Title: Backpacking elk hunt and sleep apnea
Post by: anchorman on March 06, 2013, 11:21:00 PM
I am planning on doing a backpack elk hunt to colo. in a couple of years. And since I have sleep apnea I was wondering if anyone else has done a hunt like this and how they overcame the need for a machine? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated...Thanks

Hunt steep country and hike a lot that should take care of any sleeping issues  :) .

All joking aside best of luck and maybe a little time out in gods country and relaxation will help?

look into finding a small solar charger/battery pack.

No it's not keeping a bib pad/c pap charged it's dragging it up and down the side of a mountain. If you have sleep apnea consider an alternative treatment like. Talk to your doctor and dentist man. See if you can get an oral device made. Should be do able if your case is not too terrible.

my dad has sleep apnea and I took him on a 5 day sheep hunt and camp/hunted around 9,000-10,000 feet without his machine.  He did fine!  I think he mentally prepared himself prior to the trip and had a good mindset in place.  When he hunted out of trailheads he used it though!!  Best of luck

Would lean heavily towards Dr's advice.

Depending on the severity could also come into play. If I miss more than two consecutive days, then I start to noticeably crash. My Sleep Doc routinely has stated that I am one of the few patients (viewed from elctronic card data) that virtually never misses. Based on that little bit of info, others can go some extended periods without ill effects.

Still would rely on the Doc's advice.

I have sleep apeena - check wiht your DR first.  When I go backpacking I take a small mouth insert (looks like a football mouth piece) that forces my bottom jaw forward.  Not most comfortable but it does help some.

As a retired pipefitter/welder I can draw on my life's experience to offer some sound advice. See your Dr. who actually knows something about your condition for some sound advice.
