Title: broadhead coming unscrewed
Post by: BRONZ on April 07, 2013, 07:33:00 PM
I have used this particular arrow to practice with and now the insert allows the head to come loose.  I have redressed it with new feathers to hold a broadhead, but it comes loose with just walking!  Now, these inserts are not hot-melt glued in, so changing the insert is out of the question.

What can I use to keep the broadhead from coming unscrewed?  Thought about finger nail finish?

Bowstring wax on the threads works for me.

I second the loc-tite. Teflon tape works well too.

I've always used teflon tape.

I have tried string wax and it still rattles loose sometimes. I am going to try some teflon tape here soon.

Just use a bit of hot melt on the threads - won't come loose until you reheat it.  I use it on all my target tips and broadheads.  Never have a problem with unscrewing anymore.

teflon tape, string wax, small dab of glue all work well

I pull the blue liners out of Coke bottle caps and trim to make a gasket. Cut a small hole first, screw it on under your broad head and trim with a sharp knife against the arrow.  Keeps it tight and allows you to rotate your broad head out of your vision.

Use loc tight. But looking long term , are you shooting left wing fletch? Left wing will tend to unscrew a head. Right wing will tend to tighten. They may still work loose some but not as often .

It's either a #10 or #12 lock washer. They're only a few grains. I used them back in the 80s and have a few lying around but can't remember the exact size. I'm thinking 312 is likely it.

I put beeswax on the threads.

If you use left helical fletching, put some threadlocker on your threads, otherwise it shouldn't happen.

"I have redressed it with new feathers to hold a broadhead..."  BRONZ

I do not understand this sentence?  Do you mean you have refletched to RW so the arrow spins into the threads thereby tightening it upon the shot?  Use Blue Lock-Tite as described above.

A dot of clear nail polish on the threads works well.

After almost two years of shooting this arrow during practice (which occurs frequently), the feathers were worn, so I stripped the crest and feathers and put new ones on.  Now that she's had a make-over, I decided to put a broadhead on her and let her ride in my quiver.
BTW, all my feathers are RW.

1: use the plastic broadhead adapter ring, they compress a bit.

locktite teflon tape of wax all work. Teflon is probably easiest and best and you probably have it in your basement from that one tiem you tried to fix the sink ...

I've used a small rubber o-ring & blue loc-tite for years with good results from both. Caution go light w/ the loc-tite. Less is more.

Not sure how the insert is adhered- but even without hot melt you can remove many inserts with heat and the drill bit impact method.

Kayro light corn syrup. Use it on nocks and heads. it gets really tacky when it dries, but is not impossible to break free if you need to.

I've used a touch of hot glue on the threads
Screwed it in as it was "gummy" not thin liquid.
Seemed to work better than wax and didn't lock in as tight as loctite.
