So, how many of you out there are still after their first ever (deer) besides myself? I am so hoping that this will be my year! 'Course, I was hoping that all the other years too!! :biglaugh:
-
Only small game taken. Blacktail have been ensuring me a steady diet of tag soup.
-
I'm with you. Sometimes I wish I lived in whitetail country!
-
You ever hunt grey diggers/ground squirrels? Plenty to be found in your neck of the woods, just have to knock on some farmers doors to get permission. Once you find the right place, you will get lots of shot opps. Use broadheads though, they are some tough SOB's! Getting your first kill will come, it "only" took me 11 years!
-
it will come, finally got a grouse with stick bow last elk season then managed to tag a whitetail doe with 2 days left in the season, hopefully the elk will come this year!
-
I have been blessed with being able to take a few deer using traditional equipment. No major trophies but venison none the less. Now the turkey is another story. This critter has been my nemesis. I've only been able to take one shot with a clean miss. I have, however, been able to call in other hunters with great consistency...
-
Took one small buck with my compound and made the switch to trad about a year ago. I have missed a doe, a jake, and shot through the brisket of ram (he survived). Besides the minor setbacks I am really enjoying myself.
-
Started hunting trad last year during gun season with no luck, had a small buck about 30 yards from me but was not comfortable with the shot. This year is going to be strictly traditional only! So who knows I may get my first this year
-
This was my my first year hunting with traditional equipment. I sat in the stand or blind for a little over 80 hours this past season and never got to draw my bow on a deer or turkey. I learned a lot though, and I'm optimistic that this season will be more productive.
-
never shot a deer with a trad bow yet .... half dozen or so with teh compound and 1 with a rile ...
-
Still after my first hog :biglaugh: I have been close 3 times with 2 miscalculations under my belt
-
I have taken numerous animals with compounds. Converted to trad only and have drawn no blood yet. Just have not spent the time in the wood like I use to because of domestic difficulties. That will.change this September!!!

I remember my first deer with a stick bow. It was a small three point blacktail and the trad police did not exist in the day. Most people shot at what they thought they could hit. Well anyway I shot at this little buck and he looked at the arrow. It hid him just above the eye and he went down so fast I did not even see him fall. One second he was there and the next not. It was real high grass and all of a sudden I see this arrow standing straight up fletch showing above the grass. Then it started quivering.
In those days with my family and my wages., 2.50 per hour meat was a big deal. From that point on we had elk and deer in the freezer every year/. I could not afford to miss but miss I did so my version of being a good hunter was to just hunt hard until I killed an animal. I have to say it was a lot of hard work but persistence pays off.
God bless you all, Steve
-
I started bowhunting last fall, deer and hogs, no kills yet. Gonna hunt hogs and squirrels year round. I've heard animals killed in the hot summer have too many bugs, we'll see.
-
Regrettably, yes. I'm still looking for my first major trad kill. I've bowfished successfully (that's what got me started in trad shooting)and finally killed a grouse while elk hunting 3 years ago. As far as deer, I'm likely the main one to blame. I just don't get out there like I should. And then once duck season opens I'm pretty much done deer hunting anyway. So ..... one of these days. One of these days. :dunno:
-
Can't hit deer our pigs just too big of target. I fall all apart when I get a chance on a deer or pig. :knothead:
-
Been at it since 1968......I hope it comes soon before I'm to old to realize what I really accomplished.....LOL! I did have a shot in 1971....but missed!
-
Still looking for my first trad deer. Hopefully this will be the year.
-
This will be the year, feel confident. New lease and all looks great.
Have taken possum, armadillo, squirrel and Javi's. Yet to pull down on a deer.
-
I've shot lots of squirrels, gophers, and rabbits. Haven't taken any deer yet. In the only area I have convenient access to hunt, there aren't many deer.
-
Never had a shot on big game with my bow. But I only get four or five days during bow season due to school work, and I am in meat mode once the snow falls(rifles can be traditional if they are an old and special family heirloom, right?)
-
Wannabe1 you can come to TN any time and hunt whitetails we've got a ton of them! I don't think I would ever trade them but I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous that y'all have bears, blacktail, elk, and sheep!
-
Been at it two years and have had one VERY frustrating miss on a nice whitetail buck and two toms. PICK A SPOT!!!
This is the year - I can feel it!

