Title: trad books to read
Post by: RobinHood1389 on January 31, 2013, 08:59:00 PM
Hey all, looking into a new book to pick up and read. Right now I'm torn between " bows on the little delta" and " my neck of the woods" add well as a few of the fred bear books. So as usual I ask your opinion.
What do you think is the better to pick up first?
Also any others you found really stuck out?
Thanks

I read "hunting with the bow and arrow" by Saxton Pope, the beginning is pretty slow, but the hunting stories in the second half were hard to put down when I was reading it. Tried to read the "witchery of archery" and just couldn't get into it, I know there are a lot of people that love it, but just couldn't get into it.

"Tension On The String" by Mark Baker is awesome, as is "Once Upon A Tine" by Barry Wensel, so far those are the only two I have read

Any of E. Donnal Thomas Jr's bow hunting books are excellent. You can't go wrong. There's been a lot of talk on here recently about Jay Campbell's book Longbow. It's a great book. David Petersons books are good reads as well.   You'll have to order most online unless you've got a really good independent bookstore nearby. I got lucky and found ONE at Barnes and Noble.... But have never seen any since!!  You can't go wrong with the Fred Bear books either.

Also, it's a question that's been asked a few times.  Do a search for books and you'll find a few posts with great recommendation lists.

Bows On The Little Delta is a great book.  I suggest you read it.  Read all of them lolol.  Fred Bears Field Notes is pretty good too.  I like the Witchery of Archery.  I'm reading Hunting With The Bow And Arrow right now and I like it pretty well.

x2 what skitch said. Don Thomas' books are excellent. I'm sure the other ones are as well, but you asked which to pick up FIRST.

Just Read jay Campbell's book and it was really good.  Anything by E. Donald Thomas is great and I loved Witchery of Archery, very humorous and interesting!  Archer's Tale, by bernard Cornwell is a great read too!

Then I'd go to
Dave Petersen's books
Don Thomas
TJ Conrads
Brad Isham
Jay Campbell
Mark Baker
Bryce Lambley
and the list goes on and on...

I absolutely love Hunting with a bow and arrow and witchery of archery they both stay on my night stand. I often wonder with the ethics police in our circles these day's how many would allow Pope, Young, Compton, The Thompsons, Hill, Bear, Pearson....on and on to hunt our leases. There idea of ethics was giving critters a sporting chance not our crazy ideas of well you know!!!! we fuss about guy's taking long 25 yard shots well guess what these heros of mine did?

All of the above...have read them all and there is something about this thing of ours. It produces some great writers!

Jay Massey wrote three books. If you can find them, buy them. All are a great read! If you are interested in Africa, "The Double Helix" by Dr Thomas, as well as the one you bought.

The problem with reading great books like Jay Campbell's, Charlie Lambs, and Mark Bakers books like I have done recently is that it fires me up to go hunting. A bunch of hunts get booked and I get in trouble with my wife  ;)

Jay Massey:
1) A Thousand Campfires
2) The Bowyer's Craft
3) Bowhunting Alaska's Wild Rivers
4) The Book of Primitive Archery

Bob Munger:
Trailing a Bear

E. Donnall Thomas:
1) Longbow Country
2) Longbows in the Far North

Fred Bear's Field Notes

This is a start.
