Title: Campfires.....Nature's sedative........
Post by: monkeyball on January 16, 2013, 03:18:00 PM
What is it about campfires, the smell, the crackling and popping, and that soul searching stare into a red flame. It does it for me every time, like a sedative I can feel myself calm right down. No matter what I have going on.

Good friends, good hunts, and good campfires. Follow the smoke and come on in and tell us your tale......

These next few are at a buddies cabin up in Sullivan Co. Penna. After a non-stop day of shooting we always would head up for a get together around the campfire. This is my buddy Howard and Chris....

I enjoy campfires so much I can't explain it. I can't do hunting camps anymore, but I really believe campfires for either fishing or hunting are so important that I put a small campfire ring in my back yard. I can still fish and camp, so the gathering around the campfire still lives in my reality. Nothing is more important than the stories, fables and just plain communitication between friends around the "Campfire" that they are the central reason for gatherings. If I can go to hunting camps, the fire pit will be the central gathering point. Same thing goes for fishing camps. Even if you just go camping for camping's sake, the campfire is the reason for the event. God Bless the campfire. May it live forever.

Campfires are the gift you give yourself for a day well spent. I know a hunting trip is still fun without the fire at the end but it just seems more enjoyable with it. Like the perfect end to the day.
Several years ago on a backpacking trip into the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma several good friend and I were standing around camp talking over the communal campfire. The fire had died down to a perfect bed of coals. We were discussing past glories backpacking and hunting as we all hunt together also. Max Johnson a 7o something friend who normally walked us into the ground, strolled up and as he was looking into the last embers of a dying fire, remarked "Now that's a fire a man could Lye over all night long" and with that he turned and went to bed.
We had a good laugh over that, but that is always one of my favorite memories. No picture to share and I wish I did as Max is gone now. But he's with us on every campfire I have.

There is a very good reason that fire building skills are an important part of survival classes.

Things never seem bad when a fire is burning.

It doesn't matter to me whether it is in my old Fisher woodstove in the cellar or in the fire ring out back, there is just something about a campfire. Thanks to all for adding in.

 Frank(aka fmscan),
Howard was a one of a kind guy. He was the whole reason us Pa guys got to know you NY guys and I am really glad we did.

I hope to shoot some arrows with him again someday. Take care buddy.

                      Good Shooting,
                                 Craig

One of my best times elk hunting. My girlfriend was visiting me in Colorado for 2 weeks and camped with me at 11,500 feet. We had mule deer stroll through camp twice and had fun watching whiskey jacks steal the dog food.

Back at my Michigan deer camp, man I sure missed home...

I run a wood fired pizza restaurant and it makes it so hard to not be mesmerized by the fire. I never get sick of watching the flames and find myself day dreaming of being on the mountain chasing elk and deer way too often. A good fire can always solve the world's problems IMO.

Camp fires are big medicine.Besides the benefits that are visible like cooking and keeping warm and so on, they also offer supernatural gifts. Things you can't see or explain. Some things just are. Watch others stare into the fire while someone is telling a story. They have a sort of deeper attention. Moods are better. How does the camp fire make you feel? I think a camp (hunting or fishing or hiking) without a campfire is lacking.
