Saw a nice bow rack at a raffle during my last bow shoot. Got me thinking, I would like to tackle building one... Would be an awesome "off-season" project.
Plus gives me a reason to fill those empty positions! ;)
I've got one in the works. I'll post up some pictures of my progress. It's far enough along you can get the idea.
Mine is just 2 coat racks hung horizontal about 2' apart, kinda boring, but I am building one for my office that is a slab with live edges and some 1/2" dowels sticking out for the bows to hang on ( saw the idea on here a while back). Will post pictures when I get her done.
I'm not a good carpenter,so I took the easy route. Piece of maple, door hinge pins, rubber tubing and some epoxy, done. It's got 16 pins on it.

Here's a couple I made.

I showed a horizontal one I made and got jumped on because the support pegs were too far apart - "a modified gun rack". Seems conventional wisdom says they should be no farther than the fades.
Any bowyers willing to go out on a limb and comment on that? I personally find it hard to picture a modern bow that can remain strung for long periods of time during hunting season being warped, weakened, or otherwise deformed by its own weight when supported evenly on level pegs. With self bows I could see them taking a set, but glass backed?
I'm thinking about making a "prettier" rack soon, so how about it, you makers of all these beautiful, super-performing laminated bows? Help me out.
Sorry if this is hi-jacking a thread, but I think the original poster would appreciate some guidance too.
Ron
Here's the one I built. Should have either built two of them or added space for more bows.

This is the one I have in the works. The dowels will look like arrows and they will have notches cut in them to hold a few arrows, mostly for looks.
No Ron, I agree... good info to have, especially when planning to build one. Great racks by everyone one.
I like the ones with a interior glass case behind where the bow(s) hang. I however am thinking of using cork board on the back to hang up misc. pictures and score sheets from shoots, etc.
I really enjoy seeing all the diff. designs, thanks guys and gals, keep em coming.
How is hanging a bow vertical much better than standing them on the floor, which I hear is very bad and will warp limbs? I would think most of the bow's weight is vertical and on the lower limb tip.
you kind of answer your own question, because the weight is on the lower limb when standing verticle, in time, the weight of the bow will cause the limb to twist in a certain direction (specially recurves), I think longbows are less prone as they are more linear. Reflex deflex designs will be similar to recurves.. I buy used bows all the time and 80% of the time, the bow is left standing in the corner of a closet and have limb twist, some are not as evident, you have to string them up to see.

Couple of pics of mine, none of those bows are still on it though, got 7 different ones on it now,LOL.
Here's one I made last year for my boys' bows. I've added some adhesive soft-side velcro to the cut outs for the bows to rest on.

I believe the question is a valid question. If you think about it, even when hanging by the string near the upper limb of the bow, the entire weight of the bow rests on the string attached at the lower nock - only 1/2" higher than the end of the nock.
Eventhough, with the bow suspended, wouldn't the string be in the string groove, so even as the weight of the bow is concentrated on the lower limb nock, the weight is distributed evenly through the curvature of the limbs where as if the tip is in contect to the ground, the weight will be weigh down in a direction not parallel or linear to the limb...
You have the right idea, Danny. Build a rack with extra space. You're "forced" into buying more bows to fill it up.
Could be trouble though...

Edge2009- I will post some pics of mine when I get it done. Spalted elm board with enough pegs to hold 8 bow vertically I believe.

Sounds good Tusc, look forward to seeing it!
Bjorn, you think you have enough bows! lol
nice stuf fella's
Here you go. Many of the bows have changed, but this is what I use. Most of the older bows hang vertically. The ones I shoot more frequently hang horizontally and you can see that I leave some strung all the time.

Why Bjorn... I didn't know you owned a traditional bow shop! You learn something every day, I tell ya. :-)

Did you refinish your pinnacle II? I must say it looks good.
Mines made with old arrows and split drift wood.

After 5 years she;s still waiting on that ring! Shes been very "easy going" these past 2 years hoping one will show up, think I might have to do some bartering! lol :knothead:
I built this from scrap pieces of 2x4 and 1x4. I stained it dark walnut but didnt take an after picture.

Scott, I really like that rack. Pretty easy going and simple.
You gotta' get them in the house and on the rack without being seen and once there they are for the kids and not you-that has worked well for me! :archer2:
Bjorn your bow rack and Hill stuff kills me
These are great.
Here's one a friend made for me out of cherry:

Ron, I very much agree!
Two friend applications are being sent asap! lol

Thanks! I'll pass your compliments on to him. I think this is the only bow rack he's ever made. Some of the inlay work he's done on desks and the like that he's made seems museum level quality to me. As far as I know, he's never done any woodwork for money, just for the love of doing it.
Are there any sites/stores that sell bow racks?
3Rivers sells a few. They have one that has a bear, elk,or whitetail scene that looks like it's copper coated that I was thinking about getting to add to the one I'm building.
Here is a simple one I built...room for one more...hmmmmmm :D

Told you I would finally get around to it Jake. :knothead:
Rack is made from a piece of spalted elm stained with golden oak stain and covered in two coats of hellsman. Be forewarned my picture skills suck....

Went on a road trip two weeks ago to visit some friends in Oklahoma and he made this one for me, haven't gotten it hung up yet, but since I'm snowed in today and probably tomorrow I might make that happen.

I don't see how some of ya'll ever decide which bow to hunt with. :dunno:
Boards bought Home Depot, drilled holes, put in Pegs, hanger in back, stained.
