I bought a little long bow off the classifieds a while back and just recently really started trying to get it dialed in. The bow is a 60" Vortex. I have the brace height at 7.5 " and it smacks my arm really bad. I'm grouping really well with it and getting good arrow flight. My question is if a bow is short like that and my draw is longer about 30.5 can I get this bow to stop doing this by going with a longer brace height?
If you are slapping your arm at 7.5" you might want to consider rotating your elbow and wrist a bit more.... try canting the bow and opening your stance up first and see if this helps. if this helps try rotating your hand slightly on your grip before putting pressure on it, and try shooting with an open hand. rather than wrapping your fingers all the way around the back of the riser, try drawing with an open hand, and then just relax the finger tips until they lie gently on the back of the riser..... this should help you out..... The brace is most likely not the problem....Kirk
I had the same problem when I first started shooting my Kanati. I realized it needed to be shot like a recurve instead of a closed, firm grip. Try placing the grip's throat closer to your thumb joint.
I always think of brace height adjustments in the context of eliminating hand shock. Start with a low brace height and gradually increase it unti the hand shock is gone or is as low as you can get it.
Try this to avoid slapping your arm. Stick your bow arm straight out to the side with the palm down. Then turn your palm only at the wrist to the position to hold the bow. That should get your forearm out of the way.
Thanks for the advice guys. I found some comments like these on the shooting form posts also. Thanks again.
Kirk has it, I have huge forearms and big hands(size 17 ring) and I need to relax my hand and also bend my bow arm a bit making my fore-arm roll out and away. Shawn
