My hunting buddy made me a beautiful hickory Meare-Heath style longbow. Its 64 inches long and 58#'s @28 inches. I'd like to shoot wood arrows out of it. I need help with what spine wood arrow I should shoot. I'd like to shoot 125 grain to 145 grain heads on the arrows. Thank you for your help!
Most self bows shoot under their bow weight, but a lot can depend on the bow's design and the shooter. The only way to really know is to shoot a variety of spines and see what you and the bow like. For a 28" arrow and 25 gr point, I would start with something in the 50-55 lb range. Douglas Fir would be a good choice.
Really...?
What no pictures!!!
I agree with Fletcher, 50-55 for that weight tip should be really close. You didn't mention your draw length, but start long and cut the arrow down to get the proper reaction off the shelf. You have the perfect hunting buddy I would say! Take some pics and show us your bow. A well made self bow is hard to beat. congrats
I'll get some pics up in the morning, thanks for the help

I hunt with a pig nut hickory quite a bit. It is 64 at 26", mine shoots the same arrows as a 60 pound at 26" Hill would shoot. I cut my arrows to 26.5" bop, drawing the broadhead to my finger. I am using 50 pound spine tapered cedar arrows with 145 Grizzly broadheads out of it. My arrow shelf is 1/4" outside of center.
Great looking Bow!
Nice man.
I'd go with 50# spine and leave them a couple inches long. Bareshaft and see how they fly. If they are stiff, go with a heavier head. If they are weak, shorten 1/2" at a time until they shoot well. With that skinny handle, I bet they are spot on if you draw the full 28".
agree with others....50#, leave long...bareshaft and trim 1/2inch at time until good.
The lighter spined shafts left long but I'd trim 1/4" till you get close then trim 1/8". Reall easy to miss by going 1/2" and 1/4" cuts. You'd be surprised how much difference an 1/8" will make. Learned that lesson the hard way. I was bare shafting off the knuckle though. YMMV.
true...good point.
