Looking for some advice to replace my bottle
e reel.
I recently got the line wrapped around way deep inside my bottle reel...don't know how it happened, but cutting the line, we tried to take it apart.
I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but I'm not attempting this reconstruction.
Have you ever had one apart? OOOWeee..too many parts for me.
So...is there a better reel out there?
Doesn't Muzzy sell one that looks like a Zebco?
Is it better/tougher?
I lend it out quite a bit to clients and want something bombproof if there is such a thing.
Thanks...

I've got one of the Muzzy's, but haven't used it yet. Impressions of it are that it is one heavy duty spin-cast reel, but line doesn't come off as smoothly as with an AMS or open spool.
Other thing you have to remember with the spin-cast reels is to disengage the reel before you shoot.
Still no better than an AMS! Shawn
Hands down spin cast safest fastest either Zebco or Muzzy.
Irv,
Cade used a Zebco in Florida with problems. But I am not a bowfishing guru by any means.
Chad
I've only recently did my first bowfishing, and I'm proud to say, I nailed my first fish with my first shot:) I was using the old fashioned manual bow reel I borrowed from my buddy, looks like a bowl you hand wrap the line on, don't know the proper name, and it was way less bothersome than my buddy and his wife that were using the Zebco closed faced type reels. Was kind of a pain when shooting off the bank in areas with brambles, but overall it worked great and I ended up buying one when I got home from my trip. If bullet proof is what you are looking for, I think it's the ticket! Although when my wife used it, she managed to get her finger over the line and it left a pretty good mark, she still almost got the gar she was shooting at. That's my very limited experience oppinion!
Go with either the muzzy or the 808 Zebco spincast reels they are very durable no line drag and when you tie the string to the back of the arrow (as most fishing arrows are drilled) they are idiot proof and safe if you dont trip the bale you will pull the arrow right off the string when you draw.
I have both the AMS Retriever and a Zebco 808. I prefer the 808 spincast. I use braided spectra Power Pro line and it comes off as smooth as silk. I like the fact that you can reel in your fish with a spincast so it's faster than the AMS reels. Keep your drag set light and that should eliminate arrow snap-back if you forget to push the button and always use the slide attachment on the arrow that you attach your line to.
Muzzy spinner if you got 55.00 to spend. If you only have 25.00 buy the Shakespeare T120. With a few simple modifications they are a great reel .
Bretto
Bretto is correct. Muzzys then zebco then Shakespeare. If you get the Shakespeare make sure you get the Ti model.
Spinners are much safer and you have more power to fight big fish.
Thanks guys.
I think I will try the Muzzy.

zebco also makes a model 888 that you can switch which hand you reel with for about $30. I have two and they work great!
Hate to jump in with my own question, but, where would one find just the rod attachment if I already have an 888 reel and fishing arrow? I have an old recurve with the stabilizer insert below the handle and need a rod.
Here is a link to a muzzy reel seat. It is a beefed up version. There are cheaper ones but this is nice.

Both Kustom King and Three Rivers carry the reel seats also.
I prefer the Muzzy closed face. The closed face reels are much faster and easier to reel in fish with than the bottles. If you miss [hey, it happens] very quick to reel back with the closed face. Playing big fish you don't have the slip you get with the bottles.
The only advantage you have with bottles is that you don't have to remember to push the button.
I like the muzzy over the others since its designed for bow fishing. They have a stainless pick up pin inside [some have plastic] which is the weak spot on this type of reel and will break easily with any hard use. I keep a spare pick up mechanism for the reason above. If you do a lot of bow fishing- I do- you get a season or two out of these reels is all
I like to keep it simple. A Saunders shoot thru reel.
I shoot a couple of the pushbuttons and an AMS; much prefer the AMS. All the reels are a compromise and all have their pro points and place. I sure wouldn't say that a PB is safer than an AMS, tho. If I'm starting someone out, I give them the AMS and have a slide on the arrow. No chance of snapback, no button to forget or have reset when you bump the reel handle.
Beaunaro, if you want to put that basketcase AMS in a box I'll trade you my Zebco 888 for it.
I've got an old Mac's Archery shoot thru reel. Circa, late 60's early 70's. Pretty cool idea, works just fine.
forget about the slides and tie the string on the back of the arrow as they are designed and they are idiot proof as for arrow snap back.

