Today my wife and I closed on 36.5 acres in Jackson County, Iowa. There are about 22 acres of timber, a trout stream, and 8.5 acres of sort of tillable ground. Yeah, it's heaven! There is a 2000 78'x16' mobile home next to the trout stream. Here is what it looks like from above:

The red line is the approximate border...I'm not real good with a mouse on a laptop, so it isn't exact.
This morning my eldest son and I hung a couple of tree stands. We were talking about training his lab to hunt sheds. He has one that has been in the house for a while, but he didn't know if it would have enough scent on it for training. About the time he said that I looked down and saw this:

It is the first shed from my own land! It's not very massive for sure, but it certainly seems like a good omen. I picked it up, and said, "Now you have one with scent on it!"
We saw lots of sign, but no critters today. We hope to establish some switch grass in the center of the field to give them a bedding area in the center with food plots on the edges near the timber, so we can sneak in on them without bumping them out of bed...at least that's my son's plan. We have a lot to do, but we a looking forward to it.
Cool! I would love to own a piece of ground that i could hunt on.
Good luck come deer season.

enjoy there is nothing like owning your own hunting land!! I moved on to mine in 2008 and love each day more than the last
That is very cool. The best of luck with your new honey hole.
Congrats on the shed but more importantly on the land! You will be hunting before too long!
Nice property, congrats!
Lucky
Living out your dream with your son and sharing it with us....priceless!!
Thank you!
God bless,Mudd
I closed on my 30 acres in Nov. so I know the feeling. BIG PLANS.
Your land looks great. Good Luck
As above, your own hunting ground is great. I don't hunt anywhere else, but we're lucky to have lots of game here.
That's a good looking opportunity with the open ground in the middle of things. A life time of "work" ahead.
Congratulations Russ, on the new purchase. I am looking forward to hearing some stories from your hunts on it.
Congratulations Russ on your land purchase! Nothing beats being able to hunt on your own land. Does this mean you won't be able to help me pull out a big one this fall?

awesome!! congratulations
Sounds like your son has the perfect plan.Congrats and enjoy your land.
Looks like a real gem! Enjoy yourself.
This makes me miss my dad's farm in SE Ohio.
Hey good for you! What a dream come true. One day. I hope to do the same!! Even if the dog doesn't find sheds. At least you know the bucks are there!!
Congratulations on your land and shed Russ. You're going to enjoy that a lot. A deer hunting and trout fishing spot of your own, it just doesn't get any better than that!

Wait till you take your first animal off your own ground ;) way to go on the property and the shed!
Nice looking place! Exactly the type of place I hope to find when I move back west.
Congrats on many accounts!

Thanks, guys! The hard part right now is not being there, especially since I still sub a lot. I will probably spend most of the summer down there though and as much time as possible in the fall. A couple more years of subbing, and I'll be free whenever...kind of like Bernie! ;)
It looks like a nice layout. The clearing provides so many opportunities for planting food plots, fruit trees, whatever else will draw deer. Enjoy!
Congrats on taking the plunge! I closed on 87 acres in N.E. Missouri on Nov 1 last year myself. Didn't get to hunt it last year, but looking forward to this fall for sure. Getting the cabin finished up this weekend. I did a lot of thinking before buying hunting land, but hey, the peace of mind knowing you will always have a place to go is worth LOTS!

I agree Ryan. It's nice not to have to worry about asking permission. We hope to hunt it some this fall. I talked to my son this evening about food plots and bedding areas. The best part is it is something I can share with my kids and grandkids.

Congrats, My only dream when I get more "established" in life is to own my own property and land to manage, hunt, fish, etc.
Enjoy the new land!
That's a perfect chunk of land for an outdoorsman!! Congrats bud!!
Thats Awsome :clapper:
Enjoy :archer2:
Congrats on your new land!
Been out a little this year on the hunt for sheds and the past few years been able to find a shed or two but nothing this year so far and still have a little basket rack 7-point behind the house carrying one side. He is the last buck I've seen still carrying this year. This little guy has been hanging around the past couple months and usually see him two or three times a week, and showed March 25th without his left side attached.
From what I've read, many will shed at the same time or within 48 hours of each other. Not this guy, I noticed him still packing his right side 5 days later on March 30th... Learned long time ago to never to say never when it comes to whitetails...8^)

Hey Russ congrats on getting all the loose ends tied up on your now land as the Iowa supreme court just made a ruling that my make it impossible to hunt;fish;hike;snowmobile or even visit a family farm because of a liability issue . Only now you will fall in the class of LAND OWNER which makes your liability insurance go out of sight!!! Hope we can get this thing turned around or hunting and fishing and other out door activities on private land will be over . Big fight coming stay tuned

Hadn't heard about that. Do you know the name of the case?
I just did some research on it and it looks like the legislature is going to pass a law that essentially nullifies the Supreme Court decision. I guess we need to put the pressure on our legislators to get it done and the governor to sign it.
Wow, a trout stream even. Good work.
Coyotes howling ; Turkey's gobbling at day light this morning . 10 days til D-day are you ready ?
Now you can shoot 200" bucks like all the celebrities on tv!
HAHA Bucky that killed me laughing.
Thats a nice shed though. That could be a pretty big dear this coming season. I don't worry much (or at all) about antlers to be honest but it can't hurt! Thats for sure!
