Title: Broad Heads
Post by: Deeter on January 25, 2013, 03:01:00 PM
Hello to ya all on tradgang.  I am new to this sight and traditional archery.  I fainally gave up the compound.  What would be a good broad head weight?  My arrows are 500 grains with a 75 grain insert.  Thanks

Welcome. I'm new here too. I think you're in for a very pleasant website. Generous, informative and friendly. BTW, I've always gone with 125 grain broadheads. But that was almost 30 years ago.

What is the spine of your arrows, how long are they, what poundage is your bow, What type of bow ( recurve /Longbow ) fast flight string or b-50 , are a few that come to mind.

What weight field point are you currently shooting with those arrows and how do they "fly'?

Welcome to the "Gang"!  What are your plans as far just shooting or hunting or etc......  Generally 125 grains is the starting point. More info is needed.

Welcome to trad gang, I recommend looking into joing The PBS-Professional Bowhunter Society. As fsr as weight of heads,  we need to know what bow your shooting etc. It all depends on which weight hesd will fly best out if your setup!

A little reverse thinking here. Choose good BHs in 2-4 blades that you like and then choose total arrow target weight for your bow and game intended. Then build and tune the arrow system with adapters etc. and test/tune using field pts. the same as your choice of BHs.

OK well hear is more info I am shooting a 1966 Bear Kodiak Recurve.60" 42#.  my draw length on this bow is 26 3/4".  I am Shooting the Beman Carbon Center Shot. 500, 8.3 GPI, 30" arrow, with a 75 grain insert and a 125 grain field point.  I plan on using this bow for deer hunting and when I get better who knows what critter will be next.

If they fly good you should be fine. 125's have been killing critters for a long time. Just make sure they're shaving sharp and put them where they need to be.

Welcome!  Get some 125 gr. broadheads (start cheap, like close outs at wally world) and set one or two up as a practice head.  Shoot it with your field tips (a sand bank is good if you do not have a bh target).  If the bh arrow flies straight and groups with the feild points you are good to go.  If it flies right it is too heavy, left to light.  If they fly good you can look at getting the head you want to actually hunt with in the same weight.

Welcome to tradgang  :wavey:  If your 125 field points fly well then 125 broadheads would be the place to start. Take a look at these websites: big jims, 3 rivers, braveheart archery, kustom king, each carry some 125gr broadheads.

I would highly recommend using Magnus stingers 2 blades in the weight that you get perfect flight from.

Welcome!  Looks like the experts got to you first, so you don't need my 2 cents.  I am shooting 75 gr. inserts and 105 gr. Muzzy phantom 2 blades, 8 gpp.  No kills yet, but they hit like a hammer. Good hunting.

If your arrows are tuned to the bow now and the 125 shoot good you can stay with that wt head or try a 175 grain head (VPA, Simmons, others etc...) with a regular insert and get you in the same total wt set-up.  Play around see what works for you!

Welcome   :campfire:  If the 125 gr. field tips work for you then use the same weight bh, there are numerous bhs to choose from at that wt.
