I looked across the valley this morning and noticed some green in amongst the melting snow.
Bear starts here in a little over two weeks, and usually is pretty unproductive until mid-may. It seems to be an earlier melt this year, so it could be game on sooner!
Who is else is thinking bruin thoughts these days?
I'll be headed to Quebec in June. I have turkeys and hogs to keep my satisfied till then. Good luck!
Sean, theres definetly more than a few bears in the catskill region (Oct. 1st opener), and the north country opens Sep. 15th. Thats not really spring but it's close to home. Normally I deer hunt provate land openign weekend .. I think this year I may do public land in the northern catskills.
Here in West Michigan we had a bit of a break last week but it's cold and snowy again with quite a bit of snow left on the ground.
Our turkey seasons (multiple) get going around the last week of April but for me it's nothing but a diversion until the main event - spring bear! ;) SO looking forward to it!
I haven't hunted bears for a long time, but this spring I'm heading to Idaho to try my luck. I'll be warming up on turkeys in a couple of weeks, looking forward to the end of May, when I hope to find a color phase bruin to go with my jet black one.
-31 this morning here, snows up to my gonads, no bears yet. Hard to believe season opens in 30 days
I'll be in BC again down by the Fraser for Blacks the first week in June. Just love to see al the critters that seem to be everywhere that time of year. Blacks, Griz, moose, elk, deer wolf, sheep. It's just beautiful there.
Daz - snow here is deep like it is for pruiter (get on your tip-toes man ! lol). But like you I'm looking forward to mid- late May to start climbing the mts for these guys. Way tougher sneaking on them in the Spring (vs Fall) with all the dry, noisy grass from the previous year. And not nearly as many on the slopes as in the Fall.
Chompin at the bit to get the season started.
I haven't hunted bears since 1986 and I do miss it.
I called my buddy earlier today about an invitation I have to bear hunt in Nova Scotia. It will have to wait until 2014 though. Too much on the "to do" list this year.
I'd like to kill a bear with a curve. I used the "other" bows in the mid-80's.
Taking the new Widow plx to Newbrunswick May and in to June to hunt with 24/7 and his father! Can't wait! Being laid up for over 2 months now from foot surgery i'm going stir crazy! Good luck to all! Be safe and shoot straight!>>>----->

Yup, just bought my Michigan OTC Spring Turkey permit yesterday, and I actually plan on using it this year! I'm not going to let work get in the way again this season, and when I'm done with that I'll be in Quebec toting bears out of the bush with Sean. Can't wait.

Like Pruiter said, -30c here this morning, still a lot of snow... and hard water. Usually bears are really starting to move around mid may.... We'll see if I get to go....
I've got the fever also. But to much snow yet.
I just got my dear john email today so no bear hunting for me but my nephew drew a tag. I'm excited that I will be taking him out on his first bear hunt. It will be even better than if it was my hunt.
We had a late, lingering winter in here in Idaho, but with a little sunshine, I will be installing my cans in about a month--AHHHHHHHHHH, HUNTIN' AGAIN.

Nice pics Oldway!
I grew up in Eastern SK, and still have a lot of family in LaRonge that i head over to see every year or two.
There are some great colour phase bears in that Province!

Nice bears Oldway. This time of year can be summed up in one word, anticipation.
Just got the Tall Tines, and am hoping that I will be ready for the end of April beginning of May, so I can have a chance at one myself.
Then off to bear camp for 1 month. If the weather cooperates it should be another doozy of a year! Good luck to all!
Awesome bears!
The biggest topic of discussion in any bear camp is always how to decide when a bear is big enough to shoot...take a look at the first two of oldways pics and make it easy for yourself...crease down the middle of the head, ears over on the side of the head...arrow on its way...i would love to show you the pic of the smallish sow i shot last spring but my cameraman ran the battery on his phone dead talking to his girlfriend
Back to Manitoba for me too. I may have to show mb bowman how to shoot that new Talltines. Anticipation is definitely the word.

It's sounds like a great time in Manitoba this spring. Will be looking for some awesome stories and pictures.
I was scouting out deer sign on the state land behind my house last weekend. Not a lot of snow, maybe about an inch. I'll be darned if I didn't find a set of bear tracks coming out of a balsam swamp. The temps. had been in the upper thirties and fourties for a few days. Now it's cold again, about 20 dgrs at night. I almost think they semi hibernate here in the allegheny area of the state.Wish i could hunt them in the spring. Thats the time of year I see them. Half the time it's when their in my yard. :dunno:
