Hey guys I was just wondering if anybody here puts a special mark or indication of each kill you've had with your bows? And if so what are your personal identification marks?
I imagine a lot of you have had many kills so you probably don't keep record. But I would like to have an idea of what I can do to personalize and essentially create a 'legacy' with some of my bows.
I make a slash mark on my bow with a broadhead just above my grip. If I ever make it to five ill put the fifth diagonal.
I have been giving this some thought myself lately..I have an india ink fine tip marker that I use to write bow info on the riser after a build...plan to add symbols for buck, doe, squirrel, rabbit, hog, etc...not so much for keeping track of how many but more for story telling when I pass it along to my son/daughter/friend. (That way they know it works too!) :) My turkey box calls have knife notches cut in the paddle for each bird that they called in/located...my Lynch has a bunch.
I don't do it on my bows, but I notch my hunting knife for each kill. My father did this when I was a child. I thought it was a great way to keep track of them, and honor my dad at the same time.
Not for every kill, but I draw with a fine tipped art pen some symbol on the belly of the bow - bear track, deer antler, doe track, turkey track, etc. Not professional art, but meaningful to me.
I alwasy smear some blood on the riser it wears off after a while but I like to think some of it may soak into it. Just something I do.
I used to cut notches in my risers, but used up too many bows that way. :bigsmyl:
Had an old martin hunter, every deer, javelina and hog I killed with it I wrote species and date on the belly of the bow with a white art pen. Changed bows and the new custom bow was to pretty to write on. got out of the habit.

I just save the metal tags that are attached at the weigh in station.
Orion, You need to cut smaller notches. LOL!!!
I don't count on purpose. I don't want to know.
I have not, but wish I had. I think I have only had a couple of pictures made with a animal after the hunt. I wish I had taken more pictures at least. Cameras were big and bulky to take in the field when I was younger, and didn't have a cell phone with a camera during a lot of my ealier hunting years.
My trad bow mentor, I guess you could say, has a recurve that he marks his kills on with an ink pen I think. Just little slashes of five, but he has about 97 kills marked on this bow, all documented.
When I first stopped at his house he showed me his bows and asked if I wanted to go out back and shoot some. I say sure Ill give it a try. He strings up the bow with all those kills and hands it to me to use. I was very reluctant and asked are you sure you dont mind but he insisted. I guess I was hooked ever since.
Nothing on the bow...but over the years I kept this....a partial of all my arrows I found after the kill shot.

I put the year and number of deer on the back of my GN quiver.
Haha I like that Joe! My trad bow mentor hammered small brass nails into the riser of his bow. I am looking for a way to make a mark without damaging the bow
I mark the site with a gutpile. ;-)
Behind my workbench is a "collection" of heads I have not reused. Usually I put them back in service; but these are samples of heads of various makes/styles/weights I have used.

I don't make a mark on my bow but we do keep a score card for the farm (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8191/8125753653_b3ce923242.jpg)
I stopped doing anything like this (marking things) years ago when I was confronted by a friend and fishing / hunting partner.
We rented a boat on this small lake and were slaying the bluegills. Wanting to be able to come back to the spot later I reached over and put a big X on the side of the boat.
My buddy asked what I was doing, and after I explained he burst out laughing and pointed out matter of factly " you dumb ****, we might not get the same boat next time". . .
Never again

If I find them I retire them and a few years back started writing what I took on them. (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll128/cecilm_2008/DSCN1692_zpsfb7daddc.jpg)
Yep I'm a fan of saving the arrows, and Alan, I like the idea of notching my knife. I don't notch my bows, because I know that there is a high probability that they'll be sold!

Wonder who that might be??? :bigsmyl:
I mark the broadhead with a sharpie. I had one zwickey delta 4 blade that I killed a bear and 4 deer with the same broadhead . I killed the fifth deer with that head but could never find the broadhead again .
I hunt turkeys with a old beat up 870 and have notches on the bottom of the stock for each turkey , sorta cool IMHO .
Saw a humble ole guy at a bow shoot who just took a white paint marker and put a small dot on the riser for each deer . It was on a Damon howatt hunter , it had over fifty dots on it. Was way cool . He was almost ashamed to admit what it was
Not really bow related, but a buddy and I have a pretty cool thing we do when we kill a turkey. We'll use clippers to cut a small limb off of a tree where the turkey dies and put the empty shotgun hull on it for a gravestone of sorts.
