Looking for anybody in the western part of our state looking to get together for some bunny hunting this winter.Thought it might be fun to get out and try to get some with our bows. I only have 2 problems, one is I don't own a Beagle, and two where I live in the southern tier not many rabbits at all.So if you are willing to share your spots and or dog with fellow Trad gangers for some fun lets try to put this thing together.
Would be fun if there were more rabbits. Darn coyotes have em rather scarce. I saw one while hunting this entire season in Cuba ny. I guess the trick would be to find a huntable population somewhere. I've seen a rabbit hunting club on the east edge of Olean NY. Never looked into it.
TTT
Iv' been thinking the same thing Longrifle.I haven't hunted rabbits much in years. I think you have an excellent Idea. I bet we could find enough places to hunt some bunnies. Dog or no dog, I say we do it. I used to shoot afew on sunny days in the winter, or just go threw and stomp the brush piles.Get a few of us together and move some rabbits. You can count me in. Steuben counties where I'm at.
Im downstate but i admit that it sounds interesting..never chased bunnies with a bow before..
Lets try to keep this post fresh for a few days gentlemen to see if we can get the interest up.And I don't mind hunting without a dog, stomping brush piles is my specialty.
Plenty of bunnies around us, problem is they are all nocturnal. Rare to see one here, but when it snows, there are tracks all over the yard come morning.

yup, always have rabbits in our yard at night, during the day its so hard to find them, and when I do its in the thickest stuff where no shots are available.
I'm in. Let me know when.
Well this could be interesting if it gains momentum ... short straw follows the rabbit tracks??? :)
im in long island but hey count me in.. ill admit ive never gone hunting at all with my bow im still practicing my shot.
Bunnies are nocturnal by nature and usually always stick to the heaviest, impenetrable cover. This is half the fun hunting them with stick bows. Chapstick is the most important bunny hunting accessory I can think of. Youll smile and laugh so much, without it, your lips will be a cracked bloody mess by the time its over. Have fun fellas and take pics. I wish my brother in Rochester could get together with some of you fellas in the future.
So far there is some interest but,we still need some good bunny cover. I don't mind at all playing '' beagle boy'' but we need a good spot.
I am in Caledonia and my friend is in Silver Springs and we both have dogs. We would be interested in a hunt if someone has an area with a good population of rabbits.
Oh how I wish we still had open rabbit country here in southern NY but those never ending subdivisions seem to like smallgame coutry the best. I have always hunted rabbits with a model 12 16gauge that I got as a kid but this topic suggests what may be the ticket in these more crowded areas.
Del:"Oh how I wish we still had open rabbit country here in southern NY but those never ending subdivisions seem to like smallgame coutry the best"
I heard that brother...went up to my uncle's place in West Saugerties..1st time I'd been there in years...couldn't believe the changes to the area...all of our old small game cover was gone..we used to have a huge thicket only 200 yds from the house..prime rabbit country.thickest cover you can imagine.took many in there with dad's old Charles Harvan side by side..even more with our old singel shot marlin .22... All that is developed now and there's houses everywhere...
There is some state park land near me but a permit is needed, free and can be gotten at Letchworth state park administration building. Like nashoba said we have dogs and a lot of arrows also.
Stoneknife, I'm familiar with Letchworth off 20a, nice country, does the park have a good population of rabbits? :dunno:
Can't hunt them in the state park but can on the state land at Silver Lake with a permit.
Jim, i have hunted pheasants there a few years ago,but no rabbits. Maybe carlton Hill in town of Wyoming??
There's a lot of land to hunt an Carlton Hill, if we had enough guy's we could drive them like deer :bigsmyl:
That might be a good plan Jim, I am going to check out a spot that used to be good rabbit hunting years ago when I borrowed my friends beagle. It's located in Arcade behind our church,if we had 2 Beagles going we might have fun.
I will talk to my buddy Ric. He has a small farm near Freedom NY, good population of bunnys. He just leased 200 acres for deer across the road. It's thick over there, must be some bunnies around.
I'll call him tonight after cub scouts.
May have to take a road trip(flight) for this, I grew up there.
When does small game season close? btw
Small game closes Feb. 28 , Thanks for helping out.
Sent an email to Ric. Will give him a call tomorrow.
This could be fun if we can get it to happen within the seasons time frame.
I am going to call the DEC today and try to find out if there is some state land with good habitat and rabbit numbers
Longrifle I called the DEC in region 9 and they told me to look into the Genesee wildlife area on the east side of the river off Ottis Smith rd. Are you familiar with this area at all?
I've had luck in the past at Harwood Lake multiple use area.
I'm in Rochester, but I'm game if we get together.
Jon
Wetfeathers were is Harwood Lake area
Alex I am very familar with that area,I bowhunt there and as a bonus it's only about 8 miles from my house,i too was thinking about Harwood lake, looks like we have some good prospects, and maybe Tarponuts friend will help us as well.I really want to try and make this thing happen.
Alex Harwood lake is located in between Farmersville Station and Franklinville.