That is foolish advice given the fact that almost all the fishing arrow manufacturers have warnings against this very thing. NO FISH IS WORTH AN INJURY OR DEATH, not one.
if you read the instructions that I gave and use the close face reel you cannot draw the bow without pulling the arrow off the string if you DONT RELEASE THE BALE, it is in your best interest to read before you speak...THERE IS NO RISK OF ARROW SNAP BACK WITH THAT METHOD.
How about if the string gets tangled after the draw? By the way I did read it.
If you are just getting into bowfishing then I would recommend the AMS setup.
Thats simple dont release the arrow!!!

I would totally agree with that.
I've seen the slow motion video where snap back accrued.
I've also talked to a couple of friends that had it happen.
In one case the arrow nock stuck in the guys head above the eye. Others were worse.
If you shoot a AMS reel a slide is a must . These reels are the most dangerous with the tie to the back of the arrow. What happens is as the arrow is drawn the string pulls out so easily that it can flip back and tie a,half hitch around the bow string.
The heavy arrow leaves then hits the end of the string and comes straight back.
With closed face reels, using a slide allows you to,shoot without pushing the button and can cause a similar problem.
I shoot the closed face and tie to the back.
It is less likely to have the string do the half hitch with these reels but it is possible. Also the reel can malfunction and tangle inside and and it is possible for the arrow to come back.
So both reels have advantages and disadvantages.
For leisurely bow fishing the AMS is fine. For fast fishing the spin cast reels are faster.
I would vote for the AMS reel. I have probably ruined at least eight zebco 808's in 3-4 years. When I have taken them apart to see what went wrong the little ceramic pins that wind the line around the spool almost always get broken off when fighting a good fish. That's why I know use the AMS even though you have to pull the fish in by hand it is a much more durable type of reel and the safest I know of.
The following is copied from the Muzzy site under the description of their reel. I was a bit surprised by both statements. Anyway, I had the same questions as the OP and am also leaning Muzzy.
****Attention: This reel is designed specifically for 200# Brownell Fast Flight line or 150# Braided Spectra Line Only. Other lines will not function properly and cause damage. **** Muzzy does not recommend the use of arrows with Safety Slides with this Reel
AMS Retriever reel for me.

Zebco and tie to the back for me! Seems idiot proof to me but like my buddy always says "you can't make the world idiot proof they keep making better idiots"
I've had a lot of buddies who after "reading" internet stuff buy and try the AMS bottle types but after a few outings they show back up with closed faced.
I think the term snap back with injury only came into play with AMS retriever with guys using 400lb line. They was using that poundage line so the squeeze grip would work better. Problem is with AMS the line comes out so freely it happens every time you lower the bow to shoot. The folks I've seen use them for carp can't reel them in or takes forever ever to retrieve after a miss. Trust me your gona miss bow fishing.
Your mileage may vary!
For those using the closed face reels. I like to set the drag half way loose. That way if the reel would trip to the retrieve state during the shot ( it can happen) the arrow will use up it's energy against the drag.
I tighten up the drag after shooting the fish.
An old Bear wind-on reel works pretty nice. I would send the thing back to the manufacturer for them to reassemble.
Cade used a Zebco, that thing worked great.
I think he shot 17 fish!Some I had for dinner(Tilapia).
Well, prior to buying a replacement reel, I read a bunch of reviews and it seems neither the AMS nor the closed face reels are foolproof. One is slow, and the fish shouldn't be fought with it...the other seems to break the internal pins when you use it a lot, but it's faster.
So Jim is probably right...just use the old style wind-on manual reels (or an old cut down liter bottle) pull the fish in by hand, then reel up the line.
Sure it's slower, but way more reliable esp when loaning out to clients.
Personally, after reading about a lot of new defective Muzzys and Zebcos, and then the broken pins...I changed my mind and reordered another AMS. I just won't use it to fight the fish. Now that I think about it, it's probably why the line ended up in the gears.
Re: slide or not...I will always use the safety slide...but that's just me.
Thanks guys for all the discussion. I learned a lot as usual.
Great input on this site! :clapper:
I shot fish for 20 years or more used the old hand wrap type. For the last 15 years I have used the AMS Retriever. I finally wore the wheels out and had to replace them after 13 years.
Bought the Muzzy Extreme last month and it lasted a whole 2 days before it quit reeling in. Found out the threads were bad on the shaft.
I just received my new AMS Pro Retriever reel.
It's got the blue bottle, a different mount, and comes with two nocks and two sliders.
It looks to be way beefier than my old white bottle reel.
I'm hoping it works as good as it looks...now just have to find some spots to wade for carp in S. WI. I don't have a boat.
Anyone willing to share some spots?
