Here's the deal. I'd like to see each member list their bow weight, bow type (L or R),draw length.
Then I want you to list what you think are the five best broadheads. From favorite to least favorite.
Wanna see if there's a pattern. :readit:
-
I'll start. 65#, longbow, 29" draw.
1. Magnus I w/bleeder
2. Simmons Interceptor w/bleeder
3. Magnus I without/bleeder
4. Simmons Interceptor without/bleeder.
5. Wensel Woodsman.

Recurve, 65#@28", maybe 62# at my 27" draw
Zwickey & Bear Razorhead, all I've ever used (ya, I know, variety is the spice of life)
Grizzly, have some, need to try them
Magnus, not tried one, but is there a bad one?
Wensel Woodsman, not tried one, but think I will
Did use a Snuffer one time and didn't get penetration I wanted, but could have been due to other variables. It did kill the deer though, so...

-
Interesting thread Charlie. I have one more suggestion. How about arrow shaft material. After using woodies for 30+ years I've gone to carbons for hunting and I'm not looking back. Still love to make those woodies though. I'll bite.

Used to use 2-blades exclusively, but very positive experiences with the Woodsman have changed my thinking on that. I would love to see a STOS with a small forward positioned bleeder blade.
-
interesting to see that the 3 blade heads on average score very low..makes ya think that dr. Ashby is onto something with his studies!
I know I like the 2 blade heads better.

Interesting thread and results so far a bit surprising. I would have though multiblade heads would have shown up more.

Recurves,62-65#'s,281/4-29" draw depending on bow and how wide the shelf is(front to back)...
...in 20+ yrs of trad hunting these 4 are the only B-heads I've used and none of them are bad,but since the WW came out,I've been using them.
Overall Favorite is WW..If I had to pick one, this is it
Snuffer 160's for turk's
Zwickey delta, killed a lot of stuff with these(used one last year for a selfbow kill)
and the Zwickey eskimo(killed a lot with these too)
DWendell, I agree with Charlie..first two will do just fine...good luck!!
Like them all,and that's all I've ever used

I'm kind-of ecleptic(sp) when it comes to arrows if I can get it to fly I will most likely have it in my quiver. Usually my quiver has one of each (I only carry 3) and I go with the mojo at that moment. people I hunt with don't always understand but it works for me.

50-55 lbs recurves and longbows, mostly a recurve the last few years. I don't think it matters if you double lung 'em. I think where the 3 blade shines are liver hits. I think it makes a bigger hole and puts them down faster. I do think the 3 blades make for better blood trails although I have had some really good 2 blade blood trails. I am talking deer. I am SOLD on the WW for deer. Gonna use them on Caribou also in Sept.
For hogs, (only killed one, 150 lbs or so, 2 blade Magnus) I think the 2 blade is in order for a little better penetration, maybe not don't have alot of personal data to crunch on this one :)

Thanks Charlie!
I found it interesting to see what some of the others were using.
-
so did you do an analisis of what were the most popular bows, bow weight and broadhead preference by the numbers ??? That would be nice...
-
Stickbowhntr... My main interest in this little study was to get a feel for broadhead popularity as regards bow weight preference.
What I did see, from the responding members, was that most of the above 60# shooters seemed to be more confident with penetration from there bows... picked larger and multibladed heads.
Also, since I'm familiar with the history of many of the above 60# group, it seems that more experienced hunters chose slightly heavier bow weights... again, remember this is a VERY small cross section of members.
It also seemed that as bow weight dropped, so did the popularity of the 3 to 1 ratio heads... which I found very interesting.
-
thank you ...I'm sitting here trying to go thru this with a cold and just overwhelemd with the info and may try to do just that for myself.... It is very interesting info ...I find as I age I am looking to lighter bows with even heavier arrows but still shoot for the most part 2-blade deltas.

2. Anything else by Ace
3. Zwickey Delta 4-blade

Bow River Whitetailer R/D longbow 68"
48@28 my draw is 29.5
Magnus Snuffer
Magnus Stinger
Wensel Woodsman
The heads are listed by amount I've used them. I haven't noticed a difference in effectiveness. I only hunt turkeys anymore, so I like the three blade heads better, but won't buy more 'til all of my old ones are gone. That might take awhile, cause the stingers are a very tough head.
-
I hunt with selfbows 90% of the time and glass bows the other 10% (Schafer, Robertson, Dale Dye, Rocky Miller Heritage, ECT...). The weight at my 281/2” draw is usually between 50 -65 pounds. I don’t have a preference with any of the following heads; just use the broadhead with the weight that makes a particular set of arrows fly best from a particular bow. I have found that straight flying arrows are the number one priority for penetration, followed by arrow weight, then type of head (two, three, or four blade).
1. Eclipse 4 Blade (155 grains)
2. Woodsmen (125 Grains)
3. Grizzly El Grande (190 Grains)
4. Magnus I 4 blade (165 grains)
5. Magnus II 4 blade (135 Grains)
Number six on the list would be the Eclipse 2 blade at 145 grains.
