Title: which adhesive for rug rest & strike plate?
Post by: high desert rambler on March 12, 2013, 08:50:00 AM
i've always used adhesive-backed stuff for the rest but i want to try something else - what glue do you guys recommend?  looking for something sticky that peels up with the rest, like adhesive-backed rests - as opposed to glues that harden onto the bow and have to be scraped or sanded off... so, short question:  which glue is easy on and easy off but keeps the rest on well?  maybe barge cement? contact cement?  shoe goo?

what about two-sided carpet tape?  i have a roll - never used it for anything... anyone know if this stuff will peel off "easily" or will it stick too hard and peel up the finish?

thanks!

I use carpet tape often for the strike plate. Adheres well, comes off easily when you need it to.

Barge cement, but try and get the yellow tube which they don't really sell anymore, it usually now comes in a blue tube.

If you can't find barge, weldwood contact cement works too.

i always use contact cement.....sand riser shelf lightly...apply coat on shelf...apply coat on back of rug/leather rest....when sticky apply together and push down firmly...put painters tape over it and pull tight to hold in place...let dry.

Barge cement. Works great for adhesion and when you want to remove it, it leaves no trace without sanding or scraping.

Barge in the yellow tube. You can find it at leather suppliers online.

What is the difference between yellow and blue tube for barge? I got some blue at the Kalamazoo expo from a vendor, but have not used it yet.

I like shoe-goo, comes off when I want it to, sticks good until then, never tried the barge

I have only used the Barge in the blue tube and it works good for me. The Barge in the yellow tube contains toluene, no problem if you don't try to get high by concentrating the fumes.