Every year in the spring there are thoughts of a first ever. ;)
-
My deer target has more lives then a confused cat!
Marinating and cooking burlap stinks...
Hope this all changes in a few months.
-
Even thow iv shot lots of small game and pigs goats and fallow deer with my trad gear i am still chasing one mile stone that I thought I had achieved on the weekend as I drew up on a young samber stag only to have it jump the string man was I shattered but hell I still might get him this year I have been hunting them for 12 years and I have shot numeraus samber with the guns i have just never been Abel to harvest one with the bow

It has been so long that it feels like I haven't.
I killed a blacktail when I was stationed in California back in 1989. Hopefully, I'll make it happen this fall.
-
I am still after my first deer or turkey with trad gear...
This fall will be my 4th season trad. I don't get out as much as many folks do so I don't feel too badly.
Last fall I had my first trad shots. 3 clean misses. Two were too high and one major deflection.
I have learned a ton about hunting and love it. I feel great about this fall. I know what I need to do better and better each season
-
Still looking for my first with traditional tackle. Been at it for five years now. Seems like the majority of my time in the woods lately is just hoping to see a deer period. Always hopefull and ready.
-
I'm still looking for my first anything. God willing this will be my year. I have a new job, will have a car or a pickup soon, so now I can finally hunt often. The future looks bright.
-
Juan, good luck to you! Hope to see a success story in the future.
-
Thanks dude.
-
Still waiting for my first. Small game is all I have under my belt.
-
Guys remember if you don't shoot you cannot kill anything. Not saying to take bad shots but sometimes you have to take a chance. RonW 45 years, if you want a shot call me in Oct. I can give you a chance if ya give me 2 days. Shawn
-
I got a shot at a yearling bull elk a few years back. Albeit, it was a quick decision shot but, it was my first at big game. I'm not afraid to take a shot but, an opportunity has to present itself first! :D
-
Still waiting on mine. But I got a no fail spot this year, just like last year and the one before that........

Now that's funny right there! :biglaugh:
-
I have been at this for 6 years! I have shot at deer. I have missed every time. I want to blame it on everything and anything. I still enjoy being the woods. I still enjoy shooting. I enjoy being with friends who shoot. I know that one day I will connect. I have come very close. I can get to the right spot and see deer. Good friends have taught me how to shoot. Its been good so far. :)
Martin
-
Still working on it...a couple of close opportunities on a buck at 18yds, doe at 9 yds and 2 30lb hogs...always something that prevented an ethical shot.
-
This will be my first year taking it into the woods so we'll see.
-
I've been at it serious 4yrs I can't get close enough! I won't stop trying.
-
I have learned over many years of hunting is that some of the best things you can return home with are the memories. Yes we do venture out there to "harvest" an animal and there is disappointment when that is not accomplished but I have found that the disappointment has become less and less over time.
Some of the best gut wrenching, belly hurtin, outright crying laughs my friends and I have are caused by hunting stories we tell about each other. Mostly from trips where we return home with nothing but those stories.
Besst of luck to all who have posted here. Maybe this year will be your year.
-
Best of luck, guys! I love reading about firsts. Looking forward to hearing about your successes in the fall!

I have hunted exclusively with trad stuff for a few years. Was finely fortunate enough to take a big mature doe with my home made BBO and cedar arrows. I think the way we hunt is as fair and honorable as any thing I can think of. A few are going to get away. I reackon that's why we love it so much.
-
I'll second what Sixby and Shawn said you have to take the chances that come your way!
The opportunity dosn't come by as often as I would like, and then when they do,I have to be able to make good. This year it did not pan out I had 3 total shots at deer and had clean misses on ever one of them. Then during this spring I had 2 shots on Hogs and missed those too!
The misses are frustating but you don't quit, you keep trying you do things different to figure things out. They'll be a day when the the stand was placed right, your in it on the right day, and the deer, hog, whatever stops at the right trail, and time, and you put it all together.
Then you pull that camera out and smile from ear to ear :bigsmyl: Nothing like it!
-
I've had chances and misses! Still waiting to get my first. :D :bigsmyl:
-
Your first one always seems to take forever. Then it happens a little more often. Then over the years it get even more frequent. One thing I noticed, the more I'm out there the more I get. Sometimes I'm hunting for a week or more at a time. But I've had some great hunts. Wait till' you shoot the first one and the adrenaline kicks in. What a high. Gary
-
I'm still after my first deer; hunting Nebraska in Oct but after I chase big Mulies in the Milk River Basin in southern Alberta

