I have been useing 100 grain inserts ( I want to keep useing the 175vpa heads I have) ,but found I got better bare shaft flight with 50 grain inserts. I would need to buy several new 50 grain inserts $16 a dz or I could use the insert that came with the shafts(goldtip 11 grain) and just add 50 grain add a weights from gold tip for half the price. Does any one have experance with the add a weights? (they come in 10,20, & 50 grain) Gold Tip Weight System Goldtip trad 3555 291/4 recurve 50@28
I found with the add a weight it did not distribute the weight as far forward in the shaft and effected flight, but I did not try the 50 grain ones, only the 20 and the 10s to get 50 grains. I dare say you could cut the 100s down to get 50 grains and still have enough threadsto screw your points in, cut from the back of course. Shawn
Shawn is right.You will be surprised how much difference there is in weight behind the insert and weight in or in front of the insert and the farther back you go with the weight,the less affect it has,compared to say,point weight.
I was thinking he may be incorrect about cutting a 100 but looking at one,alongside a screw in point,it does look like you could get close.
If that isn't an option,I would spend the money for the 50's.it is a cheap price to pay to get arrows to shoot right and keep your existing heads.Chances are,after much trial and error,you will have to buy them anyway.I think it will save you a lot of headaches.
Using standard GT inserts, I found the GT weight adapters very, very effective. However, you need a special wrench to screw them in the insert. That is, when you want to screw the weights in an insert already glued in the shaft.
I've used weights. I take a 8x32 screw and cut and weigh them to get the desired weight and then screw them in with blue lock tight.
I have also found the farther you put the weight out front the more of a difference it makes. I also found not much difference between 100 and 50 gr. inserts. I see some, but not much more than a point change of 25 gr. I love the 175 VPA, but the 200 is great also. I just don't like field points over 175 so I also try and get my arrows to tune with a 175 point unless it is a hunting and stumping arrow only and not something i would shoot 3D with.
The screw in, behind the aluminum insert, weights are at their best when you are trying to increase the weight of your arrow with minimal effect on your arrow's spine. Or, when you want to bend your shaft just a skid mark more.
I use the weights and really like them.
I have used them and thought they worked well.Just needed to Loctite the threads is all. The tuning is a bit different than a heavy brass insert of the same total weight however.
Lately I have been experimenting with brass rod epoxied in place behind a regular weight insert. So far results have been good.
I go to the local hardware store and buy 2" brass screws. A little blue loc-tite on the threads and I'm good to go. For tuning they are easy to cut with a pair of side cutters and only cost 15 cents a piece.
I buy the 100 gr insterts and cut them down.
My advice is to go with what flies better. You will lose a lot more energy by having a heavy arrow fishtail. A straight arrow will keep its momentum going in the right direction. I like heavy arrows but not at the expense of good arrow flight.
I used them for my compound arrow because I couldnt get broadheads to top flying left of field points. Added 2 50 gr weights to the inserts and it did the job great
