Anybody live around the WMA's east of Dallas? I live near Terrel, TX. Anybody want to get together and go stick some pigs?
I am down south near Houston so that's a long way for me.
Do you have any tips on WMA's that might be down my way a bit? I've been reading and checking on several and can always use tips and advice from those that have been there and done that.
Nalajr
I have never been but I hear Sam Houston National Forest is a good place to go...100,000+ acres.
Didn't know there was public land between Texarkana and Dallas. haha
I might be interested to do some. Just not sure where to go.
Old Sabine Bottom WMA is a good one. It's just north of Lindale...planning on going in a weekend or two, want to meet up and go get some piggy's?
I'm interested in shiz-ka-bobbing a pig!!!
I live in S. Arlington (DFW area). Getting weekends off can be a bit tough at times but drop me a line and let's see if we can work out the details.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Andrew
When? I am a a little farther east
There's I'd a lot between texarcana and Dallas. Some is Mary corp if engineer land and all that requires is a regular hunting license. Some of the others you have to get permits for
Hello everyone I am new to tradgang. I have hunted the old sabine bottoms wma for the last seven years. I just got back from there 2 weeks ago. I would be more that happy to give anyone some pointers on where I seen hogs.
Beaver#1,
Are you looking at weekends only or would weekdays work for you?
As for me, I'll have to put it off till sometime in April. Work is keeping me on a short leash right now.
Nuctech,
I welcome any and all info that you are willing and able to provide. Send me a PM, or just post it here.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Andrew
It just depends on when flyboy wants to go. I work shift work and some weekends I have off and some weekdays I have off just depends in what the rotation is
Ttt
hey guys...sorry been busy. i have two youngins that keep me pretty busy. maybe we need to just set a date and work toward it. not all might make it but we could do it a few times. i pm'ed nuctech too for where to get startwed out there. beaver and piowduck, i like your signatured!
bapilot2 do you fly?
I hope you guys are luckier than we are in West Texas. The WMAs are closed after normal hunting seasons. Even during the regular seasons they are closed for archery unless you have won a draw.
Going to start me an elm self bow today and see if I can get it done pretty quick and maybe take it piggy huntin...if not, I will be using my 50# Quinn Stallion
If that is the case the corp of engineer public is open all year over here.
Flyboy,
Yes, I fly. I use to do some flight instruction but I haven't in a few years. I still keep the CFI current. It was hard to make a living as an instructor.
I contacted nuctech and he has provided some good info. I'm sure he will gladly pass it along to all who are interested. I'm hoping to head to one of the WMA's one day soon.
Ground Hunter,
A lot of the WMA's in east Texas allow archery hunting for hogs during most of the year. After getting into the conversation here on this thread I have been studying up on which ones are open for hog hunting and there are definitely opportunities available for hunting hogs. However, for those of us who do not live in E. Texas, it may require a good bit of driving.
That's cool. I wish we were so lucky! A drive in West Texas? LOL - I'm 140 miles round trip from the closest Wally World.
Flyboy, you from Lindale?
140 miles round trip to Wally World is a ways to drive. I don't envy you on that one. However I wish I did not live here in "The Metropile" of Dallas / Fort Worth... there's too many dang people.
I want in on some of this action. I've heard that Alazan Bayou WMA can be good, as well as the Davy Crockett National Forest. I think a group hunt is called for!
White Oak Creek WMA is 28,000 acres and is about 30-40 miles west of Texarkana. They require a 48.00 public land hunting permit. It is full of hogs. They have a hog season in Feb and March. Also, there is a month long turkey season in April or May that you could probably hunt hogs during that time. This is a hog hunters paradise. You can check all the regs on the internet.Just google White Oak Creek WMA in Texas and I'm sure that alot of info will pop up.I've mainly hunted ducks on it but have seen lots and lots of hog sign and have a buddy who has killed two hogs on it while deer hunting or scouting.Actually,in some parts of it,the hogs have taken over. That's why there is a specific hog season.
White Falcon: No I live in Forney, TX an hour and half west of lindale.
BApilot2: I am instrument/commercial and working on my CFI.
To all: I am down to whatever place you guys want to go...and I am kinda thinkin about maybe doing an overnight camp too...would anyone like that? I can throw down a mean peach cobbler in a dutch oven. A night roughin it in the woods followed by a day of pig huntin with a bunch of good 'ol stick and string guys sounds awesome!
Hey guys I am a little behind on this one but I would be interested and I am a couple miles east of six flags, I hunt public land
Flyboy,
I'll tell you one thing... the test for getting your CFI will probably be the hardest test you will ever take. For my CFI I had a 7 1/2 hour oral exam, which covered anything and everything related to regs, the psychology of teaching, aircraft systems, aeronautics, etc. etc. etc., before I ever got to fly with the guy. Then we flew for 2 1/2 hours. It was a beat down! But I passed!!! So, best of luck to you in that endeavor.
