Hi All
I have dyed some feathers using Rit and following the general consensus from all of the feather dying threads I have found here.
Colour is spot on but I am concerned that the feathers are in a twist as you can see from the pic.
I didn't boil the solution, is this normal and will steaming return them to shape????

Good grief, looks like vanilla sticks. Hope you can save them. Bue--.
You can try steaming but that doesn't look promising. Sorry.
Pm sent. Call now if you can.
Holy Moly I've never seen feathers do that.
Sorry, but I couldn't keep from laughing.
From the looks of the towel under them, you tried to squeeze them dry? If so, that is a big no no.
Good eye Charlie!
I won't go into how I know about that :knothead:
They should steam back to normal or almost normal.
I've dyed alot of feathers and NEVER have had this happen . Dry them flat and see what happens, I bet they will be fine. When I dye feathers I lay them in a 9 by 12 pan/tupperware flat , then lay them out on a "gutter guard" (from lowes) so the air can get to both sides. I'd say they're dead buddy.
...I'm sorry
Try the dye from 3 Rivers ( I believe that is where I got it). Comes in a small packet - add 1 gallon of water and bring to a rolling boil and add feathers for 1 minute only. Remove and let dry. Allow liquid to cool and pour into a 1 gallon glass jug. Reheat and reuse as needed.

Lookin' pretty good!!!
erm well, those last batch were pretty stuffed!
However I received some great help from Magnus and I ended up getting the colour I wanted. It is darker blue than appears on the pic but matches the Aussie flag blue I wanted.
It has been an expensive and frustrating learning curve but I feel pretty confident that I will be able to dye feathers first go from now on.
