What a Morning!!!! Hard to describe in words the Blessings that God continues to throw this way.
I picked my Grandson up yesterday and after school we were basketball stars on a dirt court..at least he was I ran out of legs purty quick but it was fun.We then road to the river and throwed rocks in it for a while then back home for supper and homework and a good nights rest.
I took him to school this Morning and got back home about 8:00. Shut the door on the truck and heard a Turkey Gobble before I could walk in the House.
I quickly grabbed my bow and hunting packs and picked a mouth call from of the desk and headed out the door. I stood and listened a minute at the bird. The crows had him fired up and he would Gobble near every breath.Probably 300 yards away in the swamp.
Killing a bird without a blind with a stickbow is tuff. I`ve done it but it was more luck everytime than anything so I began to think. I have a blind set on an Island where I killed the first bird of the year but from where it was it was to far maybe for the bird to hear me call.
I walked to the woods road than runs along the swamp and called. The bird hammered and I got the idea that I could call him half way to the blind then go get in it and call him the rest of the way...crazy ain`t it. IT WORKED!!!
After I called a bit and he came about 100 yards closer I headed for the blind. Stopped half way and called some more. He was hot and gobbling constant . I got in the blind after stabbing my old Faithful Decoy up. I yelped a few times and he Gobbled again maybe 150 yards away.
I held off a bit hoping the silent treatment would bring him on a bit. After maybe 10 minutes I yelped again and he Gobbled along with two birds that were past him and one way behind me....and one at about 60 yards that I could see after he took a few steps. Gods Country
The bird I could see was walking across in front of me from left to right. He would walk a bit them strut a second or two then walk some more. He looked like he was gonna go by so I yelped real soft and he turned at an angle headed my way. The second he saw the deek he blew up and walked almost a straight line to it. He would quiver and shake with a beautiful head glowing in the sun. I had to get out of my chair and turn to shoot from another window I had open as he came by. He was so close to the blind I had to shoot him a little higher than I have been shooting at Turkeys. I locked down on his wingbut and hit the Shining feather I was looking at. He ran a loop back the way he came for maybe thirty yards. I lost him when he went behind some palmettos but he did not come out the other side....
I sat for a second and was shaking bad. Worse than from any buck I`ve ever killed.I pulled out my phone and sent Brother Al and Brother John a text. We text each other play by play of our hunts sometime and I needed some time to calm down. I got out of the blind and nocked an arrow it had been maybe 2-3 minutes. When I went around the palmettos the bird tried to run a bit and went in some brush then did a hard wing flap, came out of the brush and fell dead before I could get around to the other side and shoot him again. I walked up to the bird and realized I was still hopeless as far as calming down goes.
I took a pic of him where he was at..

I put the quiver on my bow last night and loaded it up with Woodsmans as the plan was to go over to Flat Tub WMA today for some Turkey/Pig hunting. Mostly hunting pork. I been shooting a little lighter arrow than usual and a Woodsman gets it done. I usually shoot Turkeys with Simmons or Snuffers. The Woodsman worked today on this Bird.
Here is a picture of the blind and decoy. The Bird was standing beside the deek when I shot at a long shot of...4 yards. Low windows are a must.

He was a Jake but no matter I`m tickled to get him. The whole hunt from hearing a Turkey Gobble from the yard to putting my hands on this one was maybe 30 minutes. This is not the bird that was Gobbling at the start...maybe he will be happy again tomorrow. When I was cleaning my Bird in the yard I could still hear a gobble or two from the swamp. They were on the other side of the Island close to another big ridge I can drive to and maybe put my new blind up for a hunt tomorrow or maybe next week. Gods Country...did I say that already? Thank You Lord.RC
