Habu carbon longbow.Been shooting this bow for 4 years now and have had several other bows in that time and I'm always surprised how well designed the Habu is in comparison.
-
Overbo, I've got a Habu coming at the end of the week, can't wait...!!
-
OK, I'll bite. Here's one my friend Cory "Heartlandbowyer" made for me last month. 62" 55@28 padauk and black palm. It points real well and really spits an arrow. Dave

Fantastic design! I love rear mounted limbs myself. This one reminds me of the black swan hybrid but better since its wood.
-
I've never understood the rear mounting, just looks so... Clunky. But if you're into that sort of thing the guy who makes eagle wings seems to be right up there with TIM Mullins in terms of craftsmanship and looks. (I like his traditional ones better though ;)
-
Rear mounted for take downs puts the grip forward of the limb fades similar to forward handle one piece bows. In theory it should improve forgiveness and promote better limbs to string angle at a given brace height. Though i am not a bowyer or an expert ob this. The fastest production bow I believe is Back Swan and it's rear mounted.

mooseman that is one slick looking stick.
Here is my hills country bobcat that I named "Anubis"

Waits for the huge wave of BlackWidows to show up.
Nice Hill country and that other bow isn'ttoo shabby either.
God bless you all, Steve

Timberghost bows are some sweet shooters!

Don Brown's Kobra Striker. Only about 7 were made.

another Hill Country Bobcat here. This one is named Coco Loco. I believe forward riser bows are more forgiving and stable.

Tried to post from photo bucket. Resize edit didn't take. Some days it works and other days it doesn't. Must not work when the month has an "R" in it.
Makes all this a lot less fun.

Habu Vyperkahn, Hill country Bobcat and Eagle Wing Talon - all Excellent belly mount bows!!! They are by far the best i have found.
mike
-
Of all the rear mount bows I've handled, i never really appreciated any of them until this one arrived on my door step. This is an Eagle Wing Tallon II with all the bells and whistles...
The craftsmanship alone was enough to make me set down and hold it in my hands like a new born child.
Amazing.... Simply amazing...
After putting it together, and getting her strung.... The feel of my hand sliding into the grip as i put a bit of tension on the string, was a perfect match to my wrist rotation and palm swell, and the balance of this riser was unlike any other belly mount riser I've ever held.
The draw was butter smooth all the way to anchor, and the pressure point on the grip felt like it was sculptured to my hand. most likely because it was....The way this bow shoots is flat out incredible..... Absolutely dead in the hand. excellent flat trajectory that shoots right where you are looking, and hard hitting.....
I think what i appreciate most about Steve's beautiful bows is the heart and soul he puts into every one of them..... When you put one of these in your hands you can feel the passion the man has for his trade, only to be exceeded by his passion for the Lord.

Roy, that Habu is absolutely one of the finest bows that I have had the pleasure of shooting!
I would love to own another one some day!

Kirk-
Please forgive my ignorance, but Steve who?

Me Steve, I built this for a fellow Trad Gamg member
Kirk I forgot how pretty that bow was.
God bless you all, Steve.

Guss I'm at work right now so can't do pics at the moment. But I'm very partial to Habus both the Vyperkahn and the old recurves. I also like Black Widows especially the MA series. There are also some other bows in this thread that look interesting to me. I like bows with the limbs mounted on the belly. The reason is I prefer the higher brace height. I have heard that this robs the bows performance due to a shorter power stroke but it does not bother me. I'm not into speed as much as I am into stability and "shootability" I like a higher brace height for better string clearance. Especially on a cold November day when I am bundled up in a treestand. I have also heard that bows with the limbs mounted on the belly may be more forgiving. I have a maccaser Ebony Habu recurve that I love due to the mass weight. The mass weight helps my shooting. If I were to flinch before release or jerk my bow arm the effects are minimized because it takes more effort to move a bow with heavy mass weight. The other reason I like Habu bows is the grip and I have a slight preference for the grip on the Viperkahn. It has a very narrow throat which seems to minimize hand contact with the bow and helps me to minimize torque. To be fair though there are a lot of bows out there that I have never tried. For the most part when I do try a different bow I don't like it as much. I've had a number of other bows but normally end up selling them and going back to my trusty Habus. There is no one "best" bow out there. If there were we would all be shooting it. It is a very personal thing I believe.

Here is a not so great picture of my ebony Habu recurve. I have taken the majority of my animals with this bow including the buck in my Avitar. Chris Cox apparently did not make too many that look like this. It is Macassar Ebony riser. Bamboo limbs with bocote veneers. She draws 52.5 lbs. at 28 inches. I lovingly call this bow "Big Bertha".
-
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n132/jonsimoneau/MountainReedbuckAfrica2009.jpg)
Here is another not so great pic of "Big Bertha" in action. But at least you can kinda see the limb veneers.
-
I have two BW bows. Don't have a pic of my pretty 3D Zircote/Splated Myrtle bow but I do have a pic of my PSA3 with boo limbs and no white lams that I hunt with.
Took this pic up in Alaska while on a Caribou hunt. The next day I shot a bull at 25 yards right in the heart. I love the durability of my bow and I have shot a number of critters with it since 2006 when I first got it.

This is a pic of my Habu Vyperkahn the day I got it. This bow is actually better looking now because bocote wood darkens with age. This is one of the triple carbon longbow versions and is still a little "green". Other than a few squirrels the only thing I have taken with this bow so far is a spring turkey. I did mmmmiiiissss a deer with it this fall though. I intend to take a lot of critters with this one in the future. I have not yet named this new bow.

I'll try to dig up some better pics of the bows with no animals when I get home. Yep I love bows with the limbs on the belly!

Those are some great pics, THANKS!!

Sixby your bows are interesting to me. They are for sure very beautiful.
-
Andy, I have looked for several years trying to find another piece of that macassar like that. So far thats it. I built two bows out of that wood and have never found any more that nice.
This is the other one. Steve Morris has it I believe. These are both origonal Talons. Harder to string but man they are fast!!!
God bless you all, Steve

Sawtoothscream;WOW!!! what a great looking bow. you are a artist. Would love to fling some arrow out of that.
Its a real different feel the first time you shoot a hot static curve and the arrow hits the target in a blink. It honestly made me do a double tke the first time I shot a prototype Talon.
Thank you very much. God gets the credit though as he is my teacher and inspiration.
God bless you all, Steve

Those are lovely. Really love the riser design.
Ok users of rear mounted limb bows. What do you like about them? Are rear mounted designs more forgiving to shoot or is there some other differences in shooting qualities?
-
From my experience, (limited as it is) its tough to beat the pointability of the design. Maybe the guys with more experience will chime in.
Cory
-
I have been building ones like these for a few years now and have come to really like them.

my buddy Dave needs to post in this thread. he just finished a super nice bow with this design. hope he sees this. i shot it today, right handed (i'm a lefty), and it was SWEET!

Nice looking bows, and the grip looks very comfy!!! Kudos for keeping the grip a simple yet functional design.

Both look great. Which one draws smoother? Which perform better?

My first rear mounted bow was a gray Habu Bushmaster circa 1995-6...loved the bow, hated the gray color so sold it and bought one identical from Chris Cox in brown around 1999.
I carry it everywhere even though is a bit heavy in mass due to riser design but shoots like a dream...
I also have some vintage Browning's with forward mass risers with rear set limbs....the Explorer's and not sure if the Cobra counts but is a very riser forward design as well...similar to the Red Wing Hunter. Here are a couple of them....also very sweet bows.

