Title: Total weight of your whitetail arrow?
Post by: threeunder on January 15, 2013, 06:24:00 PM
Just wondering what the total weight of your whitetail arrow is.
Would also be interested in hearing your effective draw weight and the broadhead you use if you'd like.

I have too many bows and set-ups but my two go to bows would be
50@27 palmer classic, 150 heritage with 100grain insert and 125grain point I think totaling with fletch and wrap around 570 grains.

2nd is a Darton Pittsley preditor, 50@28 w/8S-SPD string, heritage 250, 100grain insert and 200grain points and totals 640grains..

broadheads can be anything I have em all, with these arrows if the hit is right pretty much any sharp broadhead works and goes right thru,, But make note I shoot the heaviest arrows I can for quietness and stability..

Had to go back and check on your title, looks like some guys are ready to shoot white whale not white tail... ;)

Last year I ran 575gr. Gt 5575 out of a 51@28 bow for about 165 fps.  Shot through everything.  Looks like this year will be about 600 as I want to try wood and they are all coming in around 600-640.  I also got a bunch of 2020s cheap that weigh about the same.

Over the past three years I've hunted with arrows that weighed 424-505 grains with identical pass-through results. My broadhead has been a 125 2-blade single beverl every time.

My draw weights for hunting have ranged 46-48 pounds. A different hunting bow each year (for the fun of it).

Out of my 58# Centaur, I'm shooting 2216's tipped with 160 grain snuffers with 100 grain steel inserts.  Somewhere around 650 grains with all the bells and whistles.  Prior to the snuffers it was 4 blades eskimos with 125 gr steel insert.

I shoot the same set-up out of my 56# Assenheimer.

Any good, solid, COC BH of 2, 3 & 4 blades for deer will be lethal...so redundant.

565gr. for 5 bows running 55#, 56# and 61#. I have Carbon Express Heritage 250's I use for practice and 3-d, I use beautiful woody's for my hunting. They weigh the same and fly well from each bow. They run between a little less than 9gpp to to just over 10gpp depending on the bow. I have some Heritage 350's running about 730gr. for heavier work that are awesome. No woodies in that weight yet, working on it soon though.

475 grains total from either my Kanati or my RER XR. That's just over 10 grains per pound of draw at my 28" draw. My usual broadhead is a Zwickey Delta, but I've got some Simmons Tigersharks of the same weight that I'm going to give a go. These arrows travel at 175 to 185 fps from those bows respectively.

They make whitetails dead, which is really all I ask of them, LOL! Oh, and it doesn't take them long to get that way either.

I've tried heavier than 10 gpp, but really can't say that it made a difference. I have no desire to go lighter. My setup tunes to perfection, which is what I'm after.

I have never harvested a whitetail with a trad bow, but my setup is a 48# @ 31" longbow, shooting about 710-grain arrows.  I shoot full-length 2117 aluminums, with 125-grain glue-on Wensel Woodsmans and a 75-grain adaptor.  They fly like darts, and I suspect they will do the job if I can get them there.

Last year...
45#@28" 62" whip HS 450 grain total with VPA 175 3 blade.
Shot a decent size doe at 17yds. Penetrated to about 3" in front of feathers. Arrow entered high and back...just getting some liver. Caught a couple/few ribs in and out. Broke one, sliced/nicked 2.

This year..
Same bow, same draw, shooting a 300 grain VPA 3 blade on same shaft. Comes out to 575 grains total.

Have authenticated notable success from a 51@28 bow utilizing the following arrow design:

Victory VForce HV 350
100 grain insert
300 gn Big Jim 'Big 3"
Total Wt - ~610 gns

Fervently conceive that this particular set-up exceeds far beyond what may be considered lethal for whitetails.

Usually around 525. shooting 47-50 lb bows. My last few critters have been killed with 475 out of the same bows. The 475 seems to shoot better. Seems I may have been bogging my bows down a bit. I dropped from 55-58 lbs and kept the same arrow weight fearing lack of penetration which has turned out not to be a problem. I put more focus on hitting them in the ribs than how much my arrow weighs these days.RC

RC mentioned "bogging" down your bow...Personally I think he is right....

My long time "go to" bow hits 73 lbs at my 29 1/2" draw, I keep my arrow weight under 800 grains, because any more it seems to "bog" it down.

No white tails here but my arrows are about 480gn For 55-60lb Bows. All my bows are hunting bows and all my arrows are hunting arrows when not hitting targets.

I don't have a whitetail arrow per se but build an arrow geared toward the heaviest animal that I might encounter and that is elk.I sometimes sit over springs and anything could show up at any time-deer,bear,lion or elk.I also like to keep one weight and get used to that trajectory,so most of my arrows are 650-700 grs out of 53-55# bows.My favorite weight is about 13 GPP.

This years set up is a bit heavier. 580 grains out of 52 pound longbow. I feel this will also be a deadly combo for Ohio bucks.
