Lots of posts re: noise when shooting 3 under, especially with bows tillered split. If I understand correctly, 3 under results in the lower limb being out of time with ipper limb.
YES - I know about raising nock pt some. Like some of you have posted, i have never managed to get a bow as quiet shooting 3 under as When shooting split.
However, I'm thinking that, if the lower limb were SLOWED down a bit it might "time" the limbs better and reduce noise. Has anyone ever tried EXTRA silencers in the lower limb and/or positioning the silencers (on bottom vs. top) so they do slow the lower limb more than the top???? Am I analyzing correctly? Even if it wouldn't work? Thx in advance for posts

Scilencer position does help if your bow is loud I have done that. I have not done the other things you mentioned though
Thx. Hoping to get a bit of input before I go test drive something that Donnie could educate me on and save some working

I figure things can be done to move in the direction you are talking about. I may give it a try if I settled on 3under. I do know that at times a tip protector has changed the sound of my bow.
Trying to figure this out, Matt. Doesn't 3 under cause the lower limb to bend more than the upper limb relative to split? Isn't that why they put less tiller on bows made for 3 under, to strengthen the lower limb relative to the upper limb? If the lower limb is bent more, wouldn't it take it longer to recover, so wouldn't you want to make it faster than the upper limb if you wanted them to recover at the same time? Or is my thinking backwards?

Yup, need a stronger upper limb. I've not played with and extreme amount for 3 under, but it would be worth playing with.
They are actually weakening the lower limb relative to a split tillered bow McDave. The extra finger on the string is supposed to stiffen the lower limb up making it pull harder like it did for a split shooter. All this hubbub is of course due to the fact that the shelf is above the center of the bow. I wonder if anyone has ever made the bow center the top of the shelf instead of the throat of the grip?
I find that if someone heels their hand on the bowgrip a lot, then you have to think about that when tillering as much or moreso than if they shoot split vs. 3 under. Heeling the bow significantly would put extra force on the lower limb also as long as the center is at the throat of the grip. I had a conversation once with a pretty smart guy who said that if you heel the bow really hard, you could make the center below the throat and tiller even.

Thx for all input. Dave from sp fort -- your comments seem to suggest MORE silencers on bottom correct???
And or less on top
Best

This advice usually seems to fall on deaf ears...I will give it anyway...try shooting two fingers under bringing things just a bit closer to split finger...I do this all the time with bows up to 63 pounds draw weight and it works for me

Matt, I dont know if that would really help unless your string silencers were fairly heavy. From what I have done and used in the past for string silencers, you are talking very minimal affects on limb speed. In other words, I just dont think they would have any real affect on limb timing, not like finger position or tillering. I know I was told to move the lower silencers up the string to the 1/3 position and the upper silencer to the 1/4 position of the string to help the most.
I agree with Damascus Dave about the 2 under style. Most I would bet basically just use the third finger as a helper, not a primary holder when pulling the bow back. I know myself that I drag my third finger tip on the string and not a ton of weight is on it. I have even thought about making a tab for 2 under.

I shoot 3 under and use this method for string silencer placement. Works pretty good. Still not as silent as when shooting split.
Also, I noticed that you bow is probably much quieter than you think. A friend of mine shot my bow 3 under, and I could hardly hear a thing (as opposed to the loud 'thwack' i heard each time I took a shot). So I videotaped myself shooting. In the video, my shots were almost silent. Being that close to the string and actually holding the bow really amplifies the sounds. But once you get a few feet away, they dissipate alot.

I agree with that a lot. I think I hear a lot of noise all the time, but my buddy standing 4 ft away says it is very quiet when I shoot. I know it is still a lot quieter than when I shot compound back in the day. Those things have to be fast bc of the racket.

There was a thread on here recently about noise and 3 under. Kirkl from Bigfoot came up with the best explanation I have heard to date and he even provided a drawing indicating how 3 under creates an extra bit of slack in the string on release.
As far as the limb timing thing is concerned that's what the tillering for 3 under is meant to accomplish.

x2...
Dwyer made a prototype with the center being the shelf, I think he shoots 3 U. I watched him shoot it but hadn't started making lam bows yet so I didn't take a lot of the details in. It looked a little different but I think it was quiet. It was a longbow.
I wonder if a limbsaver on only one limb would help?

Dave Dwyer of Dwyer longbows?
