How many of you take items to make coffee on your hunts. IE: coffee pot, ground coffee? And if anyone uses a coffee press, I would love to know how you use it and what items you carry to do so?
I mostly use the blue enamel perk type using coffee grounds. Just let it sit next to the fire and do its thing . My wife did buy a French press but we haven't used it yet , you still have to heat up the water and I would rather it just be there in the perk when I feel like a cup and if i use river or stream water by the time i get to it anything that was living in it isnt anymore but that just my 2 cents
not quite on target, but these babies are great in your pack on all day sits (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8070888465_5065715aae.jpg)
A french press works great! Put in the grounds....pour hot water, let stand bout 10 min, then push the plunger down, and enjoy.......MMMMM COFFEE!
Not really gourmet....but Folgers coffee bags are not to bad. Just like a tea bag but with coffee!!
Look at the single cup coffee filter holders by Melitta. Many stores have them now and they are only about $4.00. Uses normal ground coffee. http://www.amazon.com/Melitta-Ready-Single-Coffee-Brewer/dp/B0014CVEH6
I have just about every coffee making process including two french presses. The problem with a french press while out hunting is all the water you need to clean it when you done. Also, the coffee gets cold quickly, and most of the presses are glass. I have one of the plastic variety but the spout filter clogs all the time. PITA
My hunting buddy and I each carry coffee, enamel perk pot and propane or similar stove in our trucks. Break time very often means coffe time on the tail gate.

If I am tent camping from a base camp (wall tent), I have a coffee press.
If I am backpacking I take the "Starbucks Via" instant coffee it is the best non brewed coffee I have tried. Light weight and all you need is a cup and hot water.
Get the Starbucks ones you just poor into hot waterand stir ... Works great for short camp trips.
One cup at a time............triangular paper filter and holder. I buy whole beans on line and roast them at my office or at home one pound at a time. The coffee that comes along for hunts is always pretty fresh ground.

X2, and I use a Jet Boil to heat the water; about 90 seconds and you have steaming hot water.
A good old coffee pot and when camping I make a pot before I crawl in the bag, fill up the thermos and in the am I got hot coffee as soon as I crawl out of the bag. :coffee:
All of the above..... including a thermos on my ATV when i head up the mountain.. :goldtooth:
Try a Frieling stainless steel insulated French press. You can also use it as an insulated pitcher in the bigger sizes or cup in the smaller sizes.

If I don't use an instant coffee I use the Melitta filter holders that Pete McM mentioned, they are lightweight plastic, weigh almost nothing, and no clean up other than throwing the used filter with grounds into the fire. You can get larger filter holders too for making more coffee at one pour.

For backpack hunting:
The Starbucks Vias are the best instant coffee going. The Folgers bags are a close second.
For camper/base camping:
A good old percolator is hard to beat.
Instant for me. I use Nescafe Clasico. I always have hot water in my Stanley thermos. Pour some water, throw in some instant coffee and your good to go. I drink the stuff everyday, not just while hunting/camping
I must confess to being somewhat of a coffee addict and in the last few hunting trips got turned on to the French Press. Awesome couple of cups of coffee within 2 minutes of boiling water.
I hunt public land near my home mostly and just bring a thermos full of my favorite dark roast on morning sits. Up until last year I had NEVER brought coffee with me on a hunt. I tried it once and it was glorious.
There is something about watching the sun come up with your bow in your lap and a cup of coffee in the other.
Me too. I just hate it when I get confused and wind up with the bow in my hand and the coffee in my lap.
Starbucks Via for me and I even bring along my personal Starbucks Barista to make it for me!

The most portable setup for me is an Aeropress with reusable metal filter from Able Brewing. I also roast my own beans and like to grind right before I brew so I use a 1950's KYM hand grinder. If I have to go ultralight I just pregrind the coffee.
If I am not camping, I simply make coffee at home and have a couple of cups before leaving the house. If I am at deer camp though, we have an electric drip style coffee maker.
Starbucks via if backpacking, minimal trash, nothing extra to carry besides the coffee and no dishes to do.
If in a wall tent usually a percolator, but the french press makes an appearance sometimes.
Starbucks Via here also!
Usually make it after sun's up and nothing's been moving for a while. Unless it's cold out, then I make it before heading out and put it in the muff for nice warm hands and sipping while the sun rises.
Coffee for as long as a Nissan Thermos will hold it warm (24 hrs +/-). If I have to pack it in I brew gunpowder tea. Caffeine of a lesser god.

