This story started about a year ago.I met Mike Davenport (Wapiti792)at Ray hammonds "Hog Heaven" along with a few other guys.I had never hunted turkey before and really wanted to kill one with my bow.We had a great time hunting hogs and turkey but not much luck.Mike offered to call for me on the last morning and missing his last hunt for a hog. This gesture did not go without notice by me after just meeting him a couple days before.Fast track to October I get a P.M. from Mike."Hey Kip want to come turkey hunting in Illinois with me in May.All you need is bring some crawfish to cook an etoufee for supper I have room and board in my man cave and blinds set out and my self as a guide. My Momma didn't raise a fool so I said heck yea.I got in about 7:00 Wednesday and David Gage (Shelton Creeker)(who I also met at Rays) was also there he has some land nearby. We shot some arrows and got aquainted and talked about hunting turkeys they both having just returned from Nebraska and both killing.Back soon

The next morning Mike and I got in a blind with him calling.A few gobbles from different areas but nothing real close after a while Mike had to go to his clinic leaving me in the blind in perfect weather but did not last long.

The turkey gods were not on my side the first day and with 3-more days of rain we got close to some birds but they did not follow our plan. My getting my first bird will have to wait again but the trip was a success.I got to meet Mike and his wife Lynette, son Seth and daughter Ava Mikes in laws and freinds Mike and Alice.I did cook Mike and family some crawfish etoufee, relaxed for a few days away from work and saw turkeys, deer, and beautiful country although a little wet.Mike just moved into his new house
Having supper

Also Mike will be coming to Louisiana to either hunt hogs or specks and reds fishing on the coast in the near future or both if we can time it right.Kip

Doesn't sound like a bad trip at all! Hanging out with friends and making new friendships is always a plus. Awesome!

Looks like the the hunt was a success even without a bird. Kip, Mike and David...three top notch fellas I would love to share a hunt camp with again some day.

A day in a blind is never wasted. Enjoyed the story Kip.
Give me a call when they come to Louisiana. I'm always up for meeting TGers.

Kip, the pleasure was all mine! We really enjoyed having you. My wife and children as well as everyone that visited us really enjoyed your culinary talent and wonderful humor!

*The master at work
Every now and then you meet folks that make you feel like you've known them forever. Having Kip here to hunt turkeys was just as much a reward for me as him...moreso because I turned out to be a terrible turkey guide and managed to stay well fed the whole trip!

*Chicken Sauce Piquante to die for
The weather stunk for us with blowing rain and temps in the 40s. That combined with our wheat being high made keeping birds on my place tough. They just don't like grown up fields. Even bushogging my food plots didn't help. We tried though and almost pulled it off thanks to David (Sheltoncreeker). He had some of the clearest fields near his place. It was a fine visit and I will kidnap Kip again if I have to...this French Cajun needs to kill a turkey. I still believe I am the man for the job :)

Kip I finsihed up the last of the crawfish etoufee last night and suffered my way through the last of the gumbo, too. For breakfast the chicken piquante ended it's run as well. My stomach is ready for some reds in the bay or piggies in the swamp as soon as we can :) Miss ya already bud...and I miss your crawfish! Same week next year with good weather and working birds.

One last thing...the weather broke today and I worked that bird from the blind you did. On the way to work I counted 4 different toms strutting in the mile to the blacktop. I won't tell you when I kill him... :p

Kip claims he's "only a mediocre cook" compared to other Ville Platians, but we know better.
-
Yes we do! I cook some of the same dishes...and now my wife's expectations are different. I had to get Kip outa there before she ran me off :biglaugh:
-
Looks like a a great trip. That food is making me hungry!
-
Looks like you had a great time, thanks for sharing your story.
:clapper: :clapper:
-
Yes Sir, that is some good food right there. My late father in-law was from Kips home town. In fact they share the same last name. Some of the best food I have ever had came from there!
Good story Kip thanks for taking us along. Now i'm hungry.
-
Man, that coonass food looks good Mike! You fellas know how to eat good. I believe I recognize that ole boy on the left side of the dinner table too!
-
Great story, Kip! Thanks!
-
Kip, you need to come hunt at our place and do your celebrity chef thing, or just fling some arrows.
Get in touch when the deer start moving in January!
-
Wow my favorite Cajun Cook and my new Turkey Hunting Buddies all in one camp! Mike ya'll need to twist Kip's arm into a run to Nebraska next spring :biglaugh:
-
Good idea Tippit. I have mentioned it and he has some business things ongoing. He didnt say no...so maybe we get him and Joe hooked up. I am hoping I can get him locked in with us. Kip would cook enough vittles to keep Joe buck purty darn happy :)
-
Sounds like ya'll had a great time & I know the food was good.
-
Pretty cool! I have the pleasure of knowing Kip and I hold him in the highest regards!
Those darn turkeys are a fickle bunch. I've never had any luck getting one in to bow range...at least not on the right side of my blind, or at the right distance, and most of all they seem to dodge my arrows! You get the point...they're tough! :)

Thanks for the kudos guys although maybe not deserved.Mike and Jeff really like that idea but was also thinking Bear Quest in June also.BUT if my plans works out at the end of the year I can maybe start doing more hunting.Kip

The man is a legend in South La!
-
Sounds like you had a good time, even though you didn't get a bird. I know your cooking is the best! Good to hear from you again.
-
Inviting Kip to cook was no way to start getting in shape for a marathon Mike! Those are extra pounds well worth carrying though.
Time well spent for all of you, no doubt about that. Turkeys take second place.
-
Great to see you Kip and it was no accident I stopped by knowing there was a little crawfish left over in Mikes fridge. Come back again next year. Your welcome anytime at my place!
