Title: Off Season Hunts....Hogs???
Post by: Kevin Hansen on February 27, 2013, 08:28:00 PM
Hello, all.
I'm at the point where I can think again about doing some traveling hunts during the "off" season. I guess what first comes to mind is hogs, but I know nothing about them or where to pursue them. Not really even sure what questions to ask, but here are a few to get me started:
My time frames would be December, March, or during the summer months of June, July, and August. When is best?
Does a person have to enlist the services of an outfitter, or can you find land on your own to hunt? Is public land a viable option?
Best places to go???
Other options besides hogs?
Like I said, I'm not really even sure what questions to ask, so I'll wait and see what questions are raised by the responses I get.
Thanks in advance.
Kevin

Hogs are all over - from Florida to Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas and California. Texas having mostly private land would be a pay to hunt but there is some public land hunting. I think Georgia has plenty of public land for hog hunting.

You can also hunt exotic game in Texas but it's mostly high fence operations.

Have you thought about going after spring bears?  Bear quest is in June.

Javelina are a blast with trad gear since they're pretty easy to get very close shots on, especially calling them.  AZ does a Jan season if you can swing that, not sure about NM or TX.  Might be a good combo hunt in TX somewhere if you can find it....

Hogs are a lot of fun.  Got my first with a recurve last night!  Have fun and good luck!

Best time of year in Florida, comfort-wise, is between December and April. However, the hogs come to feeders really well in the summer and they also do a lot of rooting because those are the wet months(so there is a lot of new growth and softer ground).
Even in our warmest months, sitting on stand early and late is comfortable. High temps. are irrelevent because no one hunts in the heat of day anyway, the lows are what counts.
We generally have better hunting during new moon periods.
No hunting license is required on private land in Florida for hogs.
Fire away with your questions, I live for this stuff.

Guys I really appreciate the responses. I am reading, learning, and weighing my options.
Any hog options closer to SD?
