I've got to say, I'm impressed by those shots made on cottontails I've been seeing. That ain't easy, While deer and such are a bit harder to get close to, they offer a much bigger target and I'm not trying to make light of those trophies. But those rabbits? Especially the head shots, that's like hitting a golf ball. You all that post those are some exeptional bow hunters. In my whole life I've only connected on maybe 3 with an arrow.
:campfire: :coffee:
I've got a few bunny pics of different sub species and different locales. Always fun. Always challenging. Always tasty.

you just need to grow bigger rabbits; problem solved. :biglaugh:
Hey Charley, I read your book I couldn't put it down. Great stories.
I hope some more pictures show up! I just started shooting recurve a couple months ago, I got burned out on a target pretty fast... My new addiction is squirrels and rabbits! I love huntin em!
Awesome pics btw!

Here's a little TX bunny. They can turn an uneventful hunt into alot of fun!
Its a passion of mine. If Im not deer hunting, squirrel hunting or fishing Im hunting rabbits. Shot this one in his head on the run. Yeah, I meant to do that. :saywhat: (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/tn-2.jpg)
Shot this one through his neck on the run. Again, I meant to do that. Bill Langer captured it on film. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IzzyNoakwithRabbit-1.jpg) :goldtooth: (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IzzyNoahRabbit.jpg)
Us NYers love us some rabbit hunting. Who couldnt? (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/DSCN1137.jpg)

I use mostly Ace Hex Heads but Ill also shoot fieldpoints if theyre in thick brush. Those Hex Heads are deadly on them. Gonna try VPAs this week. Cant wait.
Man, between these bunny pics and those Curt posted the other day I am sure fired up for some wabbit!
Just a warning to any folks hunting bunnie with trad gear for the 1st time with Hex Heads and such. Be very careful shooting into thick brush at close range bunnies. A springy branch or twig will fling an arrow back at you and a nock of an arrow could do some severe eye damage..
Izzy. Right on. I had a fence sling an arrow back. Great unique sound, but so unexpected.
So Charlie....just how close to achieving the Hare/rabbit slam are you? And how many sub-species is there anyway....anybody know?
Loved your book, BTW, Charlie!
Mark,
There are a lot more sub species than I have means to hunt them... though it's a great goal.
I've done eastern cottontail, mountain cottontail, desert cottontail, whitetail jack, blacktail jack, and snowshoe hare.
My buddies and I in Wyoming had our own "slam" but it was pretty simple though surprisingly difficult.
We had to take a snowshoe hare, jackrabbit and cottontail all in the same day. I pulled that one off a few times.
Glad you enjoyed the book buddy!
Charlie, go after the pygmy cottontail next trip west. Not much of a target (or a meal)
I know there is a brush rabbit on the west coast and it's pretty small. Where do the pygmy cottontails live?
Something small from Texas - that's a new one for me...
We have pygmy rabbits here in Idaho but they're protected.
Izzy, ya' gotta' find another hunting spot. Looks like hunters are multiplying like rabbits around there. :biglaugh:
A "bunny slam", Now there's a lofty goal. There's swamp rabbits in the Missouri bootheel, but just cottontails in my part of the state.
Trap
It's not a true slam unless you include the "giant jack" Mr Charlie. :)
Good thread and pictures. :campfire:
I love hunting snowshoes. Here's a few pics. Would like to go after Arctic hares sometime (a 10- 12lb hare) but it would be a lot of time and money to get to where they are here.

Chinook907... That's what I'm talkin about. One of my all time favorite critters to hunt. I miss it.

A snowshoe hare from the AK interior.
Pygmy bunnies are in NV too.
Our Michigan cottontails are so tough that sometimes it takes more than one arrow to stop em.

Charlie - yes they are fun. Did they cycle much where you were, or did you have similar numbers from year to year ? Numbers are dropping here after peaking a couple years ago, but still enough to make it interesting.
What winter dreams are made of...

Awesome critters. Ive only seen them while deer hunting in the Adirondack. The areas in my region of NY that are known to have populations Ive searched for miles and miles without cutting a track.
Fair number of Snowshoes in the central Adirondacks but tough to hunt in the thick Hemlock and Spruce that they like to hand around.....I see lots of tracks usually with a coyote track right with them. The population is very cyclic with highs and lows. When the number are high you'll see more bobcat, coyote and fisher sign also! Went a few weeks ago but didn't see a one.
I used to bump a few on some public land in Scoharie County. Thirty years ago lol.
Chinook... yep, pretty cyclic, but not too bad even when they were at low cycle.
Love that first pic. Classic!!
Charlie
Great pics as always...love seeing those hunting pics of years ago, I bet it was quite different than today.
Is that a compound I see in that pic? :readit: :D
Why would some one want to chase rabbits? All i need to get is a snow shoe and I'll have a California slam on rabbits.
Have taken Brush cottontails ,desert cottontails And our big blacktail jacks. Theres another brush cotton tail but its protected. Rabbits are right up there with yotes.Wonder why my Friends call me thumper?.

Love those snowshoe pics. I have never run my beagle Daisy on them, most areas here with lots of them also have lots of wolves.
Over&Under... yep, old Bear Alaskan. My best buddy. We always were a little competitive and it irked him a little that I got one more jack than he did that day.
He passed a few years ago and that bow is on the wall in my office.
T- Dunker I can't believe it took you so long to post ! Didn't know you had snowshoes in California.
Roger - thanks here's a couple more. Our wolves eat them but definitely focus more on bigger stuff. Usually have lynx or coyote tracks in the better areas here. Have only hunted with a beagle a few times but man what fun.

Love rabbit hunting Here's one I took while out antelope hunting.

I love hunting cottontails more than anything. I like to say that I know how to shoot a gun because of ground squirrels and I know how to shoot a bow because of cottontails. If I had to choose one animal to hunt for the rest of my life, it would be cottontails, without even batting an eye.

this last pick is of the first cottontail I ever took with a bow when I started shooting a bow seriously, I was playing with shooting as a lefty back then. and was a bit skinnier! that was 7 years ago :o
speaking of pygmies, we have got some here in my neck of the woods, and they are not protected, but they are pretty rare to come across, I know of a place where one can find them fairly regularly.
