Good afternoon TG, I want to go coyote hunting this weekend, and would like some cost effective (no electronic calls!) techniques, calls and strategies for coyote hunting a relatively small piece of property bordering the North Raccoon River here in central Iowa.....Thanks!
Hunting alone or with other persons?
Killing a yote with traditional archery gear on purpose without a caller, is going to be tough, good luck with that...8^)
Similar to stalking crows in an open field without cover...8^)
(Sorry, couldn't help myself. Heard the open field crow thing on another site and liked it...8^)))
You should have another hunter with you. Set up about 100yds down wind of the caller as most often they circle down wind. Another way is to hunt over bait. What works well is a bucket of frozen fish or fish parts. Dump the fish up wind of your blind. The bucket of fish holds the shape of the bucket. The coyotes wont run off with any of the bait as they have to naw at the frozen bait. You might get a shot at other critters like fox or coons. The bait should be put out a couple of days in advance so they have time to find it and get used to it. Also when one of them finds it they tell there buddies.
I will be hunting by myself. I have heard of getting a distress call, and putting a stuffed animal on a string out in the field and pulling on it to give the yote something to look at. Anybody tried this? and killshot-I am not sure if in Iowa I can legally bait for coyotes, I will have to check that out
I have shot a few while hunting, but would like to just get out for some fun as I saw way WAY too many yotes this year while deer hunting
Hunting a small area , is not great for calling, you get one chance and the games over. calling needs many stands over a large area.
Scout area before hunting. Yotes have pee markers, preferred trails they travel on, Yokes are very much a creature of habit
If the river is frozen, take a old shed deer horn, chip a hole in the ice and freeze the horn in with tops sticking out of the ice, then pee on it. yotes will start doing the same.
If river is frozen and there are muskrat pushups, yotes can check them on a daily bases.
All so beaver houses are great places to setup to ambush a yote
If u want to call, we are approaching breeding season, howling would be my call of choice
Yotes know their territory like you know the back of your hand, I believe taking the time to learn their territory will aid you in out smarting him or her
hope this helps

Hunting yotes with a bow is a blast. I have called them in before but only after I seen them in the distance. Using mouth call is going to be hard on a solo hunter. A yote is going to be very keen on where the sound is coming from unless its windy and your calling is thrown off. I would get up on a tree stand and place a stick with a feather tied to it a few yards up wind from the stand. Hopefully if a yote comes he will be focused on the feather and cross in front of you.
Good luck
hang your decoy on a barbed wire fence with a fishin reel to tug it, treestand ???
once called, they wise up-make the shot count
One of the smartest animals in the woods IMO.
But they must eat a lot, especially if they have pups.
They are driven by hunger so use that to your advantage
Im guessing to get stick bow close one would have to be real lucky or real good!
There is a guy on here that goes by Thumper Dunker. He is a coyote killing machine...might want to get some info from him. If he posts, listen.
Do a search for threads started by Thumper Dunker. The man is a Coyote killing machine!!!!!!!

Thumper Dunker is that one! And I mean real good!
He is by far the best yote killer I have ever heard of. He routinely calls in and kills more yotes with a trad bow than anyone could possibly imagine. Heck, I would be willing to wager that he could match (or exceed) against almost any gun hunter with the number of yotes he's taken with trad bows.
Check your state regs,in NJ you have to have a calling device in your possession when hunting yotes.
What bornagainbowhunter said X2!
I'm no expert but mouse squeak is free and might help bring em in to trad range. I usually cheat and use the fox pro on the other calls.............. HAPPYHUNTING
coyotes will humble a tradbowman with the quickness. But THumper dunker lays them down regularly.... maybe he'll be along shortly..
I'm going tomorrow morning. I've been Thumper Dunker inspired for sure. He makes it look easy, which we all know it most certainly is not! I went last weekend and saw one but i think he had caught our scent cause he was high tailing out of there when i caught a glimpse.. I'm going to set up down wind of an electronic call tomorrow. We'll see...
In Iowa its a continuous open season with no limits, just have to have a valid hunting license so I wouldn't imagine there would be a ton of regulations but I will find out tomorrow either way
When I go calling Im only on a stand for 10-20 minutes then move on to another spot.1/2 to a mile or more away. In your small spot I would not call but look for trails ,scat ect. Put up some kind of bait that smells good I like rabbit urin on a stuff animal. A old rag soaked with it will work. Something that smells like rotton meat will work also. Those deer in heat and other deer atractants work also. If you have more than one spot to go to Any distres rabbit call will work. Fawn calls work well also. But only call for a few minutes then move on. Keep your bow in hand and arrow knocked to keep movement down. In woodsy or brushy places you only have seconds to make the shot.Stay upwind of the bait or decoy. I put in a good 40 + miles on a day of calling, that just going to stand to stand. But you can get them on ambush just have to play the waiting game. Good luck.
"Stay upwind of the bait or decoy"
Did I read this right?
Hey Thumper Dunker, I was reading through some of your old posts, you sir are a yote hunting machine! Have you ever thought about making a trad yote hunting movie or book? Could be big for ya, I would sure purchase it because I haven't even seen as many coyotes in my whole life as you have killed with your recurves!!!
Wooops! Stay down wind of the bait or decoy.
Well, no luck for me this morning. All kinds of yote sign where I was but none responded to our calling. Out setup seemed good. We had a quivering rabbit and an electronic call with rabbit distress. We set up about 50 yards down wind. Did 4 different sets about a 1/2 mile apart. Oh we'll... It was fun. Ill keep trying.
I have seen on Saturday cartoons when I was a kid that anything labeled ACME is deadly on coyotes :)
Hit it next week but at a difrent time Maybe 1hr later or earlyer.Only call for maybe five minutes and not real loud . Do more looking than calling. This time of year they are thinking with hormones and sometimes they are just not hungry. Find thier traks and they will be back.
Keep at it.
thumper is dead right, Hormones be kicking into high gear soon. scent markers become very important this time of year, had a cat and used the litter box waste, was deadly on both cats , wolves and yotes.
I put the litter in a low draw, and sat above on the down wind side. was kind of a funnel coming up from river, Would go in evening and just sit and a 1/2 hr before dark would give a few howls
managed to get 2 yotes and a cat at this setup,
here is a link to Rich Cronks site
he has some good howling sounds on site person can listen too

hope it helps
