Hi all, maybe you guys could help.
I recently picked up an early curved limb Bighorn TD recurve.
My question is this;
There is felt material on the limbs where they meet and bolt to the riser. Actually looks like black Velcro type shelf material.
Was this done at the factory or installed by previous owners for noise reduction?
They mount ok but there is a lot of space between limbs and riser with this material there.
The riser has what appears to be a permanent plastic type spacer mounted to it that will be between riser and limb when mounted. This looks factory to me.
Thanks in advance......Philip
Mine has the plastic on the riser, but no felt on the limbs. I think it has to be from a previous owner. If it were mine, I would take it off.
I have owned about 6 T/d bighorns all bought new from the first year Fred made them up to a couple King era and all had a thin Plastic on the riser . Felt must of been added later.
I've owned lots of Bighorns over the years as well. The felt or whatever it is, was added by the previous owner. The thin plastic was factory and all that is needed.
Thanks very much guys. I'm gonna remove the felt when I get home.
I wonder if this bow was making noise at the limbs and that's why this felt was added? We'll see.
I wanna buy some antler knobs for it, I think they would look great. The limb bolts are smaller diameter than the typical bolts found on most other TDs.
Any suggestions who might sell antler knobs?
Thanks again......Philip
I agree the felt was added by previous owner. What a great bow the Bighorns are. If you can find one in good shape buy it. They are becoming a real collector's edition.

Hi Philip, when you Pm'd me you didn't mention your bow had the "plastic" gasket as well as the felt.
I assumed it had been removed. I concur with the above. The plastic is factory.
Trap.
Philip,Bighorn are really quiet bows, all of them. As all the other guys said only the plastic was factory..

I seem to recall that sometimes Bighorn takedowns would make a little noise from the limbs when drawn. The culprit was the locator pins making noise in their holes in the limbs. The cure was to put a little string wax on the head of the locator pins (allen head screws actually). Doesn't take much. If you get any noise you might try that.
I removed the felt and the limbs fit nice and tight to the riser now. Lots of gook under there now cleaned. The bow is in fabulous condition as well. No noise at all when strung and pulled back but I will find out if any noise first chance I get to shoot it.
Thanks TG for all the info and advice. I'll check back in afterward.

Philip,
I don't know what size antler knobs you need or if you want real antler. 3 Rivers has resin cast replicas in several sizes and lengths. You might check there if you don't mind them being replicas. I bought some accessory bolts like this and they look pretty good to not be the real thing. Several years ago (not sure when) there was an article in Traditional Bowhunter on how to make them. It looked pretty easy if you like to make things yourself. I had a Bighorn built around '04 and I remember the limb bolts being bigger than the quiver inserts which were 1/4"-20 but only by a slight amount. Maybe limb bolts were 5/16". I'm sure somebody can weigh in that has one.
Thanks very much.

My early Bighorn only had the plastic spacer. I'd pull the felt off.
I want to order antler limb bolts.
Can anyone tell me what size limb bolts these are on this early bighorn take down?
They are clearly smaller diameter than most limb bolts I've seen on most all take downs.
Thanks in advance.......Philip
on the limb bolts, my asbell era bow looks to use a 3/8 x 2" bolt that is used with the bushing that goes through the limbs, the same bolt thread that my black widow uses, only a little longer..
A Colorado takedown was my first trad bow. No felt.
