Title: What was the Howard Hill 2016 shaft quote...
Post by: Stump Buster on January 23, 2013, 02:53:00 AM
Hey All,

I thought I read somewhere Howard Hill stated something along the lines of...

"If you can't tune a bow with arrows using 2016 shafts, the bow can't be tuned"

...or something like that.

Can someone tell me if he said/wrote something similar or am I remembering the quote incorrectly?

Right now... I'm finding this to be pretty accurate as 2016's are flying great out of 3 of my bows with 100gr points.

I'm thrilled I can stock up one and use one shaft for all 3 bows, but I'm still looking for a carbon that shoots as well as the 2016's for the durability.

Any help tracking down the source of this quote is appreciated.

Thanks,

Stump

I believe you are thinking of Jack Howard not Howard Hill.

Howard Hill was a wood guy.

Ok the J.H. quote I was thinking of mentions 2114 not 2016 so maybe we are talking about two different quotes? Here is the link regardless....

It was definitely Howard Hill, but I can't remember if it was a 2016 or 2018 shaft. It's been a while since I last read it and I thumbed through my books last night real quick and couldn't find it there. I'm thinking I read it on-line, so it may have been mentioned in conversation while has was talking to someone who met him.

I'll keep looking on my end too.

Thanks Again,

Stump

Did you check the legends section on the main page(great videos)? Tom Massatto (a member here) is like the HH guru send him a PM and he may know.Or check on the HH website maybe they have some article or something.

As stated above, Howard Hill used wood shafts. As far as I know he never shot aluminum. He never mentions aluminum in either of his books or any of his writings that I have read.

Yeah...That's why I'm thinking it might have been told to someone by Howard Hill later in life in a conversation or interview. Since Hill shot with so many people, he'd have a good idea what aluminum shafts were working for folks who used them I reckon.

I'm getting older (haven't taken any gingko biloba today   :D   ) and it was at least 5-9 years ago when I read it the first time here or on the LW.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully somebody else will remember the source and accurate line in the quote.

Thanks Again!

I read that Howard when retired to Alabama was shooting 2018s with a custom broadheads.  I believe I read that the head weight was nearly 200 grains and the bow was 75 pounds.

Arrow Dynamics, which are tapered, are the most spine tolerant carbon arrows I have tried. I can use the same arrows for bows from 45 to 55 pounds by simply changing point weight.

The arrow that Howard Hill used to shoot Tembo the rogue elephant was aluminum. Jerry Hill also told me that him and Howard tested shafts for Easton.

Doug Easton asked Howard to shoot his aluminum shafts when he first brought them out. 2219 was the size.

Not really sure if that's a Hill quote or not. Just don't think Howard would use the word "tune" and 2016 is a damn light spine for the bows he shot... even in his later years.

It may have been 2018's, but I think it was 2016's in the quote. The quote was probably closer to "good flight" rather than "tuning" but it was the general idea.

I couldn't google-fu it, so I'm probably mistaken.

No harm, no foul... at least the 2016's work with my bows and I'm thankful for that. Gonna try 500 and 600 Axis shafts next, just to see if I can get similar results.

Thanks for the replies... I'll keep this on page one for a week to see if it triggers any memories then let it die in the archives.

All the Best,

Stump
