Title: Bear Skull
Post by: Yellow Dog on March 02, 2013, 08:50:00 PM
Any ideas for a bear skull? Euro mounts are great for whitetails and other critters, what about a bear? Pictures would help. Need some input. Did a rug with my last bear and that one made it one day until my Lab decided she didn't like it and put a whopping on it.

European mount with bears are cool. My Dad has done them with scrimshaw engravings of hunting / wildlife scenes that were part of the hunt that looked really nice. Not sure if he has pics or not. I'll have to check

I'd love to have a bear skull mount of my own taking.

I just line 'em up on a shelf or book case.  Same with hogs & javies.

Here is one with the scrimshaw on a Buck he doesn't have a bear right now but they are sweet.
Especially when buffed properly.

I have mine sitting on a shelf right now.  That's probably where I'm going to keep them.

This is a PY Bear I bow-killed on a DIY hunt in 1984 before guides were required in Ontario. I just move it around to different tables and shelves.

Of course I think it looks best surrounded by TD components of a Schafer Silvertip.

A friend and I found this one while hunting. It was stinking pretty bad. My friend wanted the skull so he took it home with him.

We did not notice the arrow head until he cleaned up the skull. It was really a mess by the time we happened across it.

Got piles of bears skulls and finally decided to do something with one. The claws are polished to a jewelry shine. The broadhead is a 40ish year old razor head with a Canadian coin..  (http://i1265.photobucket.com/albums/jj501/jerryrussell1/0303131618_zpsc9f566a0.jpg)

A little better angle. The claws of a bear take a great deal of work to get right but they can really add a great deal to any mount.  (http://i1265.photobucket.com/albums/jj501/jerryrussell1/0724121647a_zps80afcfb4.jpg)

Jerry, in short, what do you do with the bear claws? Do you cut them off at the first nuckle?
Clean and buff? Clear coat? That turned out really nice! thanks Jim

Jim there is really no way to explain all that went into those without hijacking the thread here. I did a very detailed video on the process and I will post it up in a few days. I just need to produce the video. It will include claws and skulls.

Put a dab of epoxy on mine to hold it open.

Found this in the spine when we butchered the bear. The bear was in great shape when I shot it and had a perfect coat. Bears are one tough critter!
