Title: "The Old Bowhunter"
Post by: Wannabe1 on April 07, 2013, 05:57:00 PM
"The Old Bowhunter"

My friends say I've gotten older
But the seasons have been lots of fun
And now I set a tree stand
Instead of the woods I used to run

The poundage of my bow
Has dropped down from year to year
Yet, I'm up before the dawn
Each time hunting seasons here

The bones may ache a little more
But I'll suffer through the pain
For when I'm alone in the silent wood
There's knowledge still to gain

Yes, the walk to the stand takes longer
But, I never was one to be in a hurry
And my eyes are sharp like the eagle
Though my future now seems blurry

You say my back has taken on a bend
That may somewhat look like my bow
I'll tell you my mind has never been sharper
This much I'll have you know

Feel sorry not for me my friends
My life really could have been much worse
The kids could have retired me to an old folks home
To be mollycoddled by a nurse

So, in spite of the advancing years
I'll continue to journey by and by
And with my trusty bow in my hand
My gaze to settle on the land
In my stand, I wish to die....TW

OLDER BROTHER, YOU ARE AWESOME.

I'm 56 years old and still applying for goat and two species of sheep in three western states because I would rather die in the Alpine than live in a retirement home. I Shoot a 55 and two different 58 pounders as many as five days a week and can shoot my 63#'r if need be. Point is, in the immortal words of Toby Keith...

I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was!

I wrote that poem when thinking of a friend I know. I'm by no means old at only 44.   :biglaugh:  I do hope to still be getting at it though as the years go by.

Yep, a lot of us can imagine ourselves in that picture. However, as bad as getting old can sometimes be, I am not yet ready for the alternative.