I've hunted blacktails for 50 years and rather successfully. I'm not a Ron French but I do have several good bucks and lots of smaller ones and does. My best success has been in hunting food sources, Elderberry patches ect. in complete camo and face mask with a heavy cover scent such as (Skunk Screen). I have had deer that I could literally touch and never know I was there. Always hunt the wind if you stalk and move like a turtle. Take a step or two and carefully look. Usually its a tail or an ear twitch that you will catch. I have seen one deer and then made out a whole group that I didn't see.
I like to hunt the high country ridges for big bucks late in season as they will lay right on a ridge top to get away from flies and to get wind. You need to work the ridge itself though , Not up and down or they will simply pop over the other side. This kind of hunting is slow and very quiet. If you can hear any noise you made you can bet the deer are already gone.
As a longtime blacktail, elk , hunter my one great observation is that humans greatly underestimate the survival senses of these animals. I have seen elk run out of a meadow when I was back in the trees a half mile away. How they could have seen me ( I had the wind) or somehow sensed me is unfathomable.
I will tell you this, If my familys life depended on me killing a deer with a bow and arrow. I would kill a moo cow.
God bless you all, Steve
-
I have to say I still am. I hunted a lot last year and missed every time. I got a new bow recently that is lighter and that I shoot better, but recently missed a hog. I shot at a turkey and there were wet under feathers on the broadhead, but he didn't look hurt a bit as he flew off. I'm missing closer though. I seem to be having a hard time aiming at live animals,as I do pretty well on the target. I'm missing high every time! :dunno:
-
I've been at it for almost nine years and have yet to take a Trad Deer... Now don't get me wrong... The action stalking and still hunting from the ground has been great!... But "Almost" ain't gonna put cutlets on the table... ... Been lots of fun tryin'...
... mike ...
-
I've taken many deer over the years but still waiting for my first trad deer. I still haven't even been tempted to go back to wheelie bows, though. Eric.
-
I've been hunting hard for about 8 years so far and have only managed to kill a couple of carp with my recurve. I still haven't connected with ANY weapon on deer, turkey or hogs. I've shot at (and missed) several deer and turkey with compounds, recurves and longbows. I always seem to mess up, somehow! VERY frustrating at times, but I just remind myself that I learn something every time I hit the woods, and that I'm now trying accomplish this feat by (almost) the hardest possible way. I have to hunt VERY over-hunted public land (military installation that is closed for a lot of the season, which doesn't allow for much scouting), and I hunt from the ground and with a stick and string. I still enjoy seeing God's creation, in all it's glory, every time, and I know that I'm much too stubborn to EVER give up!!!! Glad to know that I'm not the only one, though. I don't believe in luck, so, God bless each and every one of ya!
-
I'm still looking for my first turkey......some day, but i'm not concerned about it.
-
I'm after my first animal with homemade equipment. Osage longbow and arrows.
-Jeremy :coffee:
-
I'm still after my first deer with traditional equipment. I'm hoping to find some more time this summer to shoot the bow. I've laid it down the last couple years due to not devoting enough time to shooting it.
-
I am after my first big game kill still weather that be deer or pig, hope this will be my year.
-
Both pig and deer have fallen, but that darn elk eludes me after 4 years of trying. ( I did have one miss last year and still kicking myself for that). This year is the year!!!!
-
I had beginners luck. I killed a spring gobbler and a nice buck, both in my second year of trad hunting. That was four years ago and I haven't killed anything since. You guys/gals who're waiting on your first harvest, hang in there! I'm so amazed at people like Wannabe1 and Ron w. Your patience and persistence is admirable. I wish you all the best of luck this year and in future years. Your commitment stick & string is a difficult endeavor, but it will make your future success all the more sweet!
-
Thanks Dennis! I could easily go rifle hunt and better my chances but, I refuse to get my first the easy way. I want it to be earned and I will stick with it 'til it happens. I'm doing some different methods this year and devoting more to it so, here's hoping.
-
Glad you're back in the saddle, Wannabe1. Good luck, sir and way to go-keeping the faith.
-
Killed 83 with a compound, but I am going to a recurve for the first time this year. Should be interesting.
