As a general rule strings are how many inches shorter that the overall length of the bow. are there any guide lines that might be differt or is there a stanand formula that one can go by.

I always heard 4" shorter for recurve 3" shorter for longbow. Measure your string on your bow with it strung at the right braceheight. That will give you the exact measurement.

In general, recurves use a string 4" shorter than the lengh of the bow measured from nock to nock. Longbows use a string 3" shorter than the lengh of the bow measured from nock to nock. If the bow has an AMO lengh marked on the bow this is the bow's lengh. Hope this helped.
AMO (ATA) specs are basically 3" shorter, longbow or recurve. It goes something like the AMO bow length is the string length plus 3". 'Course that isn't always the case--safe bet is to order or make a string based on the known string length. I've seen longbows get strings from 1.5" to 4" shorter than the marked bow length, recurves getting strings 2.5" to 6" shorter.
The old rule of thumb is 3" shorter for a longbow, 4" shorter for a recurve, but that is hit-or-miss. I learned that the hard way several years ago.

I make them all four inches shorter, but then I add an inch (8 inches for longbow and 9inches for recurves) before I start twisting. but I have only made 50 string so fare so I am still learning.

Ok guys....i got one for you....measuring the unstrung bow from string notche to notch. What is the procedure?
..... and how would this be used to determine actual string length? given the brace height variations necesary to find the "Sweet spot".