What county just out of curiosity.
I think we are looking at wyoming and allegany counties unless someone comes up with something else , me and Jim would probably up for anything.
Just name the day and the spot
O.K. guys or gals I think we have a spot to hunt. Today I spent 2 1/2 hours at Harwood Lake rec. property located in Farmersville on Rt. 98 South, and from what I saw I think we can have a go at it. Saw 1 red fox, 2 bunnies and missed one, looks like some promising land. They groom it for cover on the hillside with brush hogged lanes in between pricker bushes, multiflora rose, and buck brush/honey suckle. I was thinking meet at 8:00, hunt til lunch,I can bring some Taco soup in a crock pot, and everyone brings something to share, then regroup and decide if we want more hunting. There aren't that many Saturdays left in the season,I can only go on the 9th or 16th. We will need the dogs for sure Jim. Now all we need is a name I had a few thoughts : The WNY 2013 Rabbit Roundup,Rabbit Rodeo,Bunnie Bash,Cottontail Crush. Just a few thoughts. Let me know what you guys think, you can P.M me or call 585 610-0273 thanks Gerald
Gerald why dont we go on the the 9th and if it turns out good then we can do it on the 16th also I can bring some venison smoked trail bolonga(spelling). How much acreage is there do we have to worry adout the dogs getting out onto a road?
Does anybody have a head count on how many might so up
I'm in. Looking forward to it. ( I like Bunny Bash.)
It all sounds good to me. The 9th is a better date for me, the 16th is a maybe. How about calling it The WNY 2013 Rabbit Revival :dunno:
I can be in for the 9th as long as no blizzard is in the mix (I would have to work)
Have a great time guys, go get the bunnies
Looks like Jim, Alex, Dave , Mike and myself so far,the 9th sounds good to me,lets see if anyone else is willing and finalize details this week.
Make sure you all take some pics and have fun.

Bob Brown is going also.
Ive been hunting them around home and it looks to be a high population year. Ive seen more at my deer hunting spot than ever before in the last 20 years. Hope you fellas get into hordes of them.
This sounds too awesome. I love two things, Upstate NY and rabbit hunting! Unfortunately I'm trapped in Virginia and 16hrs round trip is just not in the cards. I wish you all the best of luck though.
With this interest in bunny hunting it might be cool to think about doing a NY TradGang deer hunt weekend or something. FWIW I would be in for anything from early season north country to LI, and from one day to a few days in the backcountry. Presuming I can get leave. Thank god I bought my lifetime license before I moved last year.
I think I can make it
Drew hope you make it. A NY Tradgang bowhunt would be a blast :campfire:
I hope both of you guys can make the hunt, should be a good, good time. Will be nice to meet everyone.
Uhhhh i would love to go but dont have ny hunting license yet! :(

I hope you can Drew, I would like the opportunity to hang out with you again.
Just a little reminder to everyone that is going with us that Jim and I ask that you please use blunts only (no broadheads )for the safety of the dogs. We are looking forward to the hunt and meeting those of you that we do not know yet.
Any fox squirrels out there? Pretty sure I won't be able to make it but Im trying to justify it.
Izzy not 100% sure I live north of Fillmore and we have them around here. I was told by the DEC about 4-5 years ago that they mostly live west of the genesee river which Fillmore is.
You guys will have a blast!
 :campfire: :archer:
F-Manny
QUICK QUESTION?! do i need my hunting license as im a total noob? and i just got my arrows dialed in. maybe i can make it? i just need license and blunts or ill just use fieldtips haha
Izzy, Not many fox squirrels here. But, If you're looking for a reason to come, would a personal invitation help?

Yes you will need a NYS small game license, field points are not a good choice for small game as they lack the "shock" of a blunt, judo or hex type small game point. Another safety reminder is to wear some flo. orange or neon green.

Far and few between right now Izzy, but I am starting to see more
Ok, we are meeting at Harwood lake on rt.98. Will the meeting spot be obvious?Maybe a dumb question, but I have to ask.
Wow fellas, Ive been in on these type hunts as have some of you and they have been some of the best times of my life. If not this year Im sure you will repeat it and Ill plan on it then.
Sorry you can't make it Izzy, we'll get together next year I'm sure. Was looking forward to meeting
ALL the NY Trad Gangers from the area.
is it possible i can get my ny small games license in time? btw i have NO idea what i need to do to get any hunting license with a bow. all i know is how to fish. please somone guide me? sorry to bother. i really want to make it out and shoot with some guys.
Good question Knawbone. There's a few different parking areas. :dunno: Maybe the area by the lake? That should be plowed if there's snow.

