Perhaps Kirk, Sixby, Bob or some of the other bowyers could comment but I am curious as to the definition of a "static recurve"?? How does it compare to a dynamic/working recurve and a semi-static recurve. Are folks really building static recurves these days?

I had the same question the other day and found this thread with a pretty good description. There are a bunch of boyers making static tip curves. I have an RER that really flings the arrow.

i've got a Sheepeater Spirit on the way soon. can't wait to see how it shoots. never had a static recurve before, so it should be interesting.
I build three static recurves. Yes they are statics. Static means that the recurve part of the limb does not bend but retains its shape through the draw. It acts as a cam .
A static bow retains tremendously good string angle making a short bow work like a much longer one and virtually no finger pinch. If it is a sharp curve static which retains its shape by geometry it is as light as a normal tip not requiring heavy wedges or overlays. It also is super quiet as it has no or very little string slap. The string contacts the limb very quickly on release and the string rolls up on the limb instead of slapping it. This also eliminates a lot of vibration.
There are several types of static,. one is formed by geometry. Another could be your typical recurve with a heavy wedge in the tip. another is the style that Kemph uses which is a syah type lever. I'm sure each has its adherants with their individual reasons , I can make a real heavy case for the geometrical style , Weight, retention of string contact longer than most others. quieter, Shorter overall strung bow. This type of bow is extremely fast.
I just had mine tested by Kirk at Sasquatch and that individual bow tested 202 fps at exactly 9 gpp and 28 in draw. Sadly Kirks new model we tested was 2 fps faster. LOL
I was just looking at Abe Penners new bow and it is this style and very close to the origonal Talon I build. I am sure his is just top drawer as all his bows are. I know for a fact the limb design is really good.
this pic is of the origonal Talon, I have been building this bow since 2005, Its retired now and replaced by the Talon 11 and the new Storm Eagle which is very similar but with more reflex and is a top mount.

In the book "From The Den of The Old Bowhunter" there are several pictures of static bows. They had grips like Hill style longbows with tips like Sixby's Talon. Does anyone make reproductions of this style in a laminate bow today?
I do not have a pic on the site yet. I still hav to have my better half post up the pics and size them so I can put some on here. Kirk has posted some pics of it being tested on one or two of the threads about his new static. You can see it along with his there.

And I can tell you guys by my own experience Steve sure knows how to build them! I shot his Talon and I kept on coming back to it. That was a real shooting machine!