Back to hogs and hunting and the original intent of this thread...
I'm seriously thinking of heading out to the Old Sabine Bottom WMA this coming Tuesday, April 2. My plan is to get out there sometime in the afternoon, hopefully get in an afternoon hunt, stay the night, and then hunt most of the day on Wednesday. I'm not sure if I would be able to stay Wednesday night. I'd just have to see how it develops.
I've never been out there so this may end up being more of a scouting venture than a hunting expedition but I've got to start somewhere. I'm going to try and make a few phone calls during the day today, Wednesday, March 27, and see if I can get in touch with the overseer or biologist with the hope that they can give me some good advice and direction on what to expect.
If I make the trip is anyone else interested in meeting up out there at Old Sabine Bottom?
I would be in fr an overnight. If I am off.
I'm in if it works for my schedule... I'm in San Antonio...
I won't be able to tues. I will be off tht weekend. If y'all get to go give us a good report
Awesome! I have family coming in over the Easter weekend so I am out. I am going to look at what is going on for the following weekend April 6-7.
Bapilot: A scout report would be awesome, I talked with a guy last week that works for Scott at the refuge and he was helpful, I had planned to go to sabine bottom weekend before last but he talked me into going to Tawakoni WMA since it is closer for me. I found some awesome sign and even foud a hog bedding area that smelled like a pig barn with poop everywhere. I also found a 10 point skull (someone must have lost that deer)But I heard from a few people up there that there are a lot of meth heads in the area and like to bust truck windows out and cause problems.
Welcome sabas silva and bowhunter4life.
Any and all ideas to help get organized for a hunt and camp are appreciated!
Fly boy. That will be a good weekend for me. If you go I will
sounds good beaver#1...I checked with my wife and one of the rugrats has a ball game that day but maybe we could make it a saturday night camp sunday hunt
Flyboy,
Are you saying that there are meth-heads around the Old Sabine Bottom, or around Tawakoni? Did you have any problems while out?
Sounds good to me pm me and we will get the specifics settled iut when yiu get the chance
BApilot2
No the meth head problem is at Tawokani. Haven't heard any problems at all at old sabine bottom. It's a shame about stuff like that, I still may hunt Tawokani a little cause I saw some good deer sign out there.
Ok! We have a tenative date and time for April 6th 5pm at the old sabine bottom wma. I'm not 100% on camping that saturday evening but I am all but positive on Sunday morning meeting up and looking for some piggy's. Let me know who is in! beaver#1 is in I already talked with him, who else...
Best of luck to you boys!
I'd love to join in but I've got to work that Sunday. Keep us posted on how it turns out for y'all.
If I make the trip out there on Tuesday I'll give y'all details on how I make out. Hopefully the hogs, as well as the weather, will cooperate.
Sounds good BAPilot2. Good luck! The weather looks fine...all you need is some piggy's.
Anybody else interested sunday is the day for next weekend...possibly camp saturday night
Sounds like a load of fun. Don't think I'll be able to make it. Y'all post up a results topic. Good luck!!
Where are planning on meeting? I may be able to sneak away to hunt on Sunday.
Pm sent bdann
Due to unforseen circumstances of locking ourselves out of our house this morning and $190 later and on my way to Lowe's to buy a new door knob becaue it had to be drilled...my wife says i have to wait till next payday to go piggy huntin.
"The best laid plans of mice and men..."
I had intended to go out to the Old Sabine Bottom WMA yesterday, stay the night and spend all day today, to scout it out and maybe get in some hunting but the dang weather has been constant rain. There's no way I was going to head into that country with all the rain. So, I guess it will have to wait.
I was able to make it out toward Stephenville, TX early this morning in an attempt for Spring Turkey but sitting in the rain and drizzle was still no fun. I heard a few gobbles and got one hen to come into my decoy set but no Tom's or Jake's even got within eyesight.
So... pardon the pun... it's just a washout!
Flyboy,
That stinks about the lockout! It seems that the OSB gods are against us all.
Sounds like fun! I'm booked up or I would go. I had to burn a vaca day this Fri to get the spring food plot in since every weekend is booked till May. I'm in Frisco only up public I hunted was LBJ and no hog sightings
Were you up at "The Grasslands" recently? If so, did you happen to hear any turkeys or see any sign? Just curious.
Not in a year- haven't done any turkey hunting since I moved from PA. Saw good deer sign @ coyote, bobcat when I went