Sent you a PM bro, maybe I can help you out.
Izzy if ya ever want I have quite a few black squirrels on propety in Steuben County.
I look forward to seeing all you guys again and meeting the rest of you. Drew
Bob we may have to get at them black squirrels one day. Im very interested in a squirrel slam. Every time Ive seen a fox squirrel was on a deer hunting trip with a $30.00 arrow on my bow. Blacks Ive seen in the Adirondacks while gun hunting but never while I was after them.
I see a few blacks every year while hunting them in Sept. with my bow, maybe we need to put together a squirrel hunt in Sept.
Yes, lets meet in the big parking spot by the lake, coming from the north it will be on the right hand side.
Late summer squirrel, late winter rabbit, sounds good to me. Really guys, that was one of the reasons I joined Trad Gang : To be able to share and hunt with others of like mind. Doesn't get any better than that! Let's keep these group hunts going by all means. :campfire: :coffee:
Thank you Gerald for getting this started. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. :campfire:
Alex and I are going to run a couple dogs up there tomorrow just to see :bigsmyl: No Bunnies will be harmed.
Stone Knife, You two better practice a little more and get your confidence up :biglaugh:
I'm with you Knawbone,it would be fun to set aside 3 weekends a year for squirrel, deer, and rabbit hunting with the WNY T-gang crew.

were not taking weapons because we dont want to kill any before the hunt.
Don't worry we can get it done :D

The spot looks very good, we went up today but it was very cold and windy. Alex's dogs ran one rabbit but we barley scratched the surface. Hopefully it will warm up this week and pack down the snow some. Looking forward to next week.
:campfire:
Thank you so much Jim and Alex for the dog run yesterday. Alex those dogs are so obedient they come when you call. It was great to finally meet you both and I am looking forward to meeting the rest of you guy's on the 9th. Don't forget your small game license, back tag and hunter orange. You might want brush pants as well. Remember we will meet in the big parking lot on the lake side of the road, near the thick pines. See you on Sat.
Thanks Gerry I had fun and thanks for doing the leg work to get this thing going. The weather looks like it is going to be pretty good saturday.
Okay we need a time to meet and all the particulars.
O.K. lets all try to get there by 8:00 on Sat.that way we can get introduced to each other and maybe be hunting by 8:30.I will try to be there by 7:45 and will bring some bottled water, some garbage bags for our trash, and I think Taco soup, with paper bowls and spoons.I am also going bring a journal so we can sign in, I thought it might be neat to have a record of who was there and where there from. Who knows 10 years from now it might be cool too look back at hopefully the first of many get togethers.
If it snows at all I'm going to be late, I'll have to work in the morning.
We are postponing the hunt till next sat. the 16th and we will meet at 9:00 am same place. The weather is going to be too bad this sat. we will keep everyone informed. Thank you all for understanding.
God Bless.
Jim
I'm having the wife make some cookies for us. I think I'll wait until she makes them before I tell her It's postponed. Hehehehehe. I promise they won't go to waste! :biglaugh:
I can make it Sat the 16th also. I'll be there. Thanks for the update guys. Looking forward to getting together. thanks Jim
Up in case you missed it :campfire:
The weather guy played an evil trick on us !!!!!
Better safe than sorry, next week will be better anyhow. If the snow melts we wont lose as many arrows :bigsmyl:
I ended up having to work this afternoon anyway. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and giving the bunnies some mid-winter exercise. I hope everyone can still make it. :campfire:
Who is still going to make it? I know Alex and I will be there with dogs :campfire: :campfire:
I'll still make it! Very excited :)
Wouldn't miss it, really looking forward to meeting everyone and of course the hunt.I'll be bringing some cotto salami and cheese sandwiches and hot coffee.Might be good to know what everyone is bringing so we don't duplicate to much. :coffee:
I was going to bring venison trail balogna(spelling) cheese and crackers.
Looks like I might make it and I'm trying to talk swampbuck into it.

Jim it wouldnt be hunting without the sausage and crackers, when you are done plowing for the season you will have to come over and use the smoker. Hopefully you will still have some meat left if not you can have someof mine.
Nashoba,Venison balogna sounds good to me........bring it on
I'll bring some venison jerky and some homemade cookies.
I'll bring some bottled water and a snack.
Hey guys, I was wondering if there is any more room for a couple of guys from the city (NYC & Westchester). Pete A, Zag, and myself would love to join in the fun and meet all of you. we have our nys tags, and things.
Thanks
Kreesan, you guys do know that we are hunting 7-8 hours away from you right???? But, if you want you are welcome too make the trek.
Guys I will be bringing some Taco soup, some Tortilla chips,I did buy a 15 pack of bottled water also. And bowls and spoons. Looks like we will have enough treats so that we won't starve. Also you might want to throw in a camp chair to sit on.
hey gerald...i just realized that....and PeteA sent me a text. i thought it was near albany....and did not mind the drive.
i love that part of the state, and wish i were closer....you guys have fun. pardon the screw up i think i may have read some other post...on the "joan leaonard bunny hunt" ....and got them mixed up.

All I could think was maybe an Owl or hawk dropped it and it hooked in the brush? IDK it was 4' off the ground.
The four begals were great to hunt with. I love the sound of hounds on a track! thanks guys :)
It was a great day outside with new friends. I hope we can find more excuses to gather.
I thought the photos might be fun for everyone to look at. I'm sure there will be more to follow.
That looks like it was a lot of fun guys, wish I could have been there.
Jon
