Title: New to Trad
Post by: dougedwards on April 18, 2013, 12:01:00 PM
Hello all.

I have been shooting compounds for the last 10 years and have an interest in shooting traditional bows.  I have received some good advise but am always ready to hear new ideas. Presently I am between the Samick Sage, which has replaceable limbs and my local shop carries the SKY line of recurve bows. Also, I can get a very good purchase of a 2011 Bear Grizzly for $200 but it is 45 lbs which may be too much for me to start. I have been shooting a compound @ 60 lbs with a holding weight of 13.75 lbs.

Any suggestions on bow choices?

Doug

The Sky line of bows are great. They give a slight weight adjustment. As mention going to an event like Denton Hill where you can try a lot of different bows and find the one that fit YOU the best will greatly benifit you.

I will someone else chime in with details as to location of Denton though I am not familiar.

Welcome! If you have been shooting sixty pounds then stepping down to forty five pounds should be just about right for you and plenty enough to hunt with.

Be careful not to overbow yourself on your first bow.  Try different draw weights and see what you can really get a good, full, draw on and hold for a while.  I started on a 35# Samick Sage, it was plenty of weight for me at the time.    Welcome aboard from Texas!

Hey rbcorbitt......I am from just east of Richmond near Williamsburg in New Kent Co.

There is a local pro shop that only deals in the SKY line of traditional bows and I think that I should make a visit there and shoot some of the bows if that is allowed. The thought of a longbow appeals to me since it appears to be the most primitive looking but I can't imagine hunting out of a tree stand with one.

I really don't want to invest a large chunk of change into this at first until I am sure that I am not too old to pursue such a venture.  You know, tendonitus in my holding elbow,  bad shoulder and such and I don't think those things are going to get better as I increase the stress on them.  On the other hand I am the hard headed type who somehow feels that if somebody else is doing it then so can I.

Thanks a bunch for the warm welcome and great suggestions and advice.  I will keep a close watch on this forum to learn as much as I can about this very cool sport.

welcome shooting a variety of bows to decide what you like is a great idea but I would encourage you to go to a traditional gathering and try bows there most pro shops have very limited trad bow knowledge.  Also don't worry about about bow length and hunting out of tree stands I hunt out of trees with 70" longbows with no problems.  All things being equal longer bows are more forgiving but you should shoot a few different bows and you will find out what style and make you like best

Took my 8 yr old grandson with me to the pro shop to shoot some recurves today and ended up getting him a SKY youth model longbow....lol

I did pull a 40 and 45 lb recurve and the draw was no problem but holding it at full draw was rather shaky.  I think I am going to purchase a 30# Samick Sage just to learn to shoot with and proceed from there.

Will really be fun learning how to shoot with my grandson.
