Title: Two Bladed Broadhead
Post by: Submarinokotbw on February 05, 2013, 06:32:00 PM
Any recomendations out there for a durable quality two bladed broadhead that comes in 125 and 175 grains?

I am currently shooting vipertricks and wensel woodsman broadheads and really like them, but i have read some of the Ashby reports and i am open to change.

I am on a budget, but i can be convinced to save and wait...

They all work. It's a personal preference thing. I shoot Magnus 1's  STOS and VPA 3 blade. Love them all.

Ace is another good head that comes in a few weights, good prices too. Zwickey makes a good head as well.

I second the Ace, I ahve had great luck with them on both deer and hogs.

Can't go wrong with a Zwickey, the Simmons seem to be very good from what I have read. There are a lot of good heads, get them sharp and get them to fly straight and your good to go!

I've shot Zwickey Deltas for a long time and still have at least one in my quiver.  Also like STOS, and if you're into single bevels, hard to beat an Abowyer.  I usually have one of each in my bow quiver.

I'm shooting Zwickey Eskimos and Deltas.  Price is about as good as it gets but you do have to sharpen them yourself.  As far as quality......

Simmons is one heck of a broadhead. Major damage!    :scared:   I have seen them take out deer, turkey, pheasants and etc. Oh and they are very accurate. JMTC

I have nothing but praise for Stos and Magnus.

I have popped the spot weld on several Zwickeys (the blue Eskimo version), but that is small game hunting in rocky pastures and is as close to abuse as a head can suffer.  I silver soldered them back up and they fight on.

I'd save my money and stick with the Woodsman.

I use Zwickey Deltas, Magnus I, Simmons tigershark. But why switch if the woodsman are  what you have? They are a great head, easy to sharpen and penetrate as well as any 2 blade.

If I end up hunting with a recurve this coming fall, I will be going back to Zwickeys or Snuffers on woods.  Why take a chance when you have a very well proven product.
However, for the business end of an aluminum I really like the VPA line.  He makes some beastly heavy weight heads.

Submarinokotbw...

Are you hunting deer size game?
If so and you're pulling an average wt bow...
I'd say stick with the woodsman..nothing wrong with them.

The Ashby stuff is very interesting.
But where his studies really come in to play is BIG animals. True, his findings hold true for smaller game as well, but we start talking about how for the head is sticking in the ground after going thru the critter...lol

You say you have a budget...so do yourself a favor...don't sweat the broadhead too much. The woodsman is a good head. Save your fun money for something else...

I've seen LOT and LOTS of bloody pics on this site thanks to a woodsman.

Second the Eclipse. I use them for hunting marmots in rimrock. Bang them in the rocks and only need a little file work to fix. Shoot them out of a 64 lb Schafer

The heads I like happen to be the old Grizzly 190 grain El Grande (they are now a diffrent name that I can't remember) that are pre sharpened by KME. When done KME gets the weight down to 175 grains.

Since you read the Ashby reports he speaks about these very heads being in his opinion the best broadhead for hunting.

Check out the new Grizzly heads, I believe they have a scaled down 125 version. New heads are much better than the old ones, bevel is precision ground, Teflon coated and reasonably
Priced. Of course they fly straight, great penetration and are easily sharpened.  R W

Nothing a Woodsman can't handle.  Get them sharp and chisel the point.

If you haven't made up your mind yet I say stick with what you're using unless you are going after something huge.
P.S. Charlie knows what he is talking about.

My vote goes for Zwickeys, Magnus classics, STOS, or Eclipse. They all have a triple layer tip making it incredibly hard to bend or break the tip off on bone impacts. However I have to agree with Charlie, just stick with the woodsman for now I have shot around 12 deer with a bow and a small hog and never once has a 3 blade penetrated any less than a two blade would have even on bone hits.

I'm shooting Woodsmans now but have killed a lot of hogs with Magnus 2 blades with and without bleeders.Magnus are easy to get razor sharp and fly great.
Just ordered some VPA heads. Can't wait to try 'em out on the hogs.

Bottom line , all the broadheads mentioned and more will do the trick if you have the correct arrow and you can hit what you are shooting at .
Best broadhead is sharp and well placed, play around with a few , find the one you like and feel confident with it.

I've been using broadheads for almost 60 years so I tried most of them. For value and quality I don't think you can beat the Ace heads.

I look at most things from a value standpoint-but sometimes i deviate. Not so with broadheads.. In my mind, i can't see spending a lot of clams on broadheads when Zwickey and Ace are a super deal and both are tough enough to shoot through a dump truck! I Have always been a huge fan of Magnus 2 blades, and have smoked my share of critters with them, but I cringe now when i see the pricetag on them.

The Eclipse with a bleeder is my personal choice.

Use the one that fly's the best out of your setup, that will do more for penetration then anything.

this statement says it all!!! Buy any broadhead, then buy 3 files, its a joke to be honest. We tune our bows, We tune our arrows, Then guess what weight or broadheads will be when sharp.