I've found the jetboil with coffee press pretty handy.
in elk camp it's cowboy coffee...water + grounds and boil for a few...perfect mud every time.
I grew up making "Cowboy" coffee for my father-a tablespoon for each cup and 1 for the pot. I'm 61-I have never finished a cup of coffee-don't like the smell or the taste!!
I just take some instant, yuppy, sweetened, flavored stuff in powder form you mix into hot water. What can I say, I'm a lazy camp coffee guy(and I kinda like that flavored yuppy stuff). Now the important part of hunting camp breakfast is the bacon........I am a bacon snob......maple, double smoked, rind on, and have to slice it yourself.......I'm getting hungry! :D

Those years I lived in MT and hunted with a few boys who outfitted, they would do what Durp said...then throw a raw egg in on top to settled the grounds. pour gently and "enjoy". don't eat the egg!
I love my coffee, and still do it old style while in camp, I simply boil the whole coffee beans in an old blue speckle ware coffee pot, with a strainer in the pour spout. No grainy mess , quick simple and easy and OOOOHHHHH so good!
It's not a hunt without coffee. When I'm out for more than a day I take a regular perculator coffee pot. When it's a day hunt one possibly two Stanley thermous's of coffee! :goldtooth:
Starbucks via when weight is a concern.
Instant for me folgers.
I got busted by my wife pouring instant in my Camelbak one morning. She weighed the thing, proclaimed it greater than a cup of coffee and called my cardiologist. He swore a blue streak over the phone at me.
Still do it, and I'm still here. Since I'm fortunate enough to hunt my yard (as it's more than big enough and full of wildlife) I take what's in the pot, don't care if it's hot or cold-hot coffee just gives me away in the woods. Though hot coffee in a Camelbak was really really nice (until it melted through.)
+5 for the Starbucks Via's. I use quite a few through hunting season. Backpacking trips where I'm closer to water and weight is less of an issue, I take a Jet-boil with the coffee press in it and only coffee that wasn't roasted in an air bed roaster and ran through the finest of burr grinders made by Gaggia (with wipes of course)
Unless Brad busts me :)
From what I can tell I got really lucky.
In 1971 or 1972 I was at my high school's football game the night before a major cross-country race (my sport). I was cold so I picked up a half-cup of black coffee at the concession stand. It was the first I ever tasted and it was HORRIBLE!
I haven't even had a sip since. I've watched hunting buddies over the years practically go crazy in the morning, especially in a strange house or camp looking for coffee.
French press. I can carry one pot to do all my cooking/boil water, and I pack the coffee in small ziplocks between the lid and mesh screen. I did use a stainless steel, but I decided to buy a "shatterproof" plastic one and it's a lot tougher than I imagined.
Thom
I use a keurig lol
I get the pot ready before going to bed then when the alarm rings I turn on the fire and hit the snuzz button twice and the coffee is ready.
Sounds like a lot of us like our coffee? :archer2:
Selfbows, wood arrows, mountains, the solitude of a wilderness are about my favorite things in life; Coffee makes them all better.
Below is a link to how they all come together.

Dang Walt! Reading your 'coffee' story makes me thirsty for more. ;)
When I whitetail hunt: I prefer a 12 cup Cuisinart set to 'bold', and a stoneware mug. I leave the mug on the counter when I head out the door to my treestand.
Everywhere I camp: It's gonna be Starbucks Via. I've been using it since it was introduced, and I haven't been able to better it...at least enough to be worth the additional effort. I love the ambiance of instant coffee in a steaming lexan cup... :)
Hi!
In terms of coffee, to me its all about enjoyment - so instant coffee usually dont work for me.
For a cup or two, the ortlieb filter holder does the trick:

Just need hot water and you get all the works with nice aroma.

At my trailer in the woods a French press, but elk hunting in CO so far just Folgers baggies. Not the best, but the baggies meet the minimum stds for coffee and are handy. Usually I don't have much time in the morning. Instant oatmeal and coffee.
I REALLY like coffee first thing in the morning - after that I drink tea. So, for me many times when lightweight camping I stick with tea. Since I do drink coffee - if I don't get any caffeine, I get the dreaded headache...
I have not tried the coffee singles. They sound interesting. I do use a french press sometimes when camping but normally I use my espresso maker. This is what I use every morning at home for my coffee and when camping: http://www.amazon.com/Primula-Aluminum-Stovetop-Espresso-Coffee/dp/B001J1L59E/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1366208365&sr=8-15&keywords=espresso+maker
Last year when elk hunting in Idaho we had such a lightweight spike camp and a no-burn order that we just chewed on coffee beans for our morning "fix". :scared:
Since trying the Starbucks Via, I cannot do the baggy thing any more. The Via is better tasting and less left over mess--just a small empty sleeve. A couple of years ago on a similar thread, someone here mentioned roasting their own beans and buying their supplies from Sweet Maria's Coffee Co. on line. I would love to thank the guy who put me onto that! Best coffee I have ever had! Single grower origin coffee beans from about any country that grows coffee. When you roast your own you know it is fresh and not made from tons of mixed origin beans of various varities just tossed together in the roaster! Reasonable prices and excellent service. :coffee:
I lovvvve coffee before a hunt...but ONLY if i have paper lol.

Boy that's a no sh)%%er, unless you have paper :bigsmyl:
I started taking a little brew kit that consists of a small Optimu Backpacking pot with lid, alcohol stove, wind screen made out of flashing, and a small plastic cup, small spork, 2 oz bottle of alcohol. Everything nests inside itself and fits in a mesh bag. Size 4"x 5"about 16oz. I can post pic but if you PM me I can send photos.
Also look into a Stanley Cook Kit. This kit would be great with an alcohol stove.
I like cowboy coffee when I camp it's done faster than percolated
One elk trip in Oregon, we went through a drive through coffee place before heading to camp. The sweet girl at the place hooked us up with some chocolate covered coffee beans. Ate them like candy and didnt sleep for days. Now when I can find them I will carry for that emergency no-dose fix.
