I just get a finger nail under the edge and work the edge up a little at a time until I can bend it and peal it off.  I have taken the big ones off a couple bows with no problem.

Take some dental floss and work under it

I too have simply peeled them off with fingernails. Any residue just rolls up like a booger.

Just an add on to that.  If you want to put some old limbsavers back on, you can call them and they will send you out some of the double stick medallions for free.  Just did that myself.    :D

yeah, just snatch them off and then peel the glue backing. It won't hurt the finish at all. I talked to Marci at limbsavers a few years back and she sent me more of those little sticky things than i will ever need.
