Title: Whitetail hunting near Pittsburg, New Hampshire
Post by: Over&Under on January 28, 2013, 09:22:00 PM
My wife and I are planning a trip to visit some friends near Pittsburg, NH this fall and was hoping to pick your brains about the whitetail hunting in that area.

It appears that I must only purchase an archery license (at least the way I read it) to hunt deer during the archery season and can pick up a bonus tag on top of that.

This will be my first whitetail hunt, but will be hunting with my buddy (compound) who has limited experience, and am hoping to just get some points in the right direction for WMA's close by or certain public land that I could hang a stand in...not fishing for secret spots.

Thanks to all

Jake

Dang, just looked it up. That's like Canada. I have no idea about that area, but my in laws have 225 acres in VT.  I can also hook you guys up with some great hunting in NY.

New Hampshire is a lot like northern New York, low deer density. PM Bill Carlsen on this site. He's a native up there and I'm sure he can help you out with ant info you might need! It's sure pretty country......

Hey Jake,
When are you looking at coming out?  I used to hunt up there every year, it is big country with low deer densities. I used to hunt a lot in the area of Big Brook Bog off of Route 3, and also off of Indian Stream Road.

As far as land goes, it is pretty much  open to all. In New Hampshire, if it isn't posted or you aren't told that you can't be there, you are all set to hunt it.

There are a couple of other places I can help you out with, just let me know. Maybe I can even come up and hunt a day or two, it would be nice to get back up there.

You will have no problem finding land to hunt on. LOTS of it but not many deer. I would suggest that if the apple crop is decent next year you find an old apple orchard to hunt. While you are at it get a bear tag, as well. Sometimes in places like that you will find more bear sign than deer sign. Also, be sure to read the regs for that area. Because of low deer densities there are regulations that apply to the rest of the state that do not apply there....it's more restrictive, in general, so be sure you know the laws and change from year to year depending on the winter severity. A few years ago my wife and I went up there to hunt. The fellow who owns Pine Oak lodge is a guide and he pointed us in the right direction. If we had had more time I think we could have scored a deer or a bear.

See, I told you Bill could help.  I forgot all about you David, sorry. New Hampshire is a beautiful state, love the mountains up by Lincoln and Conway!

Lol. Yeah. About an hour from Rutland. Haven't hunted it much but it holds quite a few deer and bear.

You'll see more moose than deer,at least
that was my experience there.Might be better off just trying to get small game.Lots of patridge there, and I'm sure you could jump a snowshoe here and there as well.Beautiful place though.Would love to have a camp there.I hunted on Day rd.

This brings back memories....spent a good part of my summers as kid growing up flyfishing all over that country.

Youll have fun just fartin' around up there.

If the bear baiting season is still open when you plan to visit, get your compound shooting buddy to find a couple of places to set out baits. Make sure they are at least a mile apart and have him start collecting pastries and stuff. Deer hunt in the AM....bear hunt in the PM.

Thanks for all the help guys!
Chuck, no this is after elk season:)
Bill, thanks for your recommendations....

Boy bow things can change in a hurry.
Spoke to my friend last night and we are now going to be hunting closer to his home in New Jersey...actually just across the border into Pennsylvania.

I will start a new thread:)

Thanks again for everyone's help!!!

Freind's brother has a camp up there and hunted during gun season. He said there seemed to be quite a few deer. But what we call a lot of deer is probably not what most of you would call a lot of deer.
