Title: Thoughts on bow length
Post by: MikeEvans on February 03, 2013, 12:36:00 AM
Just looking for input on shooting a shorter longbow. I shoot 27" draw around the upper 50lbs. I hunt alot from a treestand but some from a ground blind. My current 62" bow posses problems in the blind. Am considering a 56-58" bow to combat this problem. Thoughts on difficulties on the shorter bows.

27 in draw should be no problem at all

Mike, The perfect blind bow is a hot static recurve about 52 to 54 inches. I just happen to make one. Grin Also a bow like two tracks makes or Bigfoots Yeti would be great. Cascade and some others make short recurves. Nothing really wrong with a Kodiak Magnum either.
God bless and good luck , There are lots of good bows to check out.

26.5" @ 53-55lbs  and my longest bows that I hunt with are 56".  I haven't had any problems so far.

when it comes to longbows and bow length and draw length, the type of longbow (its design) will greatly dictate the effective bow length for a given draw length.

shorter longbow lengths can only happen with aggressive r/d longbows.  a 27" draw can go down to a 56" hybrid r/d longbow length, but you should work with a bowyer on this to be sure as not all hybrids are the same.

So my thoughts. If you get a shorter long bow. Get a lighter weight than you would normally shoot. The shorter bows tend to perform a little more aggressively in performance.  Go 50# or slightly above. Should work out nice.

While I don't draw but 26", I shoot 56" hybrids most of the time. And, with the exception of my 62" mild r/d, I don't see me considering another bow over 58". Just don't need the extra overall length at my draw length. Longer does not make, cause, or allow me shoot any better.

56 would be as short as I'd go with a 27 inch draw.  Its not that the bows don't pull nice its the string angle making release errors magnify.

I draw 28.5 and I have a 54" Black Forest longbow. Its great !!  I shot a Widow KB that was 54" the other day and it was a hair short for me. That bow in 56" would be great but for your draw that 54" would prolly work great. That KB is a fantastic bow as well.

I draw 27"s and traded for a 50" tip to tip longbow from the classifieds on here. It comes in at 50#s at my draw length. It shoots outstanding! I also traded for a Black Mountain Shamon 3 piece takedown that is 49"s tip to tip and it is undescribably smooth and fast! I've had folks tell me they are to short to be shot accuratley, however I have found that they are no different from other longer bows. You do your part and they will deliver.

I think we have lost the "long" in longbow.    :biglaugh:
