Any of you guys ever foot a smaller alum shaft with a larger alum point? I have footed carbon with alum per the chart on here by Charlie but never to try and make an aluminum more durable. Tonight I
found an alum 2117 fits perfectly over a 2018 ( meant to say 1918)so it would probably fit perfect over any series that begins with "19"I know the first 2 digits represents the outside diameter so that's 20/64of an inch for a 2018 arrow,a1918 would be 19/64 and the 2nd 2 digits means its the thickness ot the walls of the shaft. Hence 18 would be 18 thousandst of an inch thick. Is there any longevity of an alum arrow by footing it with another alum footing. I know alum bends but will it keep it from bending as much. Thanks. Outside diameter is measured in 64th on alum shafts. 2018= 20/64 outisde .018 or 18/1000's wall thickness. Footing an alum, shaft will make it much stronger.
That's right ,my mistake. All the outside measurements are in 64in diameter. JamesV Have u done much stumping with footed alum on alum arrows.thanks

same thing 20 = 20/64 outside diameter 16 is wall thickness in thousandths.
2016 has an OD of .3125
2215 has an ID of .3138

I have played with alum./alum. footings quite a bit. You have to be careful with this as a lot of the sizes are off a bit from what the nomenclature would suggest. A 2016 fits pretty well in a 2216 but is a little tight. It is a bit loose in a 2215 and is a hard press fit in a 2219. 2113, 2114 and 2117 all have about the same I.D. as they all use the same inserts. They all fit well over a 1916. 2117 fits nicely inside a 2317 which by the way has the same I.D. as a 2419.
The best thing to do is to get a good caliper that reads accurately to .001" and take a trip to a local shop. Check the various sizes before you start buying arrows assuming you can choose by the stated size and a a little math. The best fit seems to be with an I.D of the larger shaft about .001" larger than the O.D. of the smaller shaft, give or take a couple of .0001". More than that starts getting a little sloppy and much less starts getting hard to put together. Different models or brands can vary by a couple of .0001" as well.
What size with fit over 2016?

On footing carbons I put 1 in footers on them, so I guess that would work foe footing alum..somebody that's done this may know what has worked. I use epoxy.
You can also use this method for lengthening arrows. Find the alum arrow that fits inside your short shaft and cut it about two inches longer than what is needed to lengthen the arrow. i.e. if the arrow is 2" too short, cut a 4" piece. Put the insert into the smaller shaft and hot glue the small shaft into the larger shaft. Then hot glue a 2" (in this case) piece of the larger shaft over the 2" of small shaft that's sticking out. Now your shaft is 2" longer, has a footed (strengthened) tip, and is a little heavier FOC. Kind of like a win, win, win.
As to the original question, I'd make my foot extend about an inch past the end of the insert. If they bend at the end, it's usually right at the end of the insert.
