I've used Watco Danish Oil for years and the only time I had the problem you mention is when I failed to let it dry long enough. Now I let the shafts dry at least the same number of hours that I soak them, usually even longer. You can't over dry them. Hope this helps.

Need to let them dry for at least several weeks if you soak them.  Give them a light steel wooling to remove any residue that might ooze out and dry on the surface. I use duco cement on Watco soaked shafts.  Probably doesn't provide as good a bond as bohning to bohning, but I've never had feathers fall off.  Can't say as I've had more problems with points with Watco oil.  It's important to clean the inside of the point well before gluing. I use a sander to grind my point tapers and use a fairly heavy grit to give the glue more purchase.

I have soaked dozens in Danish oil BUT had to let them dry really good for about 2 full weeks maybe three according how much humidity is in the air.
Now I have only used Duco cement and lost a few shooting but found them 1 year later and the feathers were faded a little but still holding strong to the shaft believe it or not during a year outside...The shafts did not swell from moisture and were cleaned up and new points put on cause the old field points were very rusty....The oil really soaks through if you soak them a good week or two and adds weight...
