have found a few pounds. I am on a tractor mowing sides of roads for work, so I get to look a lot!! Shawn
Hold onto those morels fellas, Im going carping tomorrow and as I don eat carp Id be glad to trade you some filets for shrooms :saywhat: .
We need a how to find them thread so everyone can share their secretes. I think Tracy can start off. :readit: [/QB][/QUOTE]
No tricks, just some good spots a couple bow hunting sons that love to find them to. I'm recovering from three brain surgery's so I only got out twice but found a couple hundred They found the rest.
Lots of rain this spring and we started finding them the first real warm up in and around the creek bottoms. It really cooled off but didn't slow them down much once they started going.
We like to check around the old dead elm trees and we did find some there but this year we found most in a new spot in the sycamore trees with a few dead elms around. We do take all the little pieces left over on the cutting boards and counter and spread them back around the areas we found them each year.

I gave a pound of morels to a guy in a bar and he bought me a drink. But all of a sudden he got up and left. Now I know why. He stole em! :dunno:
doubleleo;
Damn thief!!I will buy you a bunch of drinks for a pound of morels!
I gave 14 to a shooting friend and 6 to another shooter. Can not bring myself to eat them--at least they did not go to waste. They grow under the pines at the edge of my yard and have always see them after they start to rot- but caught them in time this year. Roy
Still have not found any here!
Where is a good place to look for them?Would like to find some but don,t know where to start.

I usually look around old dead trees and old apple trees are a good spot. I have seen them just pop up in paths and spots in the woods without much rim or reason, but I think there are probably some things others can share to help. I have found large patches in the past, but none for a long time like that so I figure I am not in the hot spots.
What weather conditions are best for searching? Temps day and night? Time after a rain?
What sun exposure amount? Hill side orientations, low lands, partial sun?
I have wondered how often to look and if I should let them grow a few days when I find them for them to get larger. I have heard they can grow over night and only get just so big depended on the mushroom, but I am not sure. They can pop up over night and dry up fast if it is dry and hot. I just pick them when I find them, but could wait a day or so if they will get larger.
found a small pretty dried up patch today.
I havnt found a lot of em this year, but I did stumble onto a patch of large yellows last week while chasing some turkey, unfortunately they were gettin pretty dry. This one was the largest in the patch...

Wow that is a trophy. I have not had any real dry ones, but can't you soak the drier ones in water for a day and hydrate them?
Yes, soaking them in some salt water seems to bring them back to life, as well as drive out the bugs living in the pores.
They can also fall apart and become a mess but the all taste the same. :bigsmyl:
