Here is one of our own on his latest adventure to Africa. There has been a thread going for a little while now on the "Dark Continent" forum of Tradgang. Here is the link http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=27;t=000407;p=1

ok this has got to be one of the altime hall of fame threads/pics on a trad forum ever! Congratulations Buff, not many men left in the world with the stones to tackel an elephant with only a bent limbed bow and sharpened steel head!. SO VERY COOL MAN!
Congrats Marty!!!!!!
Congratulations!
That's AWSOME!!! :scared:  :scared: Congrats. God bless.
Awesome job, sir! Can't wait for the rest of the story.

Congrats! That is an incredible accomplishment! What was the bow setup?
Nice very nice indeed.

Bisch
Wow that is awesome :notworthy:
Well, I may be the only one with a negative comment to this hunt, but here goes. There seems to be only standing ovations with comments like: Incredible accomplishment, awesome, great hunt and so on. I certainly se no Incredible accomplishment, awesome or great about this hunt. What I see is a hunt where a weapon not adequate to do the job was allowed to be used. The result was an animal which suffered and used many hours or was it days to bleed to death.
Is this the ethical and responsible bowhunting you talk about all the time?
Just for the record, I am not against hunting.
Bue--.
According to another site it took one arrow, went 50 yds., lungs filled up and it tipped over. I guess his Bow was adequate enough.
Bue what is the source of your knowledge?
Are you implying archery eqipment is inadequate for an elephant?
If you read the hunters thread in the dangerous game section it sounded like he really did his homework in preparation for the hunt.
I read the whole story on Texas Bowhunter's forum. That elephant tok a long time to die and yes, I do not think bow and arrow is adequate to kill such a large animal cleanly. Bue--.
I just read the entire post on the TBH forum. One arrow from Buff and the elephant died 50 yards from where he shot it. Did not seem like it took a long time to die, nor does it seem that his gear was inadequate either. It was a herd situation where they were aggressive and agitated, obviously pumped with adrenalin to boot. Seems like an ethical hunt and an ethical kill. I tracked deer that my father shot with a slug that blew a saucer sized hole in its' side and that deer ran for 400 yards.
Congrats Buff on your hard earned trophy.
Bue, I read the story and did not get that impression. What I read was that the bull was down in 50 yards.

MAGNIFICENT!!!
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
Is 83#s enough for elephant? :biglaugh:
Cape Buffalo, Lion, now an Elephant! Pure Awesomeness!
LD
WOW. I always enjoy his vids. Outstanding.RC
Plenty of kenetic energy, heavy bow and heavy arrow. 50yrds and down I'd say arrow was in right spot! Well done Marty! Always someone to rain on the party. There's an elephant hugger in every bunch. I've heard it all, they are endangered, they should relocate them if too many in an area.
Bottom line is some African countries cull thousands every year. Who the heck wants thousands of these things dropped of in their neighbourhood - NOBODY. Have been there many times and witnessed the destruction caused by large numbers of elephants, I know that sport hunting is the only solution. Provides much needed $$$ and meat for hundreds with everyone that hits the sand.
Buemaker,
I think you're a little out of line here.
So where do you find all the information on Marty's hunt??
Buff, you are the man. That is an incredible accomplishment non fatal bullet hole or not.
As to Dave's assessment, he is right on. I spent some time in Kruger National Park last June...we were the first car in and you could plainly see where the elephants had been that night. They don't just pick things off the tree to eat like a giraffe...they bring the tree to the ground. Amazing animals and are one of about a dozen animals I do NOT want to hunt with my bow.
Well done marty , you've become one of the few :notworthy:
Well here goes ... one more for the negative pile I guess. With all due respect,
First let me say congratulation Marty for accomplishing what you set out to do. Getting close enough to an elephant takes real guts, .... oh and alot of money. An elephant hunt must cost as much as a nice chunk of ranchland in TX. Although I would not choose the same goal for myself, I have great respect that you achieved the goal you set.
Bue, I can appreciate where you're coming from and I do personally agree that a bow is not my first choice to use on an elephant. Personally I don't desire to hunt one. Something about it turns me away. Although I understand that the population must be kept in check, and that they provide food, I personally think that to fly around the world to shoot an elephant instead of a local just shooting one celebrates the sport of hunting. I don't believe in hunting for sport alone. That's not to say don't enjoy hunting, it is to say don't hunt only for enjoyment.
Jarrad, I disagree that Bue is out of line. We don't all have to walk in a single file line. We can express differing opinions and still all get along. I doubt many will agree with Bue, but I believe his points are based on a reasonable opinion and on his interpretation of the facts conveyed regarding the hunt. As Voltaire said, "I don't agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Great job Marty!!! Congrat!!!
Everyone is entitled to thier opinion, however, this is a traditional bowhunting web-site last time I checked.Clearly the set-up worked because the animal is dead.
That elephant fed 100+ villagers.
What exactly is gained by adding a negative comment(or two)? This is starting to sound like the other(arguing)web-site.
Well done Buff.
Hope you get some proper boots made from that hide.
No argument. Just a differing opinion. Lets not all get too worked up. All I'm saying is I hope the villagers would have eaten with or without a paying hunter to kill the animal.
And yes I agree. Elephant down, obviously the bow had what it takes. No question about that.
Again cheers to Marty nonetheless. I sure as heck wouldn't have had the guts to get near an elephant.
Sooooooooo to put that to rest, what does elephant meat taste like exactly?
Chicken, lol, sorry couldnt help it.
That is awesome!!! He needs to extend his arms out further though to make it look bigger in the picture :biglaugh:
Little Ben the villagers do not have the means to kill the elephants or the licenses. Paying hunters are what saved Elephants from Extinction in the countries that allowed it. The money spent stays in the local economy and the locals get the meat. This makes the locals keep out the poachers. Seems like a pretty good plan to me.
Come-on man.....
Well done Marty.....
Got to meet you now that I live in Texas....Mark
Congrats again, Marty.
Looking forward to the video.
Don't worry about the nay sayers. Different strokes for different folks.
Way to go!
Fantastic job. Congratulations. I'd like to see Steadman do a window decal on that.

I can see it now:
Got Elephant?
With an outline of Marty and the beast!
Awesome!

Elephant tates like the hind leg of an elk! Best done in a slow cooker. It's tough, the stuff I had and they'd stewed it for day or two. That said tough meat is way better than no meat from the local standpoint. The villagers are very happy to take the meat. I have never shot an elephant but have many friends who have. One best described the native usage of carcass as such - "the next day there was not even a wet spot where the elephant fell!"
I myself would much rather shoot an elephant in heavy cover with a bow than a gun. Either tool it is done from close range and the gunfire brings all hell loose in an instant, scary stuff. The arrow is silent and does not create tha havoc a gunshot does.
WOW!
I couldn't do it, but I'm glad there are those that can.
I don't think it's sport hunting if you can afford to feed elephant meat to those who need it.
I wish my budget allowed, but for my sport hunting, I buy a target.
I try very hard not to shoot any critter unless someone is going to enjoy the meat.
Just my two cents on hunting ethics.

Pretty cool. Congrats to you Buff.
nice job, glad you got to do this hunt
That is cool!
wow, I didn't think that was a possibility.
Way to go Buff, pay no attention to the naysayer! If I had the money and time, I would hunt everything with hair, horns, tusks and teeth, before I get to old! I am a hunter, and only limited by my finanaces!
Great job Buff, well done. It still gets to me that someone's fortune's or blessings will always seem to stir certain folks. As my Grandfather would say.... "Jealousy will breed negativity, you can count on it"

Buff has some video posted over in the Dangerous Game Forum. Ya'll should check it out!

Way to go Marty. I love your videos.
Thanks for the kind words
I will post up a bunch of pictures when I get back home in a couple of days
It was quite an adventure and everything I had dreamed of since I was a young boy
"No argument. Just a differing opinion. Lets not all get too worked up. All I'm saying is I hope the villagers would have eaten with or without a paying hunter to kill the animal."
LittleBen. You have an elephant sized hole in this arguement. Without guys like Marty coming over and spending tens of thousands of dollars for the privledge to hunt this elephant, this animal would have already been dead as he had no value other than food. The money he spent there brings huge dividends to the local economy. There is truly no down side to this hunt for the local animal population, the local people or Marty.

Your alright Buff. It is nothing like I had pictured Africa Being. Thank you for the pictures, and it appears the "Locals" thanked you for the meat you provided them. This is cool on so many differnt levels.
thanks Mike
I will no doubt never do anything as intense again unless I survive a plane crash.
It was a adventure I will never forget.
I really fell in love with the villagers.
They had nothing, I mean living in a mud hut eating what ever they caught that day but they were all happy. Everyone I met smiled at me and wished me well.
There is no food stamps or Obama phones these folks had to work hard in their fields or starve. The meat this hunt provided could well be the differance in having protien and not. I was suprised how they shared it with everyone that walked into the site. old folks, kids, lots of ladies pretty much anybody with a bucket or bag left there with some meat.
My favorite picture from the trip is the one above with the spoon.
He had most likely never seen a white guy and wondered what was wrong that messed my skin up.
He didn't care about the morals of killing a elephant or my life long dream to be there. He just wanted somebody to fetch him a bowl of Elephant stew
Well done. Congrats!
Thank you for sharing those pics! The locals look happy, happy happy at your success.
