Title: Beginners Journey - Draw length question......
Post by: PZee on April 03, 2013, 04:06:00 PM
Hi All,

I have a draw length question. I originally measured at 28" draw. However after some practice it seems my draw length
has grown to 30". I was never over bowed. Is this possible?

Thanks

Pete

I am very much a beginner to archery. I have been shooting for a few years now, however due to budget constraints, I have taken it slowly. Most of my equipment is home made and my whole walk so far has been taken from your experiences on Tradgang.

I have now set a goal. To take an animal with a trad gear this year. Here in South Africa we are blessed with many animals, however there is no public land to hunt on. My aim is to take a warthog walk and stalk with my home made bow, arrows, quiver, back pack ect.....

I will document my journey, over the next few months, definitely asking for help many times. I will post pics of my equipment I have made so far.

Thanks all for your contributions to a great website.

Wish me luck!

God Bless

Pete

I got that. But, you made a goal to take an animal with trad gear and to me that's a new journey and this is a great place to start it. Sorry, I should have worded my post better.    :D

Really look forward to following along on your quest! Good luck my friend.

Here is a pic of the bow I built. 60" 44#@28. However I would like to be shooting about 52-55# so I'm going to building another in a month or so. This will be my practice bow for now.

Your draw length wouldn't change unless your form changed( unless you got taller, I don't know how old you are:) ). The question is, should you draw that far? What I mean is this: All else being equal, a longer draw length is better, as long as you're not overdrawing. Proper draw length means you draw to where you are in proper alignment. Without that, you will never shoot to your full potential. Terry's form clock explains it better than I can.

It took me a long time to really understand how draw length and alignment work together. Can you get a picture of you at full draw? Hope this helps.

Nice looking bow!
I don't know how your draw length can increase that much.  If you change from low wrist to high wrist grip, that might give you 1/2 inch more draw length, and if you were shrugging your shoulders before, when you drew, I think that would have shortened it too.

My best advice now is:  use a low wrist grip and keep your shoulders down when you draw, see what you get.
Good luck with your mission.  Keep us posted. Cheers
