Shot lefty for several years and switched to righty the last few years due to the ole TP. Anyways, long story short I have been shooting righty and lefty for a few months and am thinking about a dual shelf, take down recurve. I would want it to be center shot both ways as much as possible and I think this would eliminate the usual dual shelf configuration. I am thinking about a bow where you turn it over and the use the other shelf. Could a riser be made where you could have a shelf on the same side side of the bow above and below the handle?
Did I explain that so you can understand? :)
Is this even possible in a takedown? What would be the weak points in a design like this? Would the tiller be impossible to do? Not enought wood in the riser? Or would the usual dual shelf be the best?
Thanks for the input.
A person makes that very bow that you describe. Been making them for years and shoots them both left and right handed at the Texas Hill Country Shootout each year. He even uses the same nocking point when turning it over. I can't think of his name. Dang it's heck gettin' old. Any Texicans out there that can help my memory? ;-)....Van
Same nocking point. Just messin with it in my head amd looking at my bow that doesn't seem like it would work but I believe you.
Somebody help us out here... :)
Maybe you flip the string?
I believe Leon Stewart had one like you describe at Denton Hill this year. You might want to give him a call.
Let me think....OUCH...that hurt!
I made a kids bow that way. Worked out just fine.
looked a little.... shall we say, funky?
Maybe this is a dumb question, but how can a riser be "center-shot" on both sides and still have any riser material left in the middle?
Magic.
Somebody post a pic if you have one or a website with one. Any bowyers out there ever make one or even think about it? I still can't get by the same nocking point like Vance was saying.....
How about a hole in the center of the riser, use the same rest for right or left handed shooting? TRUE center shot. And don't flip the bow.
Dan
John, I've pondered that for years and no doubt it can be done where it would work but it would not work well without tuning problems. The geometry from bow center to the rest would be way off either way. Many have been built with shelves on opposite sides but the down side to that is having to leave so much material in the middle for strength it places the arrows way off center making tuning more critical and trying to tune both sides to the same arrow would be tough.
Dan, the shoot through is a good idea except "true centershot" doesn't work with fingers. Mech release would work fine or at least better. I can shoot both ways also and it would be great when that critter comes in from the wrong side! :) ....O.L.
go to www.archeryhistory.com (http://www.archeryhistory.com) all the way to the bottom of the page, adirondack archery it will work , take a look.
i plan on making one this year or early next year take care
I saw a LB like this somewhere in classified, but I can't remember where it was. I saved some pictures it seemed to me soo weird. seems to be quite complicated to post the pic here, send me a PM and I'll send you the pics if you want
Good Luck
Yes it works. One nock set. Turn the bow upside down and nock below the nock set. Think about it :bigsmyl: ...Van
Where are all my Texas 3-D buddy's that have seen this Man and him shooting this bow that he makes many times. :knothead: :D ...Van
I remember the bow, but like Van, names escape me. I do remember the handle being fairly short between the shelves and the windows being small...
Pretty slick outfit though.
:banghead: :banghead:
I got it, Van. The handle is twice as long with the rest in the middle, right?
John, Try looking at these links. Also Ken Swann had a striker that he cut extra shelf in that looked real good but was a one piece.

Hey Van.
JT is who makes the bows. I do not know his last name or what JT stands for though. Nice fellow.
He runs with Joe Krout.
The bow has normal shaped handles. The sight window is small. The arrow is nocked under the nocking point then you flip the bow over change hands and the arrow is nocked over the nocking point.
He said that another guy once asked permission to copy it and he let him. I believe the other guy makes/made the bows and sold them.
My Bear Grizzly shoots of both sides!!!
There is a guy who makes a bow you turn over and shoot it opposite hand with a 4" handle he comes to most of the trad shoots here in the SE I think he is from Miss or ALA. sells arrows and strings and bows and acc.
Thanks Mike. Wish I had taken some pics of that bow....Van
