Title: CARBON PENETRATION?
Post by: TSHOOTER on November 17, 2006, 08:46:00 PM
I shoot 52@27" recurve with 2016 alum total arrow wt 510 grains.  WILL SWITCHING TO CARBON OF SAME WEIGHT WITH HEAVY FOC MAKE A NOTICIBLE DIFFERENCE IN PENETRATION?  I'm not satisfied with no exit holes on a couple of deer.

I shoot 56@27 and switched from a 2018 to an axis 500 with a 100gr brass insert and 250 grain of fp and bh and they fly great. I got bare shafts to fly in the same group out 30 yds. total weight is 595gr. i noticed no drop in trajectory against same arrow weight with less FOC.

Thanks for the reply texbow2.  Have any of you guys or gals noticed any difference in penetration on deer or other game?  I know a lot of threads talk about less shaft flexing, quicker recovery from paradox, high foc etc.  Is anyone convinced that carbons are that much better and worth the money to switch.  My only interest in this is recovering the game I get a chance to shoot.

You left out smaller diameter which can help on several fronts. Effected less by wind, less drag and less resistance when penetrating. Theoretically this is why carbons should give better penetration. You still need to do your part and put it where it belongs.

What head are you shooting?  That's the first place I would look if your not shooting through deer with that set up.

I'm shooting 125 gr ribtecs on 35 grain adapter.  Do you think carbon consistently outpenetrates other shaft materials of equal weight?

I have yet to hit a deer and not get a pass through with 2317s and snuffers. Put it where you're supposed to and it will go through, carbon, aluminum, or wood

Thanks for the replies guys.  Why do you think outcerts make the difference?

I've shot a bunch of deer with wood and some with aluminum. I started shooting some 3555 gold tips about 3 years ago tipped with Ribtek 160's. For me, I find a noticeable difference in penetration over either of the other 2 materials. All my hunting arrrows end up in the 500 grain range. I had complete pass throughs on 4 deer last year with that carbon set up. If the shot placement is good, all things considered, I believe I get better penetration with the carbon shaft.

Outcerts don't make a difference. However the arrows that you use an outcert on are much much smaller in diameter than the ones you use an insert on, and that is what makes the differnce. The arrows that will accept an insert, except for the new HIT arrows, are fairly close in diameter to standard size alums.

I had tried several different carbons and could never get one to fly right until recently.  I bought some Carbon Express Heritage 150's.  Flying good out of a 50 pound curve and 52 pound MOAB with a 145 grain tip, 29".  They weigh 10 grains per inch.

I also don't know why you weren't getting good penetration with your setup.  I killed a deer with the 50 pound curve and wooden shafts with no problems.  May have hit the off-side leg or shoulder.  I was shooting from a tree also.

I'm a believer.  I shoot 47#. With 1916's and 2016's and 2-blade heads I routinely failed to get pass-throughs although I killed deer.  With Axis/Beman 500's and 200-250 grains up front I've gone back to 3-blade heads. This year had two shots, two pass throughs, two dead deer isnide 100 yards. The carbons outweigh the aluminums by over 100 grains

Thanks guys

I think I'll order some gold tip traditional 35/55's and start tuning.

I killed 2 does a couple weeks ago, 1 with wood, 1 carbon. Same bow, same broadhead. Both were complete pass throughs...and the wood arrow had a tougher angle (treestand, high left entry, low right exit). Both deer went less than 50 yards. I didn't see a hell of a lot of differencew between the wood and carbon. I shoot carbon for durability and the broad range of spine wieght rather than penetration. I'm not saying carbon DOESN't pentrate better, but heck, through is through.....

I killed this elk at 30yrds w/ a axis full metal jacket w/ a 160gr ace on a 45gr adapter.Went thru the shoulder blade, centered the rib under the shoulder blade and buried under the skin on the opposite side.
This setup is very well tuned.  http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j172/overbo/035.jpg[/IMG]] (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j172/overbo/035.jpg) (http://[IMG)

Very nice kill Overbo. In the interest of staying on topic I won't say anything about your choice of fletch color! LOL

I have noticed a huge difference in penetration since switching to carbons. I used to shoot 60 lbs @29 inches with 2018's and 2 blade heads. I now shoot 49@29 w/woodsmans and 488 grain (total weight including the 50 grain brass adaptor) goldtips. I consintently get better penetration with this setup than I did with the 60lb bow w/aluminums. I have shot 2 deer this year with this setup with complete pass throughs and arrow buried deep into the dirt. After shooting carbons for the past 4 years, I'll never use aluminum again on big game.

IMHO, and I'm no expert, I think a well tuned setup, good shot placement, and sharp broadhead are more important than shaft material in reference to penetration.

I've never had trouble with aluminum or wood penetration, but I do understand the the smaller diameter carbons are great penetrating arrows, without adding the extra weight.

After having taken big game with wood, aluminum and carbon, I have to honestly say the carbons seem to penetrate better than the other two. That's why, other than wood small game arrows, I shoot carbon exclusively now.

Shot a doe two weeks ago with my 52#@27 Morrison using axis 500 with 225 gr. woodsman.  Shot was 10 yds from treestand quartering away.  Hit about midway back the ribs and exited low through the off side shoulder and stuck in the ground.  Cut a rib completely on entrance and shattered the shoulder/leg joint on exit.  Doe ran a circle around the stand. and presented a 25 yd shot slightly quartering toward.  This arrow hit where the thick web joins the scapula.  Shattered the web and blew a hole in the scapula. cut a rib under the scapula and centered between ribs on exit.  This arrow hung by the fletching for one bound.  Deer went another 10 yards before crashing.  I've never been able to get that kind of performance with aluminum or wood.

If you look at Dr.Ashby's report, small diameter carbons definitely help in the penetration department.