Rainy Day Bows makes a really nice bow.Great shooter !
-
Tell you the truth it's hard to tell. The maple one is 10lb heavier so speed is hard to tell as I haven't chronod the new one. Both have a good force draw curve drawing 2.5 lb per inch from 26-30". 31" it goes to 3.5lb and I have not drawn one past that. Both are pretty dead in hand tho the one made of massaranduba wood on right is noticeably heavier, way more than what I trimmed off the zebra riser for aesthetics could make up. The maple one is a bit quieter shot 3 under but equally quiet shot split.
Dave
-
Jess, I really like your limb profile and the bow is overall a really good design. God bless you, Steve
-
David: Those look great , You did a really good job on both of them.
God bless you, Steve
-
Thanks Steve, I'd be lying if I said admiration for your bows didnt heavily influence/inspire this evolving design. I am not nearly as sophisticated in the pursuit of performance as you are, and appreciate your help in the past tho to get this far. Your bows are heirloom quality pieces. Between you and Kirk, yall are awesome being willing to help greenhorns like me.

Consider my mind blown...what is that thing?!! Crazy looking boow and so cool. How far does it draw back? Thanks for sharing that pic.
-
Sixby, you make some amazing bows that are fun to look at. You and Kirk are the crazy scientists of the bowyer world and make some awesome bows, that launch fast arrows. Between Kirk's obsidian bow and your talon I don't think you could go wrong.
How much does the rear mounted limb help with draw-length i.e. Can you draw a 60" bow 32" for example?
-
I've never tried the 60 at 32inches to be honest. You can draw the 62 to 32 with no stack though but that is the max I have tested it. I would reccomend the 62 or the 64 for that draw. However I have found myself to be conservative compared to most mad scientists. BTW I love that Psalm and have appropriated that many times .
God bless you all, Steve
-
Strung and full draw pics of that little JT44 suckling please.
Well imagine one that can be pulled out of the jacket like a concealed secret service weapon.

that is the old Kiko Tovar design, correct?

Great looking bows. I too am a fan of these. They are typically fast and accurrate. That is probly discusion for the bench. I have a belly mount post there if anyone wants to talk. I have my theory why these are so good.

I guess that I am partial to rear mounted limbs too, here are four Black Widows, I especially like the heavy mass weight like the top 1225 model and the bottom PSA III with the solid phenolic riser. I would like to try one of Sixbys bows also.

Wow Les. Been a while since I've seen one of those A-Frames. I had a few way back when. I think I'm the reason they added the sight bracket piece to the mould as two I had blew up right there. Careful with that one. But I was shooting 75# back then too.
Here's my favorite at the moment. One of a kind. Black Ebony Riser with a thick black phenolic beam. She's Quick and QUIET!

Years ago I bought my wife one of those., It was the first belly mount bow we had. I liked it so much I decided to try building them and hense the Talon , Talon 11, and Storm Eagle. I was especially impressed with Marks tapers which were thinner in the sweet spot and thicker on the ends. He is quite a bowyer and has probably built more bows than any one man alive. His production and quality for the amount of bows is an icredible feat IMHO.
God bless you all, Steve

Please share your theory. And was it proven that rear mounted bows offer more accuracy in shooting than front mounted bows?

I cant say what has been proven ever but can give my thoughts on the design. Simply put the forward handle will point better. The real pay off is in short limbs, less mass, more speed and shorter bow. Since the limbs dont need to be pulled as far to achieve draw due to forward handle, you can then add preload which is speed. Theres a bit more in play but theres a short version. Good pointing, fast, hard hitting bow with in my opinion a higher forgiveness level for the size of the bow. Longer bows are forgiving and handle forward bows are too.

My Black Widow PMA III is the best shooting bow I've ever owned. It's amazing.

Here's the only full draw shot I have of the Little Suckling. It's the gentleman I bought the bow from. It does really make a small package when taken down, easily fits in a small backpack. The riser is solid phenolic/micarta and is heavy and dead in hand at the shot. Very cool little bow.

Great Looking Bows!

I love the looks of these bows. This might be a dumb question, but because the riser is so far forward, I'm wondering if these rear-mounted bows all tend to have higher grips. For example, the BW's I've seen have higher grips.
I'm a longbow guy, and prefer low grips. Can you get a low grip with rear-mounted limbs?
Thanks.
